Neuroblastoma stage 4S: Tumor regression rate and risk factors of progressive disease.

BACKGROUND: The clinical course of neuroblastoma stage 4S or MS is characterized by a high rate of spontaneous tumor regression and favorable outcome. However, the clinical course and rate of the regression are poorly understood. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed, including all patients with stage 4S neuroblastoma without MYCN amplification, from two Dutch centers between 1972 and 2012. We investigated the clinical characteristics, the biochemical activity reflected in urinary catecholamine excretion, and radiological imaging to describe the kinetics of tumor regression, the

Pelvic Insufficiency Fractures After External Beam Radiation Therapy for Gynecologic Cancers: A Meta-analysis and Meta-regression of 3929 Patients.

PURPOSE: To estimate the overall rate, symptomatic proportion, and most common sites of pelvic insufficiency fracture (PIF) after external beam radiation therapy for gynecologic cancers based on posttreatment computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, or bone scintigraphy. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A systematic search of databases (PubMed and EMBASE) was performed (CRD42019125679). The pooled summary of overall PIF and the proportion of symptomatic cases were calculated using the random-effects model weighted by the inverse variance. A multivariate meta-regres

[Diffuse large cell lymphoma with spontaneous regression in the lung and lymph nodes. Case report].

An 84-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of swelling of the cervical lymph nodes and multiple tumorous lesions observed on radiographic studies. Transcutaneous lung biopsy was performed, but necrosis of the tissue was too marked to make a diagnosis. The diagnosis of diffuse large-cell lymphoma was made based on a biopsy of the pretracheal lymph node. During the first two months after admission, the left cervical lymph nodes and most of the pulmonary lesions regressed not withstanding of special treatment for lymphoma. The patient eventually died of generalized peritonitis. At

Eccrine Angiomatous Hamartoma with Atypical Localization Treated by Mohs Micrographic Surgery.

Eccrine angiomatous hamartoma (EAH) is a rare hamartoma characterized by a benign proliferation of eccrine glands and vascular structures in the dermis. These tumors rarely regress spontaneously, so surgical excision of the involved tissue is required when pain or enlargement occurs. Here, the authors report the clinical case of a patient affected by an extremely painful EAH with the atypical localization at the last phalanx of the thumb of the right hand with involvement of nail matrix and nail bed. This report aims to emphasize the application of Mohs micrographic surgery for the treatment o

A case of methotrexate-associated Epstein-Barr virus-positive mucocutaneous ulcer.

Epstein-Barr virus-positive mucocutaneous ulcer (EBVMCU) is a B-cell proliferative disorder that has been designated as a provisional entity in the 2017 World Health Organization classification for lymphoid neoplasms. While EBVMCU may contain varying numbers of cells with Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg cells-like morphology, the clinical course is benign and must be distinguished from lymphomas. Patients who develop EBVMCU are commonly immunocompromised, with methotrexate (MTX) as the leading cause. Most previously reported cases of EBVMCU describe mucosal ulcers with very little documentation on

Cardiac self-limiting rhabdomyomas in a neonatal patient with tuberous sclerosis complex: a case report with negative genetic testing.

BACKGROUND: Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) is a hereditary condition that leads to the development of non-malignant neoplasms in various organs, including cardiac rhabdomyomas, which can cause significant complications. CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes the case of a 15-day-old male neonate who was hospitalized due to intracardiac masses and brain lesions, despite the absence of TSC gene mutations. The patient's mother exhibited facial angiofibromas, a common feature of TSC. Over a 2-year follow-up period, spontaneous regression of the cardiac tumor was observed. CONCLUSIONS: This c

Adult-onset kaposiform hemangioendothelioma with neurofibromatosis type 1: A case report and literature review.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a very rare, locally aggressive vascular neoplasm. It occurs mostly in children and is rarely observed in adults. It typically originates on the skin, later affecting the deep soft tissue of the extremities, head or neck, and retroperitoneum by infiltrative growth. It is locally aggressive, does not regress spontaneously, and tends to metastasize locally as well as to the regional lymph nodes. In this article, we report a case of adult-onset KHE with neurofibromatosis type 1. The patient presented to our department with a 2-month history of a painful ul

Spontaneous regression of hepatocellular carcinoma after alcohol and smoking abstinence and bone fracture surgery: A case report.

RATIONALE: The spontaneous hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) regression is rare. The underlying mechanism remains unclear. Elucidating this mechanism may lead to a novel HCC treatment, especially in the era of immunotherapy, because immunological reactions are among the possible mechanisms of spontaneous HCC regression. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 63-year-old man fell and fractured his right olecranon. Before surgery for bone fracture, an abnormal liver function test result was noted and HCC was also suspected by ultrasonography and tumor markers. The patient was a heavy drinker and a daily smoker and w

A case of peripheral T-cell lymphoma unspecified involving subcutaneous tissue.

A 36-year-old man presented with a 3-year-old red-brown plaque with subcutaneous nodules on his left thigh. Although a similar lesion was observed on his right thigh 3 years earlier, it spontaneously disappeared 1 year later. However, the lesion on the left thigh was growing larger. Histologically, the lesion showed a diffuse and dense infiltration of atypical lymphocytes extending from the superficial dermis to the subcutaneous tissue. Severe lobular panniculitis, composed of small- and medium-sized atypical lymphocytes and large normal histiocytes, was observed in the subcutaneous adipose ti

[Report of a case: non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the hypopharynx in a patient with HIV infection. Remission without lymphoma-specific treatment].

Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) are common in HIV patients, although it is rare for primary lymphomas to develop in the larynx or hypopharynx. We present the case of a patient that was diagnosed of a high degree NHL, following a biopsy of the piriform sinus' lesion, taker by direct laryngoscopy. Simultaneously he was diagnosed as HIV. The interest of this paper is the total remission of the lymphoma seen after specific HIV treatment only.

Neuroblastoma in situ.

Two cases of neuroblastoma in situ incidentally found in young infants at autopsy are reported. One was an 8-day-old female infant of large for dates clinically diagnosed as fetal erythroblastosis. Histologically, several foci of tumor were scattered within the medulla of the left adrenal gland. This case was thought to be multiple neuroblastoma in situ. The other was a 34-day-old male infant who was born premature and associated with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Grossly, a solitary small nodule was seen in the right adrenal gland. Microscopically, the lesion was located within the medulla.

Spontaneous remission of acute adult T-cell leukaemia with chromosomal abnormality infiltrating to skin and liver.

Acute type of adult T-cell leukaemia (ATL) has been recognized as highly-progressive T-cell malignancy with a median survival of 7 months. We present a case who had a spontaneous remission from acute type ATL with organ involvement and chromosomal abnormality implying very poor prognosis. Although the mechanism of spontaneous remission remains uncertain, our case was unique with regard to the progression and regression of leukaemia.

Increased numbers of argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions between primary and metastatic sites predict tumor progression in stage IV and IV-S neuroblastoma.

BACKGROUND: A silver colloid technique to determine nucleolar organizer region (AgNOR) number was used to study the proliferative activity of Stage IV-S neuroblastoma in which a spontaneous tumor regression is often observed. METHODS: Primary regional lymph nodes and hepatic lesions from five children with Stage IV-S and five with Stage IV neuroblastoma were examined. RESULTS: Average AgNOR counts per tumor cell nucleus from all five children with Stage IV neuroblastoma were lowest in the primary lesions, intermediate in the metastatic regional lymph nodes, and highest in the distant metasta

[Spontaneous regression of pulmonary metastases from hypernephroma: report of a case and review of literature (author's transl)].

Until now there are reported some 60 cases of spontaneous regression of pulmonary metastases from hypernephroma. An own case is shown up: There was taken nephrectomy and following local radiation of hypernephroma in a 59 years old male patient in spite of pulmonary metastases. 8 months after operation these metastases had disappeared. There was no indication for any metastases in radiologic and scintigrafic examination even 4 years following up neither in lungs nor in other organ. The causality of hormones and autoantibodies - perphaps additionally stimulated by wound infection-in the phenomen

Tp53/p53 status in keratoacanthomas.

BACKGROUND: Keratoacanthoma (KA) is a common keratinocytic skin neoplasm that typically develops rapidly and undergoes complete spontaneous regression. As the pro-apoptotic p53 protein may be involved in the lifecycle of KA, we studied the p53 status throughout the main stages of KA that include proliferation, maturation and regression in a large series of lesions. METHODS: One-hundred and twenty-four KAs were characterized with respect to age of the lesions both clinically and histopathologically, in addition to phenotypic characteristics such as cellular atypia, infiltration, inflammation a

Identification of candidate B-lymphoma genes by cross-species gene expression profiling.

Comparative genome-wide expression profiling of malignant tumor counterparts across the human-mouse species barrier has a successful track record as a gene discovery tool in liver, breast, lung, prostate and other cancers, but has been largely neglected in studies on neoplasms of mature B-lymphocytes such as diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and Burkitt lymphoma (BL). We used global gene expression profiles of DLBCL-like tumors that arose spontaneously in Myc-transgenic C57BL/6 mice as a phylogenetically conserved filter for analyzing the human DLBCL transcriptome. The human and mouse lymp
