Solitary Myofibroma of the Nasal Septum: A Rare Clinical Entity.

Myofibromas are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that primarily affect infants and young children, most commonly arising in the skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle, or bone. These tumors present with a broad clinical spectrum, ranging from self-limiting lesions to disseminated and fatal cases. In adults, the solitary form is encountered more frequently than the multicentric type. Although myofibromas may occur in the oral region of the head and neck, isolated cases involving the nasal septum are exceedingly rare. Here, we describe a case of solitary adult-onset myofibroma of the nasal septum that was

Xanthoma of the temporal bone and skull base.

Xanthomata are soft tissue tumors composed of lipid-laden "foamy" histiocytes associated with cholesterol clefts and inflammation. They are considered to be specialized granuloma rather than true neoplasms and are usually associated with disorders of lipid metabolism, most commonly one of the hyperlipoproteinemia syndrome. A rare case of a xanthoma involving the temporal bone and causing extensive destruction of the skull base is presented. Otalgia and infection are the most common presenting symptoms of this disorder, with multiple cranial nerve palsies resulting in some cases. Treatment incl

Primary Ewing Sarcoma of the Cervical Spine: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Ewing sarcoma is a rare neoplasm that mostly grows in bones or soft tissues around bones. Most cases of Ewing sarcoma occur in intra-skeletal locations (long bones, pelvis, or ribs) and rarely in extra-skeletal regions such as paravertebral or epidural space, whereas a primary intradural extramedullary Ewing sarcoma (IEES) is extremely rare. Fifty cases of primary IEES including our case were identified in the literature, so far, of which two-thirds are in the lumbosacral region, while only 12 reports described a cervical location of the tumor. Herein, we are presenting a case of C7-T1 primary

Palm needle induced pseudo-tumours of bone.

Two children presented with recurrent swelling and pain, one in the forearm the other in the leg, without a history of a penetrating injury. It was difficult to arrive at a precise clinical diagnosis. X-ray films showed periosteal thickening in the diaphysis of the adjacent long bone with some unusual features but were suggestive of infection or tumour. Other extensive investigations did not contribute to a diagnosis. This was only achieved after surgical exploration. Both children had a 3 cm length of brittle palm needle within a soft tissue cavity adjacent to the long bone. The needles were

[One case report of primary sphenoid sinus tuberculosis].

We report a case of primary sinonasal tuberculosis in a 23-year old man. He had a half-year history of headache and eye pain on the left side, and found the neoplasm of nasopharynx 15 days ago. Previously denied history of tuberculosis and contact history. After be admitted to hospital, twice biopsy from neoplasm of na- sopharynx were both of chronic inflammation. Coronal CT scan of the lesion when admission found the left parasellar region and the left sphenoid sinus soft tissue density increased, about 20 mm X 32 mm X 34 mm, left inferior wall between sella bone defects, and bone sclerosis,

Application of the WHO Reporting System for Soft Tissue Cytopathology in Bone and Soft Tissue FNAs: Diagnostic Accuracy and Risk of Malignancy Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Recently, a standardized reporting system for soft tissue cytopathology was introduced. The aim is to evaluate the diagnostic utility of FNA in the diagnosis of bone and soft tissue lesions by comparing the cytological and histopathological diagnoses in a large group of cases and to determine the risk of malignancy (ROM) rates according to the World Health Organization (WHO) Reporting System for Soft Tissue Cytopathology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The pathology databases were searched for cases that underwent FNA for bone and soft tissue lesions between 2020 and 2023. Only cases th

Intestinal LMNA::NTRK1-fused spindle cell neoplasm with S100 and CD34 coexpression: a new case.

Recurrent fusions involving neurotrophin tyrosine receptor kinase (NTRK) genes have been increasingly recognised in spindle cell tumours of somatic soft tissues due to the widespread use of RNA-based sequencing techniques. This heterogeneous group of neoplasms is included as an emerging entity in the current WHO Classification of Soft Tissue and Bone Tumors A subset of these tumours, associated with NTRK1 fusions, displays a distinctive phenotype in the form of monomorphic cytomorphology, patternless arrangement, perivascular and stromal hyalinisation, and CD34+/S100+/SOX10- immunoprofile. Dental health examination and the pediatrician: an orientation to dental health according to developmental age groups.

There are a variety of oral/dental findings presented in the oral cavities of children that are of interest to the examining pediatrician. There are oral pathologic conditions and soft tissues anomalies. These include developmental anomalies and variations of the soft tissue, benign mucosal lesions, benign mesenchymal lesions, cysts and pseudocysts, odontogenic cysts and neoplasms of the jaws, benign nonodontogenic neoplasms of the jaws, and inflammatory lesions in bone. There are anomalies in the developing dentitions of children that a pediatrician needs to be aware of also. These include an

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) of the bone and soft tissue: a Japanese Musculoskeletal Oncology Group (JMOG) multi-institutional study.

PURPOSE: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) of the bone and soft tissues are rare mesenchymal neoplasms, some of which are malignant. However, their clinical and pathological characteristics remain unclear. This study was performed to investigate the clinical and pathological characteristics of PEComas in bone and soft tissues by leveraging information from the Japanese Musculoskeletal Oncology Group. METHODS: Nine patients, including four male and five female patients with a median age of 50 years, were retrospectively reviewed. PEComas of the visceral organs, including the uteru

Nonepithelial Tumors of the Larynx: Single-Institution 13-Year Review with Radiologic-Pathologic Correlation.

Nonepithelial tumors of the larynx are rare and represent a minority of all laryngeal neoplasms. Imaging has an important role in the diagnosis, treatment planning, and surveillance of these entities. However, unfamiliarity with these neoplasms can cause diagnostic difficulties for radiologists, especially because many of the imaging findings are nonspecific. By using a systematic approach based on clinical history, patient age and gender, lesion location, endoscopic results, and specific imaging findings, the differential diagnosis can often be narrowed. These tumors typically affect the subm

Vertebral hemangiosarcoma as a cause of spinal cord compression in a dog.

Primary central nervous system (CNS) neoplasia is relatively rare in most domestic animal species, except dogs and cats, being directly associated with aging. On the other hand, hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, mammary carcinoma and melanoma are the most common secondary tumors affecting CNS. They usually represent metastasis, and less frequently arising from nearby areas that infiltrate or compress CNS normal tissue, resulting in neurological clinical signs. This case report documents a 10-year-old female spayed Pinscher presenting with severe thoracolumbar pain and paraplegia due to a primary vert

Neoplastic Elbow Diseases and Mimickers.

Tumors around the elbow are infrequent, and delayed diagnosis is a common theme because of the low incidence and lack of familiarity. However, just like any other site, the radiologic work-up of musculoskeletal tumors around the elbow remains the same, with plain films the first investigation in a patient with a suspected bone tumor and ultrasound the first modality to evaluate a soft tissue lump. The management of both bone and soft tissue tumors around the elbow is unique because of a large number of important structures in an anatomically confined space and little normal tissue to spare wit

Diagnostic Utility of USP6 RNA Chromogenic In Situ Hybridization in the Differential Diagnosis of Nodular Fasciitis and Aneurysmal Bone Cyst.

Recurrent USP6 gene rearrangements underlie a subset of mesenchymal neoplasms, including nodular fasciitis and aneurysmal bone cyst. These rearrangements place USP6 under the regulatory control of another gene's constitutively active promoter, resulting in USP6 overexpression. Recently, it has been demonstrated in a limited number of cases that detection of USP6 overexpression by RNA chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH) can serve as a surrogate marker for USP6-rearranged tumors. To further assess the diagnostic utility of USP6 RNA CISH, we evaluated its application in 1210 bone and soft ti

Giant cell tumor of soft tissue involving thyroid gland: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Giant cell tumor of soft tissue is a low malignant uncommon neoplasm, with histologic features and immunophenotype similar to its bone counterpart. Primary giant cell tumor of soft tissue in the thyroid gland is considered an exceedingly rare entity. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of primary thyroid giant cell tumor of soft tissue in a 69-year-old Chinese female patient. Neck ultrasonography showed a 19 mm × 12 mm × 5 mm nodule with heterogeneous echo and clear boundary located within the left thyroid. Histopathological examination revealed that the neoplasm was composed of

Pyogenic granuloma associated with bone loss in an eight year old child: A case report.

Soft tissue enlargements of the oral cavity often present a diagnostic challenge because a diverse group of pathologic processes can produce such lesions. An enlargement may represent a variation of normal anatomic structures, inflammation, cysts, developmental anomalies and neoplasm. Within these lesions is a group of reactive hyperplasias, which develop in response to a chronic, recurring tissue injury that stimulates an exuberant or excessive tissue repair response. The pyogenic granuloma is a reactive enlargement that is an inflammatory response to local irritation such as calculus, a frac

Myeloid sarcoma of the urinary bladder and epididymis as a primary manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia with inv(16).

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) of the lower urinary tract is rare. We describe a 47-year-old man with hematuria, who was subsequently found to have MS involving bladder and epididymis. The neoplasm was composed predominantly of blasts that expressed CD68, CD117, myeloperoxidase, and lysozyme, with occasional immature eosinophils. Although blood and bone marrow examinations showed no morphologic evidence of leukemia, conventional cytogenetic studies of marrow demonstrated inv(16)(p13q22) in 4 of 20 metaphases; fluorescence in situ hybridization of the bladder neoplasm also showed inv(16). Following chemo

Differential diagnosis of T2 hypointense masses in musculoskeletal MRI.

Many soft tissue masses have an indeterminate appearance on MRI, often displaying varying degrees and extent of T2 hyperintensity. However, a subset of neoplasms and tumor-like lesions may exhibit prominent areas of T2 hypointensity relative to skeletal muscle. The hypointensity observed on T2-weighted MRI can be caused by a variety of substances, including evolving blood products, calcifications or other inorganic crystals, or fibrous tissue. Carefully evaluating the presence and pattern of T2 hypointensity in soft tissue masses and considering potential causes in their associated clinical co

Primary malignant mesenchymoma of bone.

Primary malignant mesenchymoma of bone is a rare neoplasm consisting of two or more unrelated tissue elements other than a fibrosarcomatous component. To our knowledge, only six cases have been reported in the literature. A case of malignant mesenchymoma composed of rhabdomyosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and osteosarcoma arising within the right acetabulum, resulting in the patient's death 4 months after presentation, is reported, and the literature is reviewed, with a discussion of the similarities to dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma.

[A coexistence of the Dupuytren's disease and malignant neoplasms: a review].

Dupuytren's disease is classified as a benign superficial fibromatosis, in which excessive proliferation of myofibroblats and formation of nodules and chords occurs, followed by development of finger contractures. The similarities between Dupuytren's disease and neoplasms were shown at molecular and clinical grounds. The objective of the study was to review of the literature investigating possible relationship between occurrence of Dupuytren's disease and malignancies. Review of the few available papers shows (1) statistically significantly increased malignant neoplasm mortality among men with

Primary extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma of bone: Report of three cases and review of the literature.

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is a rare neoplasm of soft tissue. The usual location is in deep parts of the proximal extremities and limb girdles in middle-aged adults. The bone location as primary location is extremely rare and few cases are reported. We present three cases arising in bone with molecular confirmation using both RT-PCR and FISH analysis. Patients include two men and one woman with an age of 62, 69 and 73 years old. The mean size of the lesion was 13cm (range 8-18cm). Tumors arose in the iliac bone in two cases and in the proximal humerus in the other case. At time of dia
