BACKGROUND: Metatypical cell carcinoma (MTC) is a quite rare malignancy accounting for 5% of all non melanoma skin cancers, with features of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. It can be described as coexistence of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma with no transition zone between them.
AIM: Our review identified a correlation between gender and MTC affected region.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 312 consecutive patients, diagnosed for MTC localized on face and scalp. Statistical analysis was made to determinate most affected areas, g

Abnormal nodules were found in the left lung of a 52-year-old woman in segments 6 and 10 on a chest CT. These nodules showed no changes for 18 months, and we discontinued follow-up. Almost 5 years later, an abnormal shadow was found in her left lower lung field on a medical check-up chest X-ray. Chest CT revealed that the left segments 6 and 10 nodules had grown. We diagnosed these lesions as synchronous double primary lung cancers in the same lobe based on the disease history and performed a left lower lobectomy and lymph node dissection. Pathological examination of both tumors revealed adeno

Fourteen feline nodal lymphomas previously diagnosed as Hodgkin-like lymphoma (HLL) were studied through histologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular analyses to further characterize feline HLL. The cohort comprised 12 domestic shorthair and 2 Maine coon cats, with a male/female ratio of 1.3 and a median age of 9.5 years. Reed-Sternberg and Hodgkin cells were observed in 14/14 HLLs, while a minority of cells resembling lymphocyte-predominant cells were observed in 5/14 (36%) cases. Neoplastic cells were embedded in a mixed reactive background mainly composed of T and B lymphocytes and histio

Pediatric ovarian neoplasms (PONs) are rare and diagnostically challenging due to nonspecific symptoms and diverse presentation. While most are benign, prompt recognition of malignant cases is crucial for effective management. This study aimed to comprehensively analyze the spectrum of PONs diagnosed at a tertiary care center. A retrospective review was conducted over 12 years(2013- 2024). All PONs diagnosed in Pathology department with available slides/blocks were included. Inflammatory masses and gonads from disorders of sexual development were excluded. Of 83 ovarian lesions, 77 neoplasms w

Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) is a benign fibro-osseous condition typically presenting as multifocal, sclerotic masses throughout the jaws. While often asymptomatic, the hypovascular nature of the dysplastic bone predisposes it to secondary infection, which can mimic more aggressive pathologies. We present a complex diagnostic challenge involving a 76-year-old female with a history of intravenous ibandronic acid therapy for 18 months. The patient presented with a purulent mandibular fistula and exposed bone, leading to an initial clinical suspicion of Stage 2 Medication-Related Osteo

Mixed squamous cell and glandular papilloma (mixed papilloma) of the lung is exceedingly rare, with only 18 cases reported in the literature. Herein, we report a case of mixed papilloma and its associated immunohistochemical and positron emission tomographic (PET) findings. A 60-year-old Japanese male with a smoking history of 40 pack-years presented with a smooth-edged pulmonary lesion in the right S5 segment on computed tomography (CT). F18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET revealed abnormally increased FDG uptake in the mass (maximum standardized uptake value, 3.4). We performed right middle lob

Mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasms (MiNENs) of the rectum are rare tumors that typically demonstrate aggressive behavior, largely driven by high-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma components. Evidence guiding management is limited, particularly for early-stage lesions and for patients unable to tolerate standard oncologic surgery. We report the case of an elderly man with extensive comorbidities who was found to have a 1.3 cm rectal MiNEN following transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEMS) performed for rectal bleeding. Histopathology revealed a moderately differentiated adenocarcino

We report a very unusual case of a composite high-grade glioma and rhabdoid tumor in an adult. A 22-year-old woman presented with scintillating scotoma due to a solid tumor with surrounding brain edema in the right occipital lobe. The tumor was grossly resected. Histological examinations showed that the tumor was mainly composed of INI1-positive high-grade glioma tissue containing an INI1-negative rhabdoid component. She received radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Three months after the surgery, she again complained of visual disturbances, and tumor recurrence within the resection cavity was

The fifth edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification and the International Consensus Classification (ICC) both include a category "myeloid/lymphoid neoplasms (MLN) with eosinophilia (eo) and tyrosine kinase (TK) gene fusions" (WHO, MLN-TK; ICC, M/LN-eo-TK). This rare group comprises phenotypically and prognostically heterogeneous disorders, which present a significant diagnostic challenge. The rapid and reliable identification of patients with MLN-TK may be delayed due to genetic complexity and significant phenotypic differences, including the chronic phase and primary/secon

BACKGROUND: Odontomas are the most common odontogenic tumours, often considered hamartomas rather than true neoplasms. These mixed tumours consist of fully differentiated dental tissues, including enamel, dentin, cementum, and pulp. Odontomas can be classified into compound and complex types. While typically asymptomatic, they are often discovered during routine radiographic examinations for delayed tooth eruption. The management of odontomas generally involves surgical removal, which is effective in resolving associated dental impactions.

SMARCA4 gene encodes BRG1 , a member of the SWItch/sucrose non-fermentable protein family involved in epigenetic transcriptional regulation of important cellular processes. In the uterine corpus, SMARCA4 / BRG1 deficiency is associated with a novel class of undifferentiated uterine sarcomas, characterized by younger age onset, rhabdoid histology, focal phyllodiform architecture, high-risk pathologic findings, and dismal prognosis. Herein, we report a case of a 34-year-old Asian woman with a SMARCA4 / BRG1 -deficient uterine tumor fulfilling the clinicopathologic features of an undifferentiated

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines recommend routine lymph node dissection (LND) for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) to achieve adequate staging; however, real-world compliance remains suboptimal. This study evaluated whether, compared with routine approaches, selective lymphadenectomy, on the basis of clinical judgment, compromises oncological outcomes in patients with iCCA.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 179 patients who underwent curative hepatectomy for iCCA between 2014 and 2024 was performed. The cohort included pure cholangiocarcinoma (CCA, n = 102) and combined hepatocellular

Verrucous carcinoma (VC) is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with an extremely well-differentiated microscopic appearance. It is able to show extensive local invasion, but practically never metastasizes. VCs mostly occur in the oral cavity, larynx, nasal cavity, esophagus, vulva, vagina, anorectal region, penis and skin. VCs sometimes coexist with conventional SCCs, and in these instances they are associated with a higher recurrence rate than pure VCs. The occurrence of VC in the renal pelvis is very rare and to date only 4 cases have been reported. We report here a case of VC w

Individuals harboring germ-line DICER1 mutations are predisposed to a rare cancer syndrome, the DICER1 Syndrome or pleuropulmonary blastoma-familial tumor and dysplasia syndrome [online Mendelian inheritance in man (OMIM) #601200]. In addition, specific somatic mutations in the DICER1 RNase III catalytic domain have been identified in several DICER1-associated tumor types. Pituitary blastoma (PitB) was identified as a distinct entity in 2008, and is a very rare, potentially lethal early childhood tumor of the pituitary gland. Since the discovery by our team of an inherited mutation in DICER1 i

BACKGROUND: The most common malignant renal tumors of childhood are Wilms tumor (WT), clear cell sarcoma of the kidney (CCSK), cellular mesoblastic nephroma (CMN), and rhabdoid tumor of the kidney (RTK). Because these tumors present significant diagnostic difficulties, the goal was to define diagnostically useful signatures based on gene expression.
PROCEDURES: Gene expression analysis using oligonucleotide arrays was performed on a training set of 47 tumors (10 CCSKs, 9 CMNs, 8 RTKs, and 20 WTs). Classifiers were developed for each tumor type using variations of compound covariate class pred

Background Fertility is a highly complex subject; it involves more than one individual and has profound psychological and economic implications. Moreover, it is affected by several factors, including age, significant systemic illness in either partner, exposure to environmental toxins, medications, or radiation. In patients with malignancy, fertility is more complicated. Patients with a malignancy might have reduced fertility due to the disease, medication, and radiation. Besides the reduced fertility, there are more concerns regarding the subsequent effect of cancer treatment on their offspri

BACKGROUND: Discordant lymphoma is defined by the simultaneous presence of two or more distinct types of lymphomas at different anatomic sites. With fewer than 20 studies reporting cases of discordant lymphoma to date, the incidence of this condition is believed to be very low.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report a case of discordant lymphoma in a 34-year-old female patient that involved mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma and nodular sclerosis Hodgkin lymphoma in the right supraclavicular lymph nodes. The patient presented with a mass in the mediastinum and enlargement of the right supraclavicu

Primary liver sarcomatous carcinomas (PLSCs) are very aggressive tumors. They are characterized by a fast clinical course, and therefore need a prompt histological diagnosis. Here, we report two cases of PLSC. One arises in a non-cirrhotic liver and the other in cirrhosis, with differences in onset and histological features. Special emphasis is put on the expression of albumin and HCC markers, and their possible usefulness in the diagnosis. The English literature of the last 20 years was revised (92 cases). Immunohistochemistry was performed manually or automatically; in situ hybridization (IS

Gastrointestinal cancer is a global health problem. In the new 6th edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Tumours (WCT) of the Digestive System, updated evidence and guidance is provided for the aetiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, classification, grading, staging and prognosis of these tumours. However, significant knowledge gaps remain, some of which are addressed in this review. To provide for a research framework to fill these knowledge gaps, we focused on precursor lesions and rare cancers, where the need for new evidence is most urgent. Areas with a need for further re
