Localized (solitary) fibrous tumors of the pleura: an analysis of 15 patients.

BACKGROUND: Localized fibrous tumors of the pleura (LFTPs) are rare neoplasms, which are considered to originate from submesothelial connective tissue. The aim of this article is to present 15 new cases because of their different clinical behaviors and to discuss the treatment of choice of such neoplasms. METHODS: The records of 15 consecutive patients with LFTP operated at our Institution between 1995 and 2006 were retrospectively reviewed. Diagnostic procedures, clinical courses, and outcomes of these patients were studied. Total excision through a thoracotomy was performed in all patients.

The Journey of an Erupting Permanent Tooth and Its Fibrous Companion: A Pediatric Case Series.

Reactive proliferative lesions are commonly encountered in the oral cavity, primarily attributable to the continuous exposure of the mucosal tissues to recurrent mechanical trauma and microbial challenges. These lesions typically arise secondary to identifiable initiating factors, including dental plaque accumulation, calculus deposition, persistent local irritation, or the presence of foreign bodies. Reactive hyperplastic lesions represent non-neoplastic enlargements of the oral soft tissues that develop as an amplified reparative response following chronic irritation or minor trauma. The pre

PLAG1-Driven Lipoblastomatosis: Diagnostic Insights from a Case Report and Literature Review.

Lipoblastomatosis is a rare benign adipocytic tumour of infancy and early childhood, characterized by rapid growth. Diagnosis is challenging, owing to tumour heterogeneity and overlap with other pediatric soft-tissue neoplasms. PLAG1 rearrangement is the defining molecular hallmark, with an expanding list of fusion partners. We report a case of a 1-year-old child with a firm, nonmobile mass in the right thigh, which on CECT was deep-seated and heterogeneously enhanced. Gross evaluation of the excision specimen demonstrated an ill-circumscribed soft tissue mass. Histopathologically, the tumour

[Intrascrotal nontesticular tumors].

This is a review of literature data on rarely met with intrascrotal non-testicular tumors still not well enough clarified in clinical practice. Histologically these tumors derive from: 1. Epididymis. 2. Funiculus spermaticus and/or tunica vaginalis. 3. Tissues within the scrotum (fatty, fibrous, muscular, lymphatic, nervous). 4. Metastases. The individual types of neoplasms, some of them representing casuistic rarity, so far described as sporadic observations in the pertinent literature, are discussed. Adenomatoid tumor of epididymis and rhabdomyosarcoma are the most frequently encountered. Cl

A rare cause of small intestinal obstruction in children: a case report of calcifying fibrous tumor.

BACKGROUND: Calcifying fibrous tumor (CFT) is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor. Primary small intestinal CFT causing intestinal obstruction in children is exceptionally rare. Preoperative diagnosis remains challenging due to its nonspecific clinical manifestations. Ultrasound holds potential advantages in pediatric abdominal imaging, though further studies are needed to validate its utility for rare entities like CFT. CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-year-old girl presented with progressive abdominal distension for 2 months, accompanied by occasional periumbilical restlessness (suggestive of mild discomf

Solitary fibrous tumor of nasal cavity in patient with long-standing history of cocaine inhalation.

We report a solitary fibrous tumor in the nasal cavity of a 48-year-old woman who presented with a history of bilateral nasal obstruction and long-standing cocaine inhalation. Physical examination revealed a large mass involving the right nasal cavity and extending into the posterior aspect of the left nasal cavity. The computed tomography scan showed opacification of airways. During surgery, the mass was found to involve the entire nasal cavity, with extension to the right maxillary sinus, posterior nasal airways, and left nasal cavity. The mass was completely excised. Pathologic examination

Bone and soft tissue tumors of hip and pelvis.

Objective is to identify epidemiologic and radiologic criteria allowing specific diagnoses of tumors and tumor-like lesions in the hip region and pelvis, and to optimize pre-operative staging. Patients with pelvic tumors are usually older, and their tumors are larger relative to patients with tumors in extremities. The majority of tumors in the pelvis are malignant (metastases, myeloma, chondrosarcoma, Ewing-, osteo-, and MFH/fibrosarcoma), while those in the proximal femur are in majority benign (fibrous dysplasia, solitary bone cyst, and osteoid osteoma). Soft tissue masses in the thigh in t

Epithelioid and Clear Cell Solitary Fibrous Tumors: Clinicopathologic, Immunohistochemical, and Molecular Genetic Study of 13 Cases.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are ubiquitous soft tissue neoplasms known for their protean histology and potentially aggressive behavior. Although most cases are composed of a monotonous proliferation of spindle cells, some tumors show unusual cytologic features. We have studied 13 SFTs that were characterized by a predominant population of round epithelioid cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and clear cell changes. The tumors occurred in 8 women and 5 men, aged 36 to 80 years (mean=63 y), and were located within the orbit (3), lower extremity (3), retroperitoneum (2), abdominal cavit

Tumours of the soft (mesenchymal) tissues.

This is a classification of tumours of fibrous tissue, fat, muscle, blood and lymph vessels, and mast cells, irrespective of the region of the body in which they arise. Tumours of fibrous tissue are divided into fibroma, fibrosarcoma (including "canine haemangiopericytoma"), other sarcomas, equine sarcoid, and various tumour-like lesions. The histological appearance of the tumours is described and illustrated with photographs.

Cytopathology of solitary fibrous tumor: a series of 34 cases.

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT), a fibroblastic neoplasm characterized by a specific genetic alteration (NAB2-STAT6 fusion) and relatively specific immunohistochemical profile (STAT6/CD34 positivity), is seldom the subject of cytopathology data. We report our experience with scrape smears and fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies of SFT in a large patient cohort. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search was made of our cytopathology and surgical pathology databases for cases diagnosed as solitary fibrous tumor (SFT). FNA biopsy smears, imprint smears, and cell blocks were performed and exam

Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic neoplasms in patients with McCune-Albright syndrome.

BACKGROUND: McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS), which includes polycystic fibrous dysplasia, precocious puberty, and café au lait spots, is a rare disorder caused by somatic activating mutations of the GNAS gene. GNAS mutations have also been implicated in various sporadic tumors, including hepatobiliary and pancreatic neoplasms. AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of hepatobiliary and pancreatic neoplasms in patients with McCune-Albright syndrome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients diagnosed between 1995 and 2012 with MAS in a tertiary referral center for rare growth di

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the floor of mouth: a case report and review of the literature.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in late adulthood and usually occurs in the limbs, trunk, and peritoneum. Less than 10% of MFH cases occur in the head and neck region. The clinical manifestations and pathological features of MFH are atypical, and it is difficult to make a clinical diagnosis. We describe a rare case of MFH of the floor of mouth and provide our diagnosis and treatment experiences. Through this review, we also evaluate the origin, World Health Organization (WHO) classification, clinical presentations, pathological features, treatment me

"Chondroblastoma-like" epithelioid fibrous histiocytoma: A previously undescribed and potentially confusing variant.

BACKGROUND: Epithelioid benign fibrous histiocytoma has been considered a variant of fibrous histiocytoma, but is now considered a distinct entity, typically showing ALK expression. Most show typical morphological features, including an epidermal collarette and large, bland, epithelioid cells. We have recently encountered 2 examples showing an unusual pattern of pericellular calcification, a previously unreported finding. METHODS: Available slides were reviewed and clinical follow-up was obtained. RESULTS: These lesions occurred on the chins of a 16-year-old and 19-year-old female and showed

Multifocal calcifying fibrous tumor at six sites in one patient: a case report.

Calcifying fibrous tumors (CFT) are rare benign tumors. They usually affect children and young adults and the incidence is equal in males and females. The usual clinical presentation is that of a painless mass. A computed tomography scan typically reveals a well-demarcated calcified lesion. CFT usually presents as a solitary mass and the commonest sites of occurrence are in soft tissues, the pleura, or the peritoneum. Multifocal occurrences at the same site have also been reported. The first case of CFT was reported in 1988. We present a rare case of multiple calcifying fibrous tumors at multi

[Plexiform fibrohistiocytic tumour - case report of a rare low-malignant tumour with frequent localisation at the upper limb].

A male child aged nine months was admitted due to a slow growing, painless resistance at the palmar aspect of the proximal phalanx of the index finger. The intraoperative aspect of the tumour showed a yellow to white soft tissue mass with signs of infiltration. After special histopathological stainings, the diagnosis of a plexiform fibrohistiocytic tumour was confirmed. In literature almost 100 cases were reported since first description by Enzinger and Zhang in 1988. In this paper, 41 of 65 described cases showed tumour localization in the upper limb. This is the second case ever published in

Primary pulmonary undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma: A rare malignant lung tumor.

Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma (UPS) is a common soft tissue sarcoma that can develop in various organs, but lung involvement is usually due to metastasis. UPS originating primarily in the lungs is called primary pulmonary undifferentiated pleomorphic Sarcoma (PPUPS) and is exceptionally rare. It is a high-grade pleomorphic neoplasm with no identifiable lines of differentiation. Thus, it is essentially a diagnosis of exclusion that requires extensive clinical, radiographic and histopathological evaluation. Herein we report the case of a 49-year-old gentleman who presented with anemia and

Calcifying fibrous tumor of the terminal ileum mesentery: Case report.

RATIONALE: Calcifying fibrous tumors ("CFT") are recognized as extremely rare mesenchymal tumors with benign biological behavior and low rates of recurrence are seen after removal. The first case of a CFT was reported in 1988 as a possibly inflammatory triggered pseudotumor in deep soft tissue of children. Histologically, the tumor is typically composed of dense hyalinized collagen with paucicellular infiltration of lymphocytes and fibroblasts as well as psammomatous or dystrophic calcifications. It can affect soft tissue in very different anatomical locations, also intrathoracic and intra-abd

Benign solitary fibrous tumour of the pre-sacral space: MRI findings.

Benign solitary fibrous tumour, a rare mesenchymal tumour of adults, usually arises from the pleura. Only a few cases have been reported in the retroperitoneum and, to our knowledge, there has been no report of its imaging features. We describe the MRI features of benign solitary fibrous tumour arising from the pre-sacral space.
