Gradations in skin color are a consequence of differing amounts of melanin and their varying distribution. Although many darkly pigmented skin lesions are melanocytic and can be attributed to melanin content, the color of a black lesion can also be due to blood, necrotic tissue, or exogenous pigment. The source, pattern, and distribution of the color in black lesions usually offer important insight into its etiology. This contribution reviews conditions that can take on a black color, discussing the cause of the hue and any additional impact sun exposure may have.

Recent advances in genomics have improved the molecular classification of cutaneous melanocytic tumors. The plasminogen activation (PA) system is involved in the process of invasion and metastasis. BACKGROUND: Melanocytic tumors driven by MAP2K1 in-frame deletions are among the most recently described class of melanocytic neoplasms. The reported range of diagnoses and associated genomic aberrations in these neoplasms is wide and includes melanomas, deep penetrating melanocytomas, and pigmented epithelioid melanocytoma. However, little is known about the characteristics of these tumors, especially in the absence of well-known second molecular "hits." BACKGROUND: The distinction of Spitz nevi from melanomas with spitzoid morphology can be difficult. For lesions with overlapping histopathologic features, it may be impossible to predict their malignant potential with certainty. The current study evaluated the role of sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy in patients with such atypical spitzoid tumors.
