Cardiorespiratory effects of nicotine exposure during development.

Exposure to tobacco smoke is a major risk factor for the sudden infant death syndrome. Nicotine is thought to be the ingredient in tobacco smoke that is responsible for a multitude of cardiorespiratory effects during development, and pre- rather than postnatal exposure is considered to be most detrimental. Nicotine interacts with endogenous acetylcholine receptors in the brain and lung, and developmental exposure produces structural changes as well as alterations in neuroregulation. Abnormalities have been described in sympathicovagal balance, arousal threshold and latency, breathing pattern a

Nicotine and tobacco dependence: normalization or stimulation?

Nicotine and tobacco use produces mixed stimulant and depressant effects on various brain functions in animals and human beings. Results of electroencephalographic studies indicate that some tobacco smokers after 10-24 h of tobacco deprivation exhibit a decrease in dominant alpha rhythm, which, immediately after smoking, increases toward that of nonsmokers. This is evidence that tobacco smoking in smokers involves normalization of brain activity. Results of other studies of acute smoking effects in smokers show an increase in dominant alpha rhythm greater than that of nonsmokers. This is evide

Characteristics and perceptions of nicotine patch users.

BACKGROUND: Although transdermal nicotine patches are frequently prescribed to aid in smoking cessation, little information exists about their use in general medical practice. In clinical studies, nicotine patches have been found to be effective when used in conjunction with nonpharmacologic interventions, such as physician counseling and follow-up visits. This study examines the characteristics and perceptions of patients regarding treatment with nicotine patches. METHODS: Patients filling or refilling prescriptions for a nicotine patch at 17 pharmacies were asked to complete a questionnaire

Bright artificial light produces subsensitivity to nicotine.

Bright artificial light is a treatment for seasonal depression. Eleven (11) rats were exposed to bright artificial light (11,500 lux) for two consecutive weeks. The thermic response to nicotine was measured prior to light exposure and after one and two weeks of treatment. The thermic response to nicotine at baseline was -1.69 +/- 0.25 degrees C (mean +/- SEM). The thermic response to nicotine was -0.66 +/- 0.12 degrees C (p less than 0.002) after one and +0.31 +/- 0.14 degrees C (p less than 0.000025) after two weeks of light exposure. The change in temperature was different between weeks one

Brain nicotine cholinoceptor binding in spontaneous hypertension.

To study the role of central cholinergic mechanisms in hypertension, we have determined nicotinic and muscarinic agonist binding sites in the brain regions of stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP), using [3H]nicotine and [3H]cismethyldioxolane (CD). There was a significant decrease in specific [3H]nicotine binding in the cerebral cortex, thalamus, midbrain, cerebellum and medulla oblongata of SHRSP at 16-24 weeks of age compared to that of age-matched Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY). Scatchard analysis revealed 35% decrease in the Bmax value for [3H]nicotine binding in the SHRSP medulla

Early repolarization pattern with oral liquid nicotine.

While most sudden cardiac deaths are due to structural heart disease or cardiac ischemia, intoxications are rather rare and often unrecognized. Here we present a case of a 35-year-old patient who trickled cumulative 60 mg of the pure nicotine liquid. This led to cardiac arrest and ventricular fibrillation. After defibrillation the ECG showed pronounced early repolarization pattern with an AV block I°.

Nicotine-induced conditioned place preferences in humans.

This study investigated whether a conditioned place preference (CPP) could be established for a virtual reality (VR) room paired with nicotine. Forty-four undergraduates with nicotine use completed a 3-day, within-subjects protocol. In session 1, participants were randomly assigned to receive either a 4 mg nicotine or placebo lozenge. They were then confined to one of two visually distinct VR rooms, in which they completed three conditioning sessions. In session 2, participants crossed over to the other condition (nicotine or placebo) and the alternate VR room, then completed three conditionin

AKT2 Modulates Astrocytic Nicotine Responses In Vivo.

A greater understanding of the neurobiology of nicotine is needed to reduce or prevent chronic addiction, ameliorate detrimental nicotine withdrawal effects, and improve cessation rates. Nicotine binds and activates two astrocyte-expressed nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), α4β2 and α7. Protein kinase B-β (Pkb-β or Akt2) expression is restricted to astrocytes in mice and humans and is activated by nicotine. To determine if AKT2 plays a role in astrocytic nicotinic responses, we generated astrocyte-specific Akt2 conditional knockout (cKO) and full Akt2 KO mice. For in/ex vivo studies,

An Unusual Suspect: Hyperprolactinemia From Nicotine Pouches.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Elevated prolactin levels are associated with galactorrhea, menstrual irregularities, or infertility. While nicotine is known to affect prolactin secretion via dopaminergic pathways, noncombustible nicotine products such as pouches are rarely considered as contributing factors. The objective of this report is to describe a patient with hyperprolactinemia associated with nicotine pouch use, highlighting a potentially overlooked etiology. CASE REPORT: A 21-year-old woman with a history of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and bipolar disorder presented with infertil

Effect of Nicotine on Pulmonary Pathogenic Bacteria.

Exposure to cigarette smoke significantly enhances susceptibility to bacterial infections by inducing physiological and structural alterations, including immune system dysregulation. This exposure also augments bacterial virulence including biofilm formation, leading to severe infectious diseases and antibiotic resistance. Notably, cigarette smoke exposure increases the incidence of pneumonia by up to 2.5-fold and tuberculosis by up to 4.1-fold. Nicotine, a primary constituent of cigarette smoke, has been extensively characterized for its immunomodulatory effects. However, despite the wealth o

Electronic Nicotine-Delivery Systems for Smoking Cessation.

BACKGROUND: Electronic nicotine-delivery systems - also called e-cigarettes - are used by some tobacco smokers to assist with quitting. Evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of these systems is needed. METHODS: In this open-label, controlled trial, we randomly assigned adults who were smoking at least five tobacco cigarettes per day and who wanted to set a quit date to an intervention group, which received free e-cigarettes and e-liquids, standard-of-care smoking-cessation counseling, and optional (not free) nicotine-replacement therapy, or to a control group, which received standard cou

[Cannabis and nicotine in German music videos].

Smoking of tobacco and cannabis is widespread in Germany. Preventing children and adolescents from starting to use these products is an important goal of prevention. The aim of the present study was to examine how often depiction or mention of cannabis and nicotine use occurs in German-language music videos, which can be seen as advertising for smoking. The sample, which comprised the population of all German-language music videos listed in the YouTube Top 100 Charts in 2023, included 600 music videos. Using a coding scheme, the music videos were categorised as 'smoke-free' or 'not smoke-free'
