Divergent trends in near-surface ozone and nitrogen dioxide and ozone-attributable health burden in the Huaihe River Basin, China, 2013-2024.

Near-surface ozone (O3) has become an increasingly important air-quality and public-health concern in China, particularly in regions where reductions in nitrogen oxides have not been accompanied by corresponding decreases in photochemical pollution. The Huaihe River Basin is a densely populated and economically important region in eastern China, but long-term basin-scale evidence on the divergent evolution of O3 and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and the associated health burden remains limited. In this study, we used high-resolution satellite-derived near-surface O3, expressed as the maximum daily 8-…

Cross-Sectional Association of Ground-Level Ozone and Nitrogen Dioxide With Cardiac Mechanics Using Speckle-Tracking Echocardiography in the Cardiovascular Health Study.

PURPOSE: Ground-level ozone (O3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) are two of the most important air pollutants, with accumulating evidence linking them to incident cardiovascular disease. The tissue-level mechanisms by which they affect myocardial function remain incompletely understood, however. METHODS: We applied speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) to explore the relationship between chronic residential gaseous air pollution exposure and cardiac mechanics in community-dwelling older adults largely free of baseline heart disease. Average annual address-specific concentrations of O3 and NO2 we…

Residential exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and incident breast cancer among young women in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution has been classified as a human carcinogen based largely on findings for respiratory cancers. Emerging, but limited, evidence suggests that it increases the risk of breast cancer, particularly among younger women. We characterized associations between residential exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and breast cancer. Analyses were performed using data collected in the Ontario Environmental Health Study (OEHS). METHODS: The OEHS, a population-based case-control study, identified incident cases of breast cancer in Ontario, Cana…

Nitrogen dioxide exposure, attentional function, and working memory in children from 4 to 8 years: Periods of susceptibility from pregnancy to childhood.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution exposure during pregnancy and childhood has been linked to executive function impairment in children, however, very few studies have assessed these two exposure periods jointly to identify susceptible periods of exposure. We sought to identify potential periods of susceptibility of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) exposure from conception to childhood on attentional function and working memory in school-aged children. METHODS: Within the Spanish INMA Project, we estimated residential daily NO2 exposures during pregnancy and up to 6 years of childhood using land use regression …

A novel polymer-free everolimus-eluting stent with a nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide film inhibits restenosis and thrombosis in a swine coronary model.

BACKGROUND: Short-term outcomes regarding the safety and efficacy of a polymer-free everolimus-eluting stent (EES) with a nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide (N-TiO₂) film in a swine coronary model have been reported. However, the long-term results of the use of this type of stent have not yet been evaluated or compared to those of other polymer-free coronary stents. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the mid- to long-term safety and efficacy of a polymer-free EES with an N-TiO₂ film in a swine coronary model. METHODS: Polymer-free EES with N-TiO₂ films (n = 30) and polymer-free sirolimus-e

Factors Influencing Classroom Exposures to Fine Particles, Black Carbon, and Nitrogen Dioxide in Inner-City Schools and Their Implications for Indoor Air Quality.

BACKGROUND: School classrooms, where students spend the majority of their time during the day, are the second most important indoor microenvironment for children. OBJECTIVE: We investigated factors influencing classroom exposures to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), black carbon (BC), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in urban schools in the northeast United States. METHODS: Over the period of 10 y (2008-2013; 2015-2019) measurements were conducted in 309 classrooms of 74 inner-city schools during fall, winter, and spring of the academic period. The data were analyzed using adaptive mixed-effects le…

Changes in Transportation-Related Air Pollution Exposures by Race-Ethnicity and Socioeconomic Status: Outdoor Nitrogen Dioxide in the United States in 2000 and 2010.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in exposure to air pollution by race-ethnicity and by socioeconomic status have been documented in the United States, but the impacts of declining transportation-related air pollutant emissions on disparities in exposure have not been studied in detail. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to estimate changes over time (2000 to 2010) in disparities in exposure to outdoor concentrations of a transportation-related air pollutant, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), in the United States. METHODS: We combined annual average NO2 concentration estimates from a temporal land use regressio…

Trends of deposition fluxes and loadings of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in the artificial Three Northern Regions Shelter Forest across northern China.

This study provides the first estimate of dry deposition fluxes of criteria air pollutants (SO2 and NOx) across the Three Northern Regions Shelter Forest (TNRSF) region in Northern China and their long-term trends from 1982 to 2010 using the inferential method. Dry deposition velocities of SO2 and NOx increased in many places of the TNRSF up to 118.2% for SO2 and 112.1% for NOx over the last three decades due to the increased vegetation coverage over the TNRSF. The highest atmospheric deposition fluxes of SO2 and NOx were found in the Central-North China region, followed by the Northeast and t

Associations of long-term nitrogen dioxide exposure with a wide spectrum of diseases: a prospective cohort study of 0·5 million Chinese adults.

BACKGROUND: Little evidence is available on the long-term health effects of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in low-income and middle-income populations. We investigated the associations of long-term NO2 exposure with the incidence of a wide spectrum of disease outcomes, based on data from the China Kadoorie Biobank. METHODS: This prospective cohort study involved 512 724 Chinese adults aged 30-79 years recruited from ten areas of China during 2004-08. Time-varying Cox regression models yielded adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for the associations of long-term NO2 exposure with aggregated disease incidence…

Oligomerization and Nitration of the Grass Pollen Allergen Phl p 5 by Ozone, Nitrogen Dioxide, and Peroxynitrite: Reaction Products, Kinetics, and Health Effects.

The allergenic and inflammatory potential of proteins can be enhanced by chemical modification upon exposure to atmospheric or physiological oxidants. The molecular mechanisms and kinetics of such modifications, however, have not yet been fully resolved. We investigated the oligomerization and nitration of the grass pollen allergen Phl p 5 by ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and peroxynitrite (ONOO-). Within several hours of exposure to atmospherically relevant concentration levels of O3 and NO2, up to 50% of Phl p 5 were converted into protein oligomers, likely by formation of dityrosine c…

Associations between short-term exposure to nitrogen dioxide and mortality in 17 Chinese cities: the China Air Pollution and Health Effects Study (CAPES).

Few multi-city studies in Asian developing countries have examined the acute health effects of ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)). In the China Air Pollution and Health Effects Study (CAPES), we investigated the short-term association between NO(2) and mortality in 17 Chinese cities. We applied two-stage Bayesian hierarchical models to obtain city-specific and national average estimates for NO(2). In each city, we used Poisson regression models incorporating natural spline smoothing functions to adjust for long-term and seasonal trend of mortality, as well as other time-varying covariates. We ex…

Modulation of the electronic structure of nitrogen-carbon sites by sp3-hybridized carbon coupled to chloride ions improves electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction performance.

The challenges remain to develop cost-effective carbon-based catalysts with high activity and selectivity. Here, we synergistically modulate carbon-based electrocatalysts through Cl doping with intrinsic defects in sp3-hybridized carbon and apply them to the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). The designed electrocatalyst achieved high selectivity over a wide potential range (-0.7 to -1.0 V), with a faraday efficiency of 96.3 % at -0.8 V for CO. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and analytical studies show pyrrole N to be the active site of CO2RR, and doping Cl incre

Impact of Short-Term Exposure to Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and Ozone (O3) on Hospital Admissions for Non-ST-Segment Elevation Acute Coronary Syndrome.

In the context of recent climate change, global warming, industrial growth, and population expansion, air pollution has emerged as a significant environmental and human health risk. This study employed a multivariable Poisson regression analysis to examine the association between short-term exposure to atmospheric pollutants (nitrogen dioxide-NO2, sulfur dioxide -SO2, ozone-O3, and particulate matter with a diameter less than 10 μm-PM10) and hospital admissions for non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS). Daily data on NSTE-ACS admissions, air pollutants, and meteorological…

Tin dioxide decorated on Ni-encapsulated nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes for anodic electrolysis and persulfate activation to degrade cephalexin: Mineralization and degradation pathway.

In this study, bamboo-shaped carbon nanotubes exhibiting high nitrogen content and Ni encapsulation (Ni@NCNT) were effectively synthesized by a simple pyrolysis method. The catalytic peroxydisulfate activation for cephalexin (CPX) degradation was investigated using the prepared material. SnO2 was further decorated and fabricated on the anode material (SnO2/Ni@NCNT) for electrochemical degradation of CPX in an aqueous solution. Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that the SnO2 nanoparticles were uniformly distributed on the surface

Nitrogen dioxide-dependent oxidation of uric acid in the human oral cavity under acidic conditions: implications for its occurrence in acidic dental plaque.

The pH in dental plaque falls to below 5 after the ingestion of foods, and it may remain low if acid-tolerant bacteria grow in the plaque. Certain nitrate-reducing bacteria in the oral cavity can proliferate in dental plaque at low pH, and nitrite is detected in such plaque. In acidic dental plaque, NO(2) can be produced by self-decomposition of nitrous acid and also by peroxidase-catalyzed oxidation of nitrite, and it may oxidize uric acid, a major antioxidant in the oral cavity. Under experimental conditions that simulate oral cavity, the oxidation of uric acid by nitrite and by nitrite/pero

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles require K+ and hydrogen sulfide to regulate nitrogen and carbohydrate metabolism during adaptive response to drought and nickel stress in cucumber.

Crop plants face severe yield losses worldwide owing to their exposure to multiple abiotic stresses. The study described here, was conducted to comprehend the response of cucumber seedlings to drought (induced by 15% w/v polyethylene glycol 8000; PEG) and nickel (Ni) stress in presence or absence of titanium dioxide nanoparticle (nTiO2). In addition, it was also investigated how nitrogen (N) and carbohydrate metabolism, as well as the defense system, are affected by endogenous potassium (K+) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Cucumber seedlings were subjected to Ni stress and drought, which led to ox

The coupling of graphene, graphitic carbon nitride and cellulose to fabricate zinc oxide-based sensors and their enhanced activity towards air pollutant nitrogen dioxide.

It is desirable but challenging to sense toxic nitrogen dioxide (NO2) for it has become one of the most prominent air pollutants. Zinc oxide-based gas sensors are known to detect NO2 gas efficiently, however, the sensing mechanism and involved intermediates structures remain underexplored. In the work, a series of sensitive materials, including zinc oxide (ZnO) and its composites ZnO/X [X = Cel (cellulose), CN (g-C3N4) and Gr (graphene)] have been comprehensively examined by density functional theory. It is found that ZnO favors adsorbing NO2 over ambient O2, and produces nitrate intermediates…
