Nursing care and moral distress among nordic nurses: a scoping review of ethical challenges in contemporary clinical practice.

INTRODUCTION: Moral distress refers to situations in which nurses recognise the ethically appropriate action but are constrained from acting accordingly. Although widely studied internationally, moral distress has not been systematically mapped within Nordic healthcare contexts. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following Arksey and O’Malley’s framework and reported in accordance with PRISMA-ScR guidelines. PubMed/MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Scopus were searched (January–February 2024) for empirical studies published between 2015 and 2024 addressing moral distress or closely related e

Adult cardiothoracic transplant nursing: an ISHLT consensus document on the current adult nursing practice in heart and lung transplantation.

BACKGROUND: The role of nurses in cardiothoracic transplantation has evolved over the last 25 years. Transplant nurses work in a variety of roles in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to manage complex pre- and post-transplantation issues. There is lack of clarity and consistency regarding required qualifications to practice transplant nursing, delineation of roles and adequate levels of staffing. METHODS: A consensus conference with workgroup sessions, consisting of 77 nurse participants with clinical experience in cardiothoracic transplantation, was arranged. This was followed by su

Nurses' perspectives on implementing pediatric palliative care: a qualitative participatory study on the emerging role of the advanced practice nurse.

UNLABELLED: The implementation of Pediatric Palliative Care (PPC) in hospital settings places considerable demands on nursing staff, particularly during early phases of change. This study explored nurses' experiences, attitudes, and perceived support needs during the early implementation of a PPC concept at a tertiary pediatric hospital in Austria. A qualitative participatory design was applied. Four moderated focus group discussions were conducted with 18 registered nurses working on two pediatric wards where PPC beds were newly introduced. Data were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and

Ending Abusive Patient- and Family-Initiated Relationships in Alberta Nursing Practice: The Case for a Nurse-Specific Regulatory Standard.

Background/Objectives: Patient- and family-initiated abuse of nurses is widely recognized as workplace violence, but it also raises a distinct professional-regulatory question: when may a nurse end or restrict an established therapeutic relationship without creating an allegation of abandonment or discriminatory denial of care? This perspective focuses on Alberta and examines whether the province's nursing regulator provides a comprehensive, nurse-specific, all-registrant standard comparable in clarity to Alberta's physician standard. The concern is not the absence of every form of protection

Deprescribing in Hospice and Palliative Care: A Rapid Review of Clinical Tools, Nursing Practice Considerations, and Nursing Policy Implications.

Adults with serious illnesses and limited life expectancy often continue medications with little meaningful benefit, contributing to polypharmacy, adverse drug events, patient distress, and caregiver burden. In hospice and palliative care, deprescribing is a systematic, patient-centered process used when medication-related harms outweigh potential benefits. This rapid review examined contemporary evidence on deprescribing practices for adults with serious illnesses, with emphasis on medication burden, deprescribing patterns, current tools and frameworks, and the nursing role in leading, coordi

Sustained quality-of-life gains following nurse-led cardiac rehabilitation: A longitudinal study to support nursing practice.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a key component of secondary prevention in cardiovascular care. While its effects on clinical outcomes are well established, the long-term impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and the specific contribution of nurse-led care remain underexplored in real-world settings. AIMS: To evaluate longitudinal changes in HRQoL among patients who completed a structured nurse-led CR program, and to identify subgroup differences and predictors of sustained improvement. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted with 181 patients following myocar

What are nurse practice assessors' priorities when assessing student mental health nurses? A qualitative content analysis.

BACKGROUND: UK healthcare policy has observed over a decade of changes that has focussed on healthcare staffs' professional values as a marker for safe, high-quality care In 2018 the regulatory body for nursing and midwifery introduced several new proficiencies, with an emphasis on physical health assessment. However, a global debate has since surfaced regarding the generification of nurse education, which has been thought to have eroded field specific skills in mental health nursing. AIM: To explore the priorities of practice assessors, articulated within the open comments written within onl

Preliminary findings of a study on the practice of self-medication of antibiotics among the practicing nurses of a tertiary care hospital.

OBJECTIVES: Antibiotic resistance is indeed a global concern. It is of significant concern especially in the low-middle income countries because of the ease of accessibility, affordability, and absence of regulations pertaining to the dispensing of non-prescription antibiotics. This study aims to estimate the frequency and factors associated with the self-medication of antibiotics found among the practicing nurses. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study at a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan from July 2016 to August 2016. RESULTS: Of the 48 recruited nurses, 60.4

Impact of Basic Life Support Training Program on Nurses' Knowledge and Practice.

INTRODUCTION: Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) remains a significant cause of in-hospital mortality and morbidity in Ghana, with increasing incidence in the Central Region of Ghana. Although nurses are continuously present at patients' bedsides, their ability to recognize and manage cardiac arrest using basic life support (BLS) is under scrutiny. OBJECTIVE: The study evaluated the impact of a structured BLS training programme on nurses' knowledge and practical application of BLS. METHODS: A one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was used. Using a simple random sampling technique (lo

Public Perception of the Role and Professional Identity of Advanced Practice Nurses in Lithuania.

Introduction/Objective: Advanced practice nurses (APNs) play an increasingly important role in healthcare systems by expanding access to high-quality, patient-centred care. However, public understanding of the APNs' role remains limited, particularly regarding their autonomy, leadership, and scope of practice. In Lithuania, APNs represent a relatively new professional group, and to date, no quantitative study has examined public perceptions of their role, competencies, and professional identity. Understanding these perceptions is essential for supporting the successful integration of APNs into

Articulating Grief: Arts-Based Therapy as a Pathway to Resilience in Nursing Practice.

Grief and bereavement are profound yet underexplored aspects of nursing practice within residential aged care facilities. Registered nurses who work in these settings often form close emotional bonds with residents, making repeated exposure to death deeply impactful. This study aimed to depict the grief, loss, and bereavement experiences of registered nurses in aged care through an arts-based qualitative approach. Nine nurses participated in a one-hour creative session involving drawing or painting to express their experiences of grief and loss. The artworks and accompanying narratives were an
