Nutritional Disorders and Their Clinical Impact in Older Adults With COVID-19: A Retrospective Study From Qatar.

Introduction Older adults were at a higher risk of developing nutritional disorders, hospitalization, and death because of the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The burden of malnutrition and overnutrition in institutionalized older adults is a critical but under-researched factor of COVID-19 outcomes, particularly in the Middle East, where scarce data are available. The purpose of this study was to find out the prevalence of nutritional disorders among older patients with COVID-19 and to identify risk factors and clinical outcomes in Qatar. Methods A total of 55 adults aged over 60 years

Progressive Weakness and Hypoglycemia in a Child With Selective Eating: A Nutritional Mimic of a Fatty Acid Oxidation Disorder.

Severe selective eating in children can lead to clinically important nutritional deficiencies. We report a 5-year-old boy with autism spectrum disorder who presented with progressive weakness and hypoglycemia mimicking a fatty acid oxidation disorder (FAOD). His diet had consisted almost exclusively of white rice, and he had developed clinically significant manifestations of folate and vitamin A deficiency before this presentation. After several months of progressive weakness, he developed a generalized seizure with severe hypoglycemia and blunted ketogenesis during an intercurrent infection.

Nutritional Approach in Selected Inherited Metabolic Cardiac Disorders-A Concise Summary of Available Scientific Evidence.

Inborn errors of metabolism (IMDs) are a group of inherited diseases that manifest themselves through a myriad of signs and symptoms, including structural or functional cardiovascular damage. The therapy of these diseases is currently based on enzyme-replacement therapy, chaperone therapy or the administration of supplements and the establishment of personalized dietary plans. Starting from the major signs identified by the pediatric cardiologist that can indicate the presence of such a metabolic disease-cardiomyopathies, conduction disorders or valvular dysplasias-we tried to paint the portra

Role of nutritional vitamin D in chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder: A narrative review.

Chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder has complex and diverse clinical manifestations, including the simplest abnormalities of calcium, phosphorus and parathyroid hormone detected in blood, abnormalities of bone transformation and mineralization in bone, and calcification of blood vessels or other soft tissues detected on imaging. Patients with CKD-MBD combined low bone mineral density and fragility fractures are referred to as CKD-MBD with low bone mineral density. Vascular calcification refers to ectopic deposition of calcium phosphate in the blood vessel walls and heart valves. T

Does Human Papillomavirus Infection Influence the Frequency and Severity of Nutritional Disorders in Head and Neck Cancer?

BACKGROUND: About 87% of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients (mostly oropharyngeal cancer-OPC) are infected with human papillomavirus (HPV). Recent studies have demonstrated a significant correlation between HPV infection and nutritional disorders in HNC patients. Therefore, we formed a hypothesis that nutritional disorders or their severity in HNC patients may be associated with the occurrence of HPV infection due to known molecular differences in involved tissue. This literature review aimed to evaluate the influence of HPV infection on the occurrence and severity of nutritional disorders in

INTERGROWTH-21st versus a customized method for the prediction of neonatal nutritional status in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) generate complications and are one of the principal causes of maternal, foetal, and neonatal mortality worldwide. It has been observed that in pregnancies with HDP, the incidence of foetuses small for their gestational age (SGA) is twice as high as that in noncomplicated pregnancies. In women with HDP, the identification of foetuses (SGA) is substantially important, as management and follow-up are determined by this information. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the INTERGROWTH-21st method or customized birthwe

Exploring Eating and Nutritional Challenges for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Parents' and Special Educators' Perceptions.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disability that is frequently associated with food refusal, limited food repertoire and high-frequency single food intake mainly among children with ASD. Provision of nutrition can be very challenging due to the fact of these behavioural problems, either for the parents or special educators. Healthy nutrition is associated with providing and consuming nutritious food with results being in a good state of health. Semi-structured focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted among 20 participants at a National Autism Centre to explor

Nutritional interventions and cognitive-related outcomes in patients with late-life cognitive disorders: A systematic review.

There have been a large number of observational studies on the impact of nutrition on neuroprotection, however, there was a lack of evidence from randomized clinical trials (RCTs). In the present systematic review, from the 32 included RCTs published in the last four years (2014-2017) in patients aged 60 years and older with different late-life cognitive disorders, nutritional intervention through medical food/nutraceutical supplementation and multidomain approach improved magnetic resonance imaging findings and other cognitive-related biomarkers, but without clear effect on cognition in mild

Prevalence of nutritional deficiency disorders among rural primary school children (5-15 years).

The school as portal of personalised health care is an important concept. Significant number of school-age children are in need of adequate source of health care and nearly one-fifth of the population of every country comprised these children. Nutritional disorders account for the majority of morbidity, mortality and drop outs among them. One thousand and fifty primary school children (of both sexes) were studied from June to December, 1992. Prevalence of various nutritional disorders was 47.42%, anaemia and vitamin A deficiency were the commonest among them. Remedial measures followed by heal

Prevalence and correlates of disordered eating among adults who received weight-related nutrition consultations.

Disordered eating (DE) is common among patients attending primary health care settings. However, the prevalence of DE among patients who receive care in nutrition practice settings has yet to be estimated. We aimed to determine the prevalence of DE and its correlates among outpatients in a nutrition service. A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a convenience sample of outpatients (N = 502) who received care from 2022 to 2024 at the Nutrition Care Offices, which is a university nutrition service in Mexico City. A screening questionnaire was created to identify DE. Items were derived fro

Elimination Diets, Not Food Selectivity, Are Associated with Reduced Nutritional Status in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Background/Objectives: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in social communication, restricted and repetitive behaviors, and sensory processing abnormalities, including food selectivity. Due to the lack of effective causal therapies, alternative approaches such as dietary interventions are increasingly being explored. This study aimed to assess the impact of dietary factors on the nutritional status of children with ASD. Methods: A total of 103 children (75 with ASD and 28 controls) were included. Nutritional status was assessed using bioc
