Dietary habits, nutritional knowledge, and nutritional status among cardiological patients, including those with obesity and diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death worldwide. The increase in patients with obesity and diabetes raises the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Proper eating habits and adequate nutritional knowledge play a key role in preventing and treating these conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the dietary habits, nutritional knowledge, and nutritional status of patients hospitalized in a cardiology department in Poland, including those with obesity or diabetes. METHODS: The study was conducted at St. Barbara Regional Specialized Hospital No. 5 in Sosnowiec from January to

An Evaluation of Metabolic, Dietetic, and Nutritional Status Reveals Impaired Nutritional Outcomes in Breast Cancer Patients.

Nutritional status can change in breast cancer patients after treatment. However, the metabolic implications of those alterations are poorly understood. We used a cross-sectional study design to compare body composition, lipids, glucose levels, and adiposity indices in breast cancer patients with a matched control and a healthy group. We recruited women who completed their chemotherapy (BC group) and compared them with a group of women without cancer age and body mass index-paired (MC group) and a group of healthy women (HC group). We estimated body composition by bioelectrical impedance analy

[Limits of PINI (prognostic nutritional anf inflammatory index) in the evaluation of nutritional status in children].

The prognosis inflammatory and nutritional index (PINI) is a score based on albumin, glycoprotein acid and C-reactive protein levels. PINI was developed to evaluate nutritional and inflammatory status of patients presenting inflammatory syndromes with or without denutrition. In the present study conducted over a period of 6 days in the Pediatric Department of Bambri Hospital in the Central African Republic, we evaluated the usefulness of PINI for follow-up of 25 undernourished Central African children presenting marasmus (n = 15) or kwashiorkor (n = 10) associated with a laboratory documented

[Assessment of nutritional status--a part of routine clinical diagnosis: cholinesterase activity as a nutritional indicator].

Nutritional assessment has not yet been established as integral part of basic clinical diagnostic procedures everywhere, eventhough the prognostic relevance of malnutrition is well known. One of the reasons is the lack of nutritional indicators, which are specific of and sensitive for changes of the nutritional status on the one hand, and routinely analyzed on the other. We report on the utility of serum cholinesterase, which has the shortest half-life of all plasma proteins, to identify malnourished patients. 54 internal inpatients with malignant diseases or in septic state were followed up p

Implementation of standardized nutrition guidelines by renal dietitians is associated with improved nutrition status.

OBJECTIVE: Standardized nutrition guidelines that focus on a nutrition care process have been used by dietitians treating renal patients in Australia for over 3 years. We show the impact of this implementation on the nutritional status of a cohort of hemodialysis patients. DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective observational study, investigating a cohort of maintenance hemodialysis patients after the implementation of a systematic approach to the patient's nutritional care. SETTING: This study took place in public and private in-center hemodialysis units. PATIENTS: Patients included a cohort

[Total parenteral nutrition and evaluation of nutritional status for the identification of patients at high risk].

The importance of using standardised parameters in pre-operative patient assessment is emphasised. This will identify nutritional deficiencies that are often unrecognised but play a decisive part in the patients' post-operative course. Above all such an assessment enables the clinician to administer the appropriate restorative treatment especially in the elderly patient.

A look inside the gut as a clue to nutritional status.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Malabsorption and malnutrition are common gastrointestinal manifestations clinicians face, requiring diagnostic workup for effective diagnosis and management of the underlying cause. This review discusses recent advances in diagnostic approaches to malabsorption and maldigestion of macronutrients - lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates. We highlight underrecognized causes, available testing modalities, and ongoing diagnostic unmet needs. RECENT FINDINGS: Innovations in the diagnostic landscape are enhancing our understanding of malabsorption syndromes. Stool collection and ha

Nutrition Status of Female Winter Sports Athletes.

Eating disorders, especially restrictive eating, are common among female athletes. There are two main types of winter sports: those that are practiced outdoors on snow (-25 to +5 °C and 2500 m), such as alpine skiing and snowboarding, and those that are practiced indoors on ice (5-10 °C at low altitude), such as figure skating and ice hockey. The aim of this research was to identify the nutritional status and potential risk of female athletes practicing winter sports, considering the altitude of training. The sample was composed of 58 women (aged 19.81 years (SD: 12.61)) who were competitors i

Nutritional status at admission of children with cancer in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition at diagnosis is found in 10-50% of children with cancer in industrialized countries. In developing countries a large proportion of the normal paediatric population is undernourished and children with cancer often present late with advanced disease. Therefore it would be expected that many children with cancer are malnourished at admission. Malnutrition is associated with more severe chemotherapy toxicity and infectious complications. METHODS: All new paediatric oncology patients admitted in the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Blantyre, Malawi between 1, January 2007

The effect of convection on the nutritional status of haemodialysis patients.

Malnutrition, defined as insufficient protein-calorie intake, is highly prevalent in haemodialysis (HD) patients. It is commonly associated with decreased body weight, depleted energy stores (fat tissue) and loss of somatic proteins. It has been suggested that there may be at least two fundamentally different types of malnutrition in HD patients. The first is related to low protein and energy intake. This type of malnutrition may be amenable to adequate nutritional and dialysis support. In contrast, the second type of malnutrition is associated with inflammation and atherosclerotic cardiovascu

[Is it possible to improve the nutritional status of dialysis patients?].

It is well known that hemodialyzed patients show a protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM) due to several factors: dialytic and/or biologic age, diet, hormonal status, amino acid loss. The nutritional status of 44 HD patients was quarterly evaluated from september '87 to may '90 (32 months) and ten of them (5 M, 5 F) were treated by means of L-carnitine (6 g/ev/week) from september '88 to may '90. In the 5 treated males a net gain (+ 80 g/month) of the muscle mass was observed while the 5 treated females showed a low increase of fats. This trend was different (even though not significantly differen

[The nutritional and health status of the Latin American woman].

Latin America is a region where countries have various levels of socioeconomic development. Thus, the living standards and health status of its people differ significantly in the midst of a mosaic of social, ethnic, cultural and economic realities. Social inequalities and extreme poverty determine significant differences, not only in the magnitude of health indicators, but also in the type of pathology prevalent. People in the high socioeconomic levels are affected by nutritional diseases characterized by excessive food intake, while people from the low socioeconomic levels are affected by und

[Hemophilia: evaluation of the nutritional status and growth in childhood].

Haemophilia is a bleeding disorder characterized by decreased activity of the circulating antihemophilic factor, with different degrees of severity. The prognosis of the disease for an useful normal life is good, providing an adeguate follow-up. We think that the auxological determinants of growth and nutritional status must enter as points of a multicentre follow-up sheet of haemophilia in the pediatric age. We have tried such an approach in 13 patients; preliminary results have shown that all patients are growing well with some degrees of discrete malnutrition (arm circumference less than -1

Vitamin status during total parenteral nutrition.

Plasma concentrations of vitamins A and E, serum and erythrocyte folic acid, serum B12 and erythrocyte enzyme activations (to assess vitamins B1, B2 and B6 status) were measured at the start and finish of 39 courses of total parenteral nutrition (TPN). The daily regimen was standard. Plasma vitamin A, E, and folate concentrations and vitamin B6 status improved significantly during TPN. Three patients developed low levels of vitamin A and two patients developed high transketolase activations (B1 depletion) during therapy. The adequacy of vitamin replacement and the monitoring of vitamin status

Nutritional screening and extraglandular manifestations in Sjögren disease: a cross-sectional study using the controlling nutritional status score and prognostic nutritional index.

BACKGROUND: Sjögren disease (SjD) is an autoimmune disorder marked by exocrine gland dysfunction and systemic extraglandular manifestations (EGM). While nutritional status plays a key role in chronic diseases, its association with EGM in SjD remains underexplored. AIMS: This study aims to evaluate the nutritional status of patients with SjD using two validated tools the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score and the Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) and to examine their relationship with EGM. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 113 patients diagnosed with SjD, categor
