Effectiveness of Occupational Therapy Interventions for Musculoskeletal Shoulder Conditions: A Systematic Review.

People with musculoskeletal disorders of the shoulder commonly experience pain, decreased strength, and restricted range of motion (ROM) that limit participation in meaningful occupational activities. The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the current evidence for interventions within the occupational therapy scope of practice that address pain reduction and increase participation in functional activities. Seventy-six studies were reviewed for this study-67 of Level I evidence, 7 of Level II evidence, and 2 of Level III evidence. Strong evidence was found that ROM, strengthening…

Occupational therapy students' contribution towards enabling potential in a semi-rural community.

Occupational therapy students at the University of Pretoria engage in a 7-week service learning fieldwork in their fourth year. This fieldwork takes place in a semi-rural community. The article reports on a successful project where the students enabled adult learners with disabilities to improve their engagement in meaningful activities and trained the learners in selected prevocational skills. The students included a teacher from the center and she was given the opportunity to expand her skills in teaching as well. The ZOPP model of community project planning was used and proved to be a usefu…

Geriatricians and occupational therapists' perspectives on the role of occupational therapy in delirium care in long-term care settings: a multi-site study.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a frequent and serious condition in older adults in long-term care (LTC), often underdiagnosed and insufficiently ad … ded strong interdisciplinary collaboration and supportive teams. CONCLUSION: Enhancing the role of occupational therapy in delirium care requires clearer interprofessional definitions, dedicated training, and structural support in LTC. Structured collaboration between geriatricians and OTs may improve prevention and management outcomes for delirium in older adults.

Exploring the alignment between occupational therapy using Ayres Sensory Integration® with children and occupation-centred practice: An observational study.

INTRODUCTION: There is a longstanding debate about using Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI) as an occupational therapy approach, fuelled partly by queries about its alignment with the current occupation-centred paradigm. Despite many voicing their opinions, no studies have considered the extent to which occupational therapy using ASI with children might be implemented in a way that aligns with occupation-centred practice. This study was designed to explore that alignment. METHODS: This mixed-methods study involved eight occupational therapists certified to implement ASI. Data collection involve…

Occupational Therapy Approaches to Assessment and Intervention for Ankylosing Spondylitis: A Scoping Review.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a progressive form of spondyloarthritis involving inflammation of the spine, accompanied by deficits in occupational performance. Although occupational therapy (OT) for AS is not as widely documented as in other professions, studies have examined the benefits of OT on pain, function, and disability among AS patients. This review explored assessments and interventions used by OT practitioners working with AS clients, impairments addressed, and settings of practice. Eight databases and gray literature were searched in April 2024. A total of 17 records were included…

Online Occupational Therapy as a Rehabilitation Intervention for Parkinson's Disease: A Systematized Review.

Background/Objectives: Occupational therapy (OT) plays a crucial role in addressing functional limitations and promoting independence in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. OT interventions target motor skills, daily activities, and engagement in meaningful tasks. Telehealth, the remote delivery of healthcare services, has expanded access to rehabilitation, including OT for PD. While several studies have examined the benefits of online OT, a comprehensive assessment of its impact on functional outcomes and quality of life (QoL) is needed. This review aimed to evaluate the effects of online OT i…

A scoping review of coaching in occupational therapy: Mapping methods, populations and outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Coaching is proposed as a core enabling skill of occupational therapy and increasingly suggested for a diverse range of health populations. In recent years, research on coaching has proliferated, emerging from within and outside of occupational therapy. Yet, concern has been raised about the absence of theoretical underpinning and diversity of descriptions of coaching in occupational therapy, as well as low-quality evidence supporting its effectiveness. The aim of this study is to map the use of coaching by occupational therapists from 2007 to 2022 to identify the populations, se…

Anatomy education in occupational therapy curricula: Perspectives of practitioners in the United States.

The study of human anatomy is an integral component in the education of future occupational therapists, yet there is a paucity of research that explores the anatomy needs of students and new practitioners. As a follow up from a pilot study that surveyed a small cohort of practicing therapists, this article aimed to determine occupational therapy (OT) practitioners' views on anatomy course structure and content deemed important to include in OT curricula, entry level practitioners' anatomy knowledge, and application of anatomy in current practice. A Likert scale and free text questionnaire was …
