Calcifying odontogenic cyst associated with odontoma: report of two cases.

The calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is a nonneoplastic lesion whose possible association with other odontogenic lesions such as odontoma has been considered improbable by some authors. This paper reports two cases of true odontoma found concurrently with the COC.

The calcifying odontogenic cyst. Eight new cases and a review of the literature.

Eight new cases of the calcifying odontogenic cyst have been reported. In addition, a review of the literature produced an additional sixty-five cases. This lesion can occur in any age group, but it shows a peak incidence in the second decade. It is evenly distributed between the maxilla and the manidible and occurs with equal frequency in males and females. There does not appear to be any race predilection. The calcifying odontogenic cyst may occur in association with other pathologic entities. It is postulated that it does not in every case represent a separate pathologic entity but that it

Expression of podoplanin and TGF-beta in glandular odontogenic cyst and its comparison with developmental and inflammatory odontogenic cystic lesions.

BACKGROUND: The number of studies investigating the immunohistochemical characteristics of glandular odontogenic cysts (GOCs) is limited, due to its rarity. TGF-beta has been suggested to induce podoplanin expression in some lesions. We aimed to evaluate and compare podoplanin and TGF-beta expression in GOC and other odontogenic cystic lesions. METHODS: A total of 43 samples including five GOCs, 10 dentigerous cysts (DCs), eight unicystic ameloblastoma (UAs), and 20 radicular cysts (RCs) were selected and subjected to immunohistochemical staining using monoclonal antibodies against podoplanin…

Accuracy of Grayscale Value in Diagnosis of Odontogenic Keratocyst and Radicular Cyst.

Objectives: Radicular cyst (RC) and odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) are among the most commonly identified cysts in both the maxilla and mandible. With the advancements in 3D imaging techniques such as cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), there is an opportunity to thoroughly examine the boundaries of these lesions and quantify the grayscale of CBCT images, known as the grayscale value (GSV). This study investigated the reliability of CBCT GSV in distinguishing between RC and OKC. Materials and Methods: A total of 60 specimens with confirmed pathological diagnoses of RC and OKC were meticulously

Glandular odontogenic cyst: a retrospective clinical study of 10 cases.

OBJECTIVE: Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a less frequent odontogenic cyst with unpredictable clinical behavior and relatively high recurrence rate, posing a diagnostic and therapeutical challenges in oral and maxillofacial surgery. This study evaluated retrospectively management and outcomes in a cohort of individuals suffering from GOC, in the Department of Dentistry and The Fingerland Department of Pathology in Hradec Králové, Czech Republic. STUDY DESIGN: . Retrospective assessment was performed on 10 individuals with histologically confirmed GOC treated between year 2015 and 2025. C

Glandular odontogenic cyst-Our institutional experience: A case series.

Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a very rare and aggressive odontogenic cyst predominantly occurring in the anterior mandibular region. This lesion shows high recurrence and resembles lateral periodontal cyst and mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the jaws; therefore, in-depth diagnosis and long-term follow-up are mandatory in these patients. We describe clinical and histopathologic findings of five cases of GOC diagnosed at our institution. Careful microscopic examination and long-term follow-up of the patient are mandatory, considering their unpredictable behavior and tendency for recurrence.

Odontogenic Keratocyst of the Anterior Mandible Mimicking Lateral Periodontal Cyst.

Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is thought to be an odontogenic cyst of developmental origin that can arise at any place in the jaws, but mostly occurs in the mandibular angle and ramus area. It is clinically indistinguishable from a lateral periodontal cyst. A proper diagnosis can only be made based on histopathological examination. A 47-year-old woman presented with a gingival swelling on the inner aspect of the anterior region of the lower jaw. The swelling was of one year's duration and asymptomatic. Intraoral periapical radiograph revealed a well-defined oval radiolucency in the interradicul

Glandular odontogenic cyst: Review of literature and report of two cases.

Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a rare developmental odontogenic cyst from the cell rests of Serres. GOC is locally aggressive with a tendency toward recurrence. The most common site of occurrence is the anterior mandible with an asymptomatic presentation. Radiographically, it presents as unilocular or multilocular radiolucency. It bears histopathological resemblance to low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma. We report two cases of GOC occurring in a 16-year-old and a 33-year-old male patient with a review of the clinical presentation, histopathological features, and diagnostic aspects of GOC

Glandular Odontogenic Cyst of Anterior Maxilla - A Rare Case Report.

RATIONALE: Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a rare type of cyst of the jaws, which shares histological features with that of lateral periodontal cyst, botryoid cyst, radicular cyst with mucous metaplasia, or low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma, making it difficult to come to a definitive diagnosis. Not many cases of GOC have been reported in the literature. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 40-year-old male patient presented with pain in the upper right front tooth region. Mild extraoral swelling, obliterating the right nasolabial fold, was present. Tenderness on percussion was present in involved teeth.

Florid Cemento-Osseous Dysplasia with a Concurrent Glandular Odontogenic Cyst.

The presence of non-odontogenic cysts associated with benign fibro-osseous lesions of the jaws has been well documented. However, literature is scant when describing benign fibro-osseous lesions with associated odontogenic cysts. This case report highlights the presence of a concurrent developmental odontogenic cyst, glandular odontogenic cyst with extensive squamous metaplasia, in a patient with florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD). The postulated pathogenesis of these synchronous lesions is discussed along with a review of current literature. Surgical treatment is discouraged for florid CO…

Intraosseous carcinoma arising from an odontogenic cyst: a case report.

Carcinomas from an odontogenic cyst are not common, yet when they occur, squamous cell carcinomas are the most often seen. Among these cysts, the malignancy of keratocysts or dentigerous cysts are most likely. In contrast, a malignant transformation of a radicular cyst to an intraosseous carcinoma is extremely rare. In this case report, an intraosseous carcinoma arising from an odontogenic cyst in a 26-year-old male patient is presented. This case report clearly demonstrates the importance of the clinician's awareness of the malignant potential of apparently innocuous cystic lesions.

Periapical central giant cell granuloma misdiagnosed as odontogenic cyst.

AIM: To present the clinicopathological features of a series of four periapically located central giant cell granulomas (CGCGs) that were misdiagnosed and treated as being of endodontic origin. SUMMARY: Four cases of periapical CGCGs were submitted with a clinical diagnosis of either radicular or residual cyst. In two cases, root canal treatment had been performed previously. The patients were two women and two men whose age ranged from 31 to 85 years. Two cases were located in the mandibular premolar-molar region, and two in the anterolateral region of the maxilla. Two lesions were submitted

Glandular odontogenic cyst: analysis of cytokeratin expression and clinicopathological features.

The glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a rare odontogenic cyst which is still controversial in regard to classification, terminology, and origin. The first Japanese case of GOC is reported. Immunohistochemical examination for expression of cytokeratins and epithelial membrane antigen by monoclonal antibodies suggested that the lining epithelium was of odontogenic origin with metaplastic mucus-laden cells. We have reviewed the literature and compared the clinicopathological findings of the reported case of GOC with those of botryoid odontogenic cysts (BOC). The anatomical location, age range, …
