Duration and developmental timing of poverty and children's cognitive and social development from birth through third grade.

Relations of duration and developmental timing of poverty to children's development from birth to age 9 were examined by comparing children from families who were never poor, poor only during the child's infancy (0-3 years of age), poor only after infancy (4-9 years of age), and chronically poor. Chronically poor families provided lower quality childrearing environments, and children in these families showed lower cognitive performance and more behavior problems than did other children. Any experience of poverty was associated with less favorable family situations and child outcomes than never

Benchmarking statistical methods for analyzing parent-child dyads in genetic association studies.

Genetic association studies of child health outcomes often employ family-based study designs. One of the most popular family-based designs is the case-parent trio design that considers the smallest possible nuclear family consisting of two parents and their affected child. This trio design is particularly advantageous for studying relatively rare disorders because it is less prone to type 1 error inflation due to population stratification compared to population-based study designs (e.g., case-control studies). However, obtaining genetic data from both parents is difficult, from a practical per

Child maltreatment and attentional problems: A longitudinal birth cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether child maltreatment is associated with attentional problems in adolescence (14 years) and young adulthood (21 years), and whether outcomes depend on the type of maltreatment (sexual vs non-sexual). METHODS: Data from a population based cohort study involving 3778 mother-child pairs were linked with data from the state child protection agency to examine associations between child abuse and neglect and attention problems, measured using the Achenbach Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) and the Achenbach Young Adult Self Report (YASR). RESULTS: 245 (6.5%) participants

'Munchausen syndrome by proxy' presenting as battered child syndrome: a report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Child abuse is a major public health crisis and is on the rise. Dermatologists are frequently involved in its evaluation in differentiating abusive injuries from accidental injuries and in excluding pathological conditions that may mimic abuse. Battered child syndrome or physical abuse is not only a common form of child abuse but can also result from a rarer form of child abuse known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy. In this form of abuse, mother, who is the usual perpetrator, induces an illness or abuses the child for her own self-serving psychological needs. METHODS: We report tw

Mental health of preschool children and their mothers in a mixed urban/rural population. III. Latent variable models.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of clear and explicit models of the way various family and social influences on children's behaviour interact with factors such as temperament to produce behaviour disturbance in young children. METHOD: The following measures had been obtained on a total population sample of 1047 families with a 3-year-old child: the child's perceived cuddliness, difficult temperament, mother's unhappy childhood, maternal disturbance, social class, behaviour problems and overactivity. A latent variable analysis using the LISREL 7 program was applied to the data. RESULTS: A model t

The impact of home-installed growth charts and small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNS) on child growth in Zambia: a four-arm parallel open-label cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Childhood stunting remains common in many low-income settings and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, as well as impaired child development. METHODS: The main objective of the study was to assess whether home-installed growth charts as well as small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNS) can reduce growth faltering among infants. All caregivers of infants between 2 and 10 months of age at baseline, and at least 6 months old at the beginning of the interventions, in 282 randomly selected enumeration areas in Choma, Mansa and Lusaka districts in Zambia

Maximal opposition approach to phonological treatment.

The purpose of this paper was to evaluate a phonological treatment program of maximal rather than minimal feature contrasts by charting the course of learning in a child displaying a systematic error pattern involving the nonoccurrence of word-initial consonants. Generalization data indicated that the child learned 16 word-initial consonants following treatment of only three sets of maximal opposition contrasts. Overgeneralization data indicated that the child restructured his phonological system based on a larger concept of "word initialness." Basic components of and differences between vario

The relationship of child executive functions to parenting capacities in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivors.

OBJECTIVE: The current study examined associations between child executive functions and parenting capacities in long-term survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). METHODS: Participants included 188 parent-child dyads; children were at least 8 years of age, 5 years postdiagnosis of ALL, and previously treated with chemotherapy only. Parents completed the Parental Protection Scale (PPS), Child Vulnerability Scale (CVS), and Decision-Making Questionnaire (DMQ). Children completed measures of executive functioning and general cognitive abilities. Multivariate multiple regressio

Knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours of healthcare professionals regarding child maltreatment in China.

BACKGROUND: A new, recently issued national law and regulation in China conferred the responsibility of healthcare professionals in child maltreatment intervention. However, few studies have reported on the recognition and reporting of child maltreatment by healthcare professionals in China. The aim of this study was to assess healthcare professionals' knowledge, attitudes, and self-perceived behaviour in terms of identifying, assessing, and reporting child maltreatment cases in China. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 877 healthcare professionals from four provinces was conducted using a

Combating child abuse: the role of a dentist.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Child abuse has serious physical and psychosocial consequences which adversely affect the health and overall well-being of a child. However, in a developing country like India there has been no knowledge of the extent, magnitude and trends of the problem. This study reviews the overall scenario of child abuse in India as well as the role of the dentist in recognising and thereby combating this problem. RESULTS: Among health professionals, dentists are probably in the most favourable position to recognise child abuse, with opportunities to observe and assess not only th

Examining the effectiveness of home-based parent aide services to reduce risk for physical child abuse and neglect: six-month findings from a randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: This study set out to carry out a feasible, real-world, randomized clinical trial to examine the benefits of home-based paraprofessional parent aide services in reducing physical abuse and neglect risk in high-risk parents. METHODS: Families were randomly assigned to receive either parent aide plus case management services (n = 73) or case management services only (n = 65), collecting in-home data on physical child abuse and neglect and proximal risk and protective factors, just prior to service initiation, and again after six months of services. RESULTS: Mothers receiving parent

Neurosarcoidosis in Pediatric Patients: A Case Report and Review of Isolated and Systemic Neurosarcoidosis.

BACKGROUND: Neurosarcoidosis occurs in fewer than 5% of adults with systemic sarcoid. However, only 53 examples of neurosarcoidosis have been reported in the pediatric population, with nine of those cases being isolated neurosarcoidosis. We present the tenth case of a child with an initial presentation of isolated neurosarcoidosis and a review of the literature. METHODS: We searched the Ovid Medline database from 1946 to May 28, 2015. The Mesh terms "neurosarcoidosis," "pediatric," and "child" were exploded, and the Boolean "AND" was used to combine "neurosarcoidosis" with "pediatric" or "chi

Morbidity and death due to child abuse in New Zealand.

The purpose of this study was to explore under-diagnosis and racial bias among child abuse morbidity and mortality data from New Zealand. Computerized files of all intentional injury fatalities among children 16 years of age and under for 1978-87, and all hospital discharges for intentionally injured children 16 and under for 1988, were analyzed for evidence of physical abuse and sexual abuse. Among the 92 fatalities, only 21 of 68 deaths due to physical and/or sexual abuse were so coded. In both the mortality and the morbidity data, there was an association between the diagnosis of child abus

A cost analysis comparing seasonal malaria chemoprevention with and without Vitamin A supplementation among under-5 children in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Child mortality in Nigeria, significantly affected by malaria and malnutrition, remains a public health concern in the country. Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) and Vitamin A supplementation (VAS) are effective interventions that can be delivered through integrated health campaigns to reduce this mortality. This study assesses the cost implications of integrating these two interventions among under-5 children in Northeast Nigeria. METHODS: A cost analysis compared standalone SMC (Cycle 1 in July 2021) with SMC-VAS integrated campaign (Cycle 4 in October 2023) in two Local Go

Children's Disclosures of Physical Abuse in a Population-Based Sample.

Few studies have explored the disclosure of child physical abuse although child sexual abuse disclosure has been widely studied and debated for years. The present study explores the characteristics of child physical abuse disclosures and compares them to previously published findings on child sexual abuse disclosure from the same data. The data consist of a representative sample of 11,364 sixth and ninth graders. Participants responded to a wide variety of questions concerning experiences of violence, including child physical abuse and child sexual abuse, in the Finnish Child Victim Survey con

Pediatric coin ingestion: an unusual presentation.

A 35-month-old child presented to the Emergency Department with a suspected coin ingestion. A physical examination and radiographic examination revealed no evidence of the coin, and the child was prepared for discharge. When the child continued to refuse to drink, digital examination of the hard palate revealed the coin lodged behind the upper incisors. It was only possible to visualize when the patient's neck was fully extended. This case represents an unusual presentation of coin ingestion. It points out the importance of a meticulous physical examination and the need for reevaluation when f

Quality of life, mental health, and resilience in mothers of children with bladder exstrophy: Does family size matter?

INTRODUCTION: The challenges of raising a child with bladder exstrophy (BE) require parents to be strong and resilient in order to manage the crises that arise following the birth of a child with BE. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey included mothers from our IRB-approved Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex Database. A comprehensive questionnaire was administered, incorporating the WHO Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQoL-BREF), General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28), and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Participants were divided into two groups: Group A included mothers with only o

The centrality of victimization. Regaining the focal point of recovery for survivors of child sexual abuse.

Psychiatrists have tended to be reluctant followers rather than leaders in the proliferation of concern for child abuse that has developed over the past 25 years. By discounting the relevance of child sexual trauma, psychiatric clinicians and theoreticians overlook not only the therapeutic needs of many survivors but the opportunity to reconceptualize the role of trauma in the etiology and treatment of conditions presumed to be incurable. Present controversies over child sexual abuse are mirrors of past misadventures with uncovering. Since 1860, child abuse has been discovered and then discred

Child health on a dollar a day: some tentative cross-country comparisons.

Children living on a dollar a day-the international extreme poverty line-appear to have radically different chances of dying in childhood and being malnourished, depending on the country in which they live. In Kazakhstan, a child living on a dollar a day, has only a 10% risk of being underweight, while the risk facing a child living on a dollar a day in India is nearly 60%. The Kazakh child has a risk of less than 40 per 1000 of dying before his first birthday, while a child living on a dollar a day in Niger faces a risk of nearly 160 per 1000. Countries where mortality and malnutrition risks
