INTRODUCTION: Cherubism is a rare familial fibro-osseous lesion usually observed in children. The diagnosis is clinical and radiological. Outcome is generally favorable, but with a risk of ophthalmologic complications, especially lower eyelid retraction, proptosis, diplopia, displacement of eyeball and loss of visual acuity. Clinicians must be aware of these complications for proper detection and specific treatment.
OBSERVATION: We report a case of cherubism observed in a 10-year-old boy who presented exophthalmia with reduced visual acuity on the right due to reduction of the volume of the o

The neurofibromatoses are a set of at least two distinct disorders characterized by the development of nerve sheath tumors and diverse other features. Both are genetically determined as autosomal dominant traits, and both genes have been identified, with resultant major insights into pathogenesis. The neurofibromatoses have prominent effects on the visual system, which are important both for diagnosis and clinical management. This review focuses on clinical aspects of the neurofibromatoses, highlighting ophthalmological issues and recent advances in molecular genetics.

A 20-year experience of an ophthalmologist at a mental hospital, and the results of examination of over 2500 patients show an important role of ophthalmological examination in psychiatry. It is of definite help in the diagnosis of organic pathology of the brain, an indirect assessment of the status of the cerebral vessels, the conduction of clinico-genetic investigations, therapeutic and rehabilitation help to patients and control of side effects of psychotropic therapy on the eye. The psychic status of patients and the frequency of functional visual disturbances in them require the employment

The possible applications of biofeedback to the treatment of ophthalmologic disorders is reviewed. Studies have suggested utility in the management of blepharospasms, strabismus, nystagmus, and other eye movement disorders as well as the training of voluntary control of accommodation. Limitations of the current literature are discussed, as are prospects for the clinical use of biofeedback in ophthalmologic practice.

The object of this study is to answer the question: Is acupuncture of any use in ophthalmology? Ophthalmology today can boast of 95% accuracy in diagnosis, but modern therapeutics has not caught up with diagnosis. Despite an inability to explain in modern scientific terms the healing power of acupuncture, documentation of over 500 cases treated shows that this modality can be successful in the treatment of eye diseases, especially in cases of retinitis pigmentosa, high myopia, cataracts, surgical aphakia, controlled glaucoma and re-attached ablation retinae. We notice in these cases that impro…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a noninvasive therapy utilising low-level light energy to stimulate cellular processes, modulate inflammatory pathways, enhance mitochondrial activity, promote tissue regeneration. With growing interest in PBM as a potential treatment modality, this review synthesises current evidence and highlights challenges of implementing PBM across various ophthalmic conditions.
RECENT FINDINGS: Current ophthalmic applications of PBM can be categorised into established and exploratory therapies, differentiated primarily by the attainment of regulatory approv

Body temperature is one of the key vital signs for determining a disease's severity, as it reflects the thermal energy generated by an individual's metabolism. Since the first study on the relationship between body temperature and diseases by Carl Reinhold August Wunderlich at the end of the 19th century, various forms of thermometers have been developed to measure body temperature. Traditionally, methods for measuring temperature can be invasive, semi-invasive, and non-invasive. In recent years, great technological advances have reduced the cost of thermographic cameras, which allowed extendi

Several common ocular diseases are leading causes of irreversible visual impairment. Over the last decade, various mainly untargeted metabolic studies have been performed to show that metabolic dysfunction plays an important role in the pathogenesis of ocular diseases. A number of metabolites in plasma/serum, aqueous or vitreous humor, or in tears have been found to differ between patients and controls; among them are L-carnitine and acylcarnitines, which are essential for mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation. The metabolic profile of carnitines regarding a variety of diseases has attracted rese

Purpose: To describe emerging applications of machine learning (ML) in pediatric ophthalmology with an emphasis on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting visual development. Methods: Literature review of studies applying ML algorithms to problems in pediatric ophthalmology. Results: At present, the ML literature emphasizes applications in retinopathy of prematurity. However, there are increasing efforts to apply ML techniques in the diagnosis of amblyogenic conditions such as pediatric cataracts, strabismus, and high refractive error. Conclusions: A greater understanding of the pri…

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a depth-resolved imaging modality, which is able to achieve micrometer-scale resolution within biological tissue noninvasively. In the past 30 years, researchers all around the world had made several essential efforts on techniques relevant to OCT. OCT has become a routine process for eye diseases with different types. In this chapter, the three important stages in the development of OCT are briefly illustrated, including the time domain OCT (TD-OCT), the frequency domain OCT (FD-OCT) and the optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Each of the tec

Botulinum toxin is an important treatment for many conditions in ophthalmology, including strabismus, nystagmus, blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, spastic and congenital entropion, corneal exposure, and persistent epithelial defects. The mechanism of action of botulinum toxin for both strabismus and nystagmus is the neuromuscular blockade and transient paralysis of extraocular muscles, but when botulinum toxin is used for some forms of strabismus, a single injection can convey indefinite benefits. There are two unique mechanisms of action that account for the long-term effect on ocular alignmen…

Multifocal diffractive lenses are used widely in ophthalmology. This paper provides a general mathematical formula to summarize various multifocal diffractive lens designs and introduces a novel, design: the subzonal multifocal diffractive (SMUD) lens. Analytical and numerical methods of SMUD lens design are elaborated in detail. A number of trifocal and quadrifocal SMUD lens designs of high diffraction efficiency are presented. Fresnel zone spacing factors are introduced to take into account the incidence of a converging or diverging beam and the curvature of the substrate on which the diffra…
