Objective: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common risk factor for opioid use disorder (OUD). However, not all individuals with PTSD develop OUD when exposed to opioids. As the underlying moderators remain unexplored, this analysis aimed to determine if non-traumatic adverse experiences and stressors prior to the age of 18 moderate the relationship between PTSD and OUD. Methods: In a matched dataset (n = 830) of individuals with or without PTSD who reported lifetime use of opioids, the following non-traumatic adverse experiences and stressors were assessed: emotional abuse, emotional

Objectives. To examine prescription opioid and nonopioid analgesic use among US construction workers and their associations with pain conditions and sociodemographic factors. Methods. We analyzed data for about 9000 (weighted 11.5 million per year) construction workers who responded to the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey from 2011 to 2018. We applied both descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression procedures in the analyses. Results. An estimated 1.2 million (10.0%) of construction workers used prescription opioid analgesics annually. The adjusted odds of prescription opioid use

The paper describes the use of naltrexone, an opium-receptor antagonist, in the multimodal treatment of drug addiction and in particular in preventing the recidivation of heroin abuse. Naltrexone appears to lack the ambiguous characteristics of methadone which, in spite of not provoking all the effects of heroin, may be seen by the drug addict as a reasonable substitute, in particular if it is difficult to find. Since naltrexone is clearly a member of the drug category, and does not overlap into the pleasure category, it is possible to break the perverse triangle which is often created between

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is characterized by a lack of control in opioid use, resulting in psychological distress and deficits in interpersonal and social functioning. OUD is often associated with psychiatric comorbidities that increase the severity of the disorder. The consequences of OUD are dramatic in terms of increased morbi-mortality. Specific medications and psychotherapies are essential tools not only in the treatment of OUD but also in the prevention of suicide and overdoses. In our review, we assess the different types of psychotherapies (counseling, motivational interviewing, conti

The opioid G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) strongly modulate many of the central nervous system structures that contribute to neurological and psychiatric disorders including pain, major depressive disorder, and substance use disorders. To better treat these and related diseases, it is essential to understand the signaling of their endogenous ligands. In this review, we focus on what is known and unknown about the regulation of the over two dozen endogenous peptides with high affinity for one or more of the opioid receptors. We briefly describe which peptides are produced, with a particula

The subject of substance use disorders in the pediatric population remains a disturbing conundrum for clinicians, researchers and society in general. Many of our youth are at risk of being damaged and even killed by drug addictions that result from the collision of rapidly developing as well as vulnerable central nervous systems encountering the current global drug addiction crisis. A major motif of this chemical calamity is opioid use disorder in adolescents and young adults that was stimulated by the 19th century identification of such highly addictive drugs as morphine, heroin and a non-opi

The opioid crisis is an international public health concern. Treatments for opioid use disorder centre largely on the management of opioid withdrawal, an aversive collection of signs and symptoms that contribute to opioid use disorder. Whereas in the past 50 years more than 90 medications have been developed for depression, only five medications have been developed for opioid use disorder during this period. We posit that underinvestment has occurred in part due to an underdeveloped understanding of opioid withdrawal syndrome. This Personal View summarises substantial gaps in our understanding

Opioid treatment programs must have adequate financial capacity to sustain operations and deliver a high standard of care for individuals suffering from opioid use disorder. However, there is limited consistency in the health services literature about the concept and relationship of organizational financial capacity and key outcome measures (wait time and retention). In this study, we explored five common measures of financial capacity that can be applied to opioid treatment programs: (a) reserve ratio, (b) equity ratio, (c) markup, (d) revenue growth, and (e) earned revenue. We used these mea

Medical expenses are increasing year by year in Japan. However, the quantity of disposed medical opioids is not well known. In this study, we assessed disposed medical opioids in community pharmacies of Fukuoka city and in all of medical organizations of Kumamoto cities for 3 and 2 years, respectively. We collected official opioid disposal reports in Kumamoto city and Fukuoka City Pharmaceutical Association (FCPA) disposal information sheet in Fukuoka city. The total amount of disposed opioids was worth 7.1 million Yen from 2017 to 2019 in Fukuoka city, and 8.9 million Yen in for 2 years (2018
