OBJECTIVE: To investigate changes in the upper airway and its surrounding soft tissue and to characterize the extent and severity of upper airway obstruction in 136 obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) patients who were awake.

PURPOSE: To determine whether increasing myopia is associated with thinner peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) when measured by Stratus optical coherence tomography (OCT).
DESIGN: Observational cross-sectional study.
METHODS: Normal subjects with myopia underwent refractometry, axial length measurement (IOL Master), optic nerve examination, and OCT (12 fast RNFL scans/eye). PURPOSE: To compare retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) measurements between two ocular coherence tomography (OCT) instruments (OCT 2000 and Stratus OCT; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA) and compare their diagnostic precision.
METHODS: One hundred thirty-nine consecutive subjects were imaged (3 x 3.4-mm diameter circular scans) on the same day with each instrument. UV photolysis of caged molecules is a powerful method for studying cellular signaling. A new optical fiber sensor for tetracycline is fabricated with an anthracene-containing copolymer prepared from 9-anthrylmethyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate and n-butyl acrylate (PAMB). PURPOSE: The purpose of this research was to measure quantitatively changes in the position of the optic disc and nerve fiber layer during acute and chronic experimental conditions simulating glaucoma in monkey eyes.
METHODS: The positions of the surface of the optic disc and peripapillary nerve fiber layer were imaged in cynomolgus monkey eyes with the Glaucoma-Scope. Acute intraocular pressure changes was produced by anterior chamber cannulation. Chronic change was induced by trabecular laser scarring leading to chronic experimental glaucoma and by orbital transection of the optic nerve.

A new, portable fiber-optic biosensor has been used to detect staphylococcal enterotoxin B, a causative agent of food poisoning, at levels as low as 0.5 ng/ml in buffer. To evaluate the usefulness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (NFL) appearance in the estimation of glaucomatous optic nerve damage, we examined 335 eyes of normal, glaucoma suspect, of glaucomatous patients.
