From the Archives of the AFIP. Pediatric orbit tumors and tumorlike lesions: osseous lesions of the orbit.

Many extraocular masses involving the pediatric orbit have an osseous origin. The most common is the dermoid inclusion cyst; these cystic lesions may contain lipid and are most often found near the zygomaticofrontal suture, adjacent to an indolent-appearing erosion of bone. Some primary bone lesions may involve the orbit, producing a lytic or dense lesion with enlargement of the bone; these lesions include fibrous dysplasia, juvenile ossifying fibroma, and osteosarcoma. Fibrous dysplasia tends to produce a mass of ground-glass appearance with longitudinal osseous expansion, whereas juvenile os…

Manipulation of Spin-Orbit Torque in Tungsten Oxide/Manganite Heterostructure by Ionic Liquid Gating and Orbit Engineering.

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is the interaction between electron's spin and orbital motion, which could realize a charge-to-spin current conversion and enable an innovative method to switch the magnetization by spin-orbit torque (SOT). Varied techniques have been developed to manipulate and improve the SOT, but the role of the orbit degree of freedom, which should have a crucial bearing on the SOC and SOT, is still confusing. Here, we find that the charge-to-spin current conversion and SOT in W3O8-δ/(La, Sr)MnO3 could be produced or eliminated by ionic liquid gating. Through tuning the preferenti…

Orbital angiolipoma: a rare tumour of the orbit.

A quadragenarian male presented with gradual protrusion of the left eyeball for 7-8 months' duration. On examination, the best corrected visual acuity in the right eye was 20/20, while in the left eye there was no light perception. Contrast-enhanced CT scan revealed a well-defined fat-density mass in the extraconal compartment of the left superior orbit, causing inferolateral globe dystopia with resultant stretching of the optic nerve. Provisionally, orbital dermoid or lipoma was considered in the differential diagnosis. Anterior orbitotomy with complete excision of the mass was performed unde…

Orbital angioleiomyoma: A rare orbital neoplasm.

A 44-year-old male patient presented with painless progressive proptosis of left eye for the last 20 years. Examination revealed a purplish vascular mass extending from the medial orbital region to the surface of the globe. He underwent complete excision of the mass via an anterior orbitotomy approach. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry revealed a diagnosis of angioleiomyoma. No recurrence was noted at 1 year of follow-up. Angioleiomyomas are benign smooth muscle tumors with an additional vascular component. Their occurrence in the orbit is extremely rare with only three cases reported in…

Orbital tuberculoma masquerading as an orbital malignancy.

BACKGROUND: Orbital tuberculosis is exceedingly rare in areas where tuberculosis is non-endemic. A case of childhood orbital tuberculosis is reported, which the authors believe to be the first reported case of orbital tuberculosis in the Australasian region. METHODS/RESULTS: The patient a 6-year-old boy presented with proptosis and was initially mistaken to have an orbital malignancy. Treatment with antituberculous drugs resulted in resolution of the condition. CONCLUSION: This case served as a timely reminder of the need to keep awareness of the extrapulmonary manifestations of tuberculosis…

Orbital myiasis in neglected orbital retinoblastoma.

We describe a 4-year-old girl with a white reflex since birth, who presented with orbital retinoblastoma, complicated with orbital myiasis as a result of lack of compliance to treatment. The patient was managed with orbital exenteration followed by adjuvant radiation therapy. This case highlights the critical need for creating public health awareness and the importance of early medical attention to prevent such devastating conditions.

Orbital Dirofilariasis Masquerading As Orbital Rhabdomyosarcoma.

PURPOSE: To report a 12-year-old patient with a rapid growing orbital mass and imaging findings suggestive of rhabdomyosarcoma that was found to be dirofilariasis after mass resection. CASE REPORT: We describe a 12-year-old patient with a rapid growing orbital mass involving medial part of orbit and medial rectus muscle and imaging findings suggestive of rhabdomyosarcoma. Histopathologic examination showed the mass to be composed of granulomatous inflammation and the thread-like object to be Dirofilaria repens. The patient was well post-operation without morbidity. In this paper, we describe …

Orbital Lymphoma Masquerading as Orbital Cellulitis.

BACKGROUND: Orbital lymphomas are primarily non-Hodgkin type and can originate from the eyelids, extraocular muscles, soft tissue orbital adnexa, conjunctiva, or lacrimal glands. Orbital malignancies often represent a diagnostic dilemma for clinicians given their varying and atypical presentations. OBJECTIVE: To report a case of orbital lymphoma mimicking orbital cellulitis. CASE: A 66-year-old male patient presented with sudden onset of painful proptosis with visual impairment in the left eye for 15 days. On ocular examination, best-corrected visual acuity was 6/12 in the right eye and 2/60…

Orbital Plasmacytoma Mimicking an Orbital Abscess.

An 83-year-old male with a 15-month history of multiple myeloma presented with acute onset of swelling, redness, and pain around his right eye. CT scan was consistent with an orbital abscess. The patient was taken to the operating room for drainage of the orbital abscess. Abnormal tissue was encountered intraoperatively so biopsies were taken. His cultures grew only one colony of coagulase-negative Staphylococcus aureus. The histopathology from the biopsies showed a CD-138 positive plasma cell neoplasia consistent with a plasmacytoma. Plasmacytomas have been reported to present as orbital cell…

Orbital pseudotumour presenting as orbital cellulitis.

A 33-year-old woman presented to a community emergency department with a 4-day history of monocular orbital pain, photophobia and pain on extraocular movement. Findings included chemosis, conjunctival injection and restricted extraocular movements causing strabismus. She was diagnosed with orbital cellulitis during her initial emergency department visit and treated with intravenous antibiotics. On her second ED visit later the same day, a diagnosis of orbital pseudotumour was made after computed tomography revealed inflammation of the sclera, optic nerve, muscle and adipose tissue within the o…

The value of orbital echography in orbital practice.

Twenty-three consecutive patients with orbital masses who were referred to a major medical center and later had biopsies underwent ophthalmic echographic evaluation. The efficacy of orbital echography was compared with both the clinical evaluation and other orbital imaging methods (computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging). Echography was successful in all patients (100%) in detecting the orbital mass. The diagnosis was accurate in 18 of 22 patients (82%) echographically, 12 of 14 patients (86%) clinically, and 11 of 13 patients (85%) radiologically when a short differential was atte…

[Total expansion of the orbit for micro-orbitism].

Micro-orbitism which follows the very early arrested development of the optic vesicles hinders the fitting of a prosthesis. A total enlargement of the orbit is proposed which restores the normal dimensions and enables facial symmetry to be re-established. The risks and advantages of this procedure are discussed.

Orbital expansion for anophthalmia and micro-orbitism.

In severe cases of microphthalmos or anophthalmos, the bony orbital cavity is often too small to allow one to create a satisfactory socket for a prosthesis. An omnidirectional expansion of the orbit, by osteotomies done in a step-like fashion, allows the creation of a larger bony cavity and improves the symmetry of the face. The risks of the craniotomy and of the mobilization of the free bone pieces are discussed.

Orbital neurofibromatosis: involvement of the orbital floor.

Neurofibromatosis has been reported to involve the eye and orbit by causing irregularities of the sphenoid and other facial bones and enlargement of the foramina. To our knowledge, abnormalities of the orbital floor, however, have not been attributed to this disease in the literature until now. Two patients with neurofibromatosis had orbital floor involvement. Multiple neurofibromas eroding the orbital floor threatened vision in one patient. The other case, seen after trauma, had a condition simulating that of a blow-out fracture. Diagnostic workup with adequate roentgenography, especially tom…
