Hepatitis C-like viruses are produced in cells from rabbit and hare DNA.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV), a major causative agent of acute and chronic liver disease, belongs to the Flaviviridæ family and contains a single-strand positive-sense RNA genome, which upon virus entry and uncoating, functions as mRNAs and thus can be directly translated into proteins by host cell machinery. To date the HCV origin remains unclear and HCV life cycle and pathogenesis are not enlightened processes due to the absence of HCV efficient cell cultures systems or animals models. Here we show that rabbit and hare HCV-like viruses, RHCV and HHCV respectively, are formed after the inoculation

Maxillary sinusitis as an indicator of respiratory health in past populations.

Chronic infectious respiratory disease in a past human population is investigated through the quantification of maxillary sinusitis among Iroquoian horticulturists. Three hundred forty-eight right and left maxillae of a Southern Ontario Iroquoian skeletal sample, Uxbridge Ossuary, ca. AD 1440, were examined for evidence of chronic infection (minimum number of individuals = 207: 114 adults, 22 adolescents, 38 juveniles and 33 infants). Modern clinical criteria were applied to differentiate lesions of respiratory and dental origin. Osseous lesions of the maxillary sinuses were observed in 50% of

The role of transesophageal echocardiography in identifying anomalous coronary arteries.

BACKGROUND: The study objective was to evaluate the role of transesophageal echocardiography in identifying the origin of anomalous coronary arteries and confirming their course in relation to the great vessels. The diagnosis of coronary anomalies is made by angiography. The anomalous left main artery with a course between the pulmonary artery and the aorta has been associated with myocardial infarction and sudden death. The course of these anomalous coronary arteries is difficult to demonstrate by angiography alone. METHODS AND RESULTS: Nine patients with angiographically confirmed anomalous

Multiple growth cartilages in the neural arch.

The origin of growth cartilages in the neural arch of human fetal vertebrae was investigated in an attempt to resolve the conflicting opinion on ossification in this region. Serial sections of developing vertebrae were examined, and three growth cartilages for each half of the neural arch were found. They have their origin from a single center of ossification. Endochondral bone formation similar to ossification in the diaphysis of a long bone occurs in the neural arch. This information may help in the understanding of how vertebral malformations such as scoliosis and spondylolysis occur during

Anomalous origin of the right coronary artery from the pulmonary artery: surgical re-implantation into the aorta.

Anomalous origin of the right coronary artery from the pulmonary artery is rare (only 200 cases have been reported in total), potentially life-threatening and with an uncertain prognosis. Patient characteristics are only available in half the reported cases. Easy to miss, anomalous origin of the right coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ARCAPA) is usually diagnosed in association with concomitant cardiac anomalies. Techniques for its correction are rarely discussed, but the restoration of a two-coronary system is optimal. We report details of the surgical repair of ARCAPA in a 17-year-o

Haplotype analysis of the X chromosome in patients with Turner syndrome in order to verify the possible effect of imprinting on selected symptoms.

AIMS: Turner syndrome is the only chromosome monosomy that is postnatally compatible with life. The reported incidence of TS is 1 in 2500 liveborn girls. The phenotype of these girls is highly variable, with cardiac abnormalities being life-threatening defects. The aim of the study was to reveal the possible influence of the parental origin of the X chromosome in these patients on a selected phenotype that is associated with Turner syndrome. Selected symptoms and parameters were: a bicuspid aortic valve, aortic coarctation, lymphoedema, pterygium colli, coeliac disease, thyroiditis, otitis med

[Amyloidosis: classification, diagnosis, and treatment].

Amyloidoses are rare protein-misfolding disorders characterized by the deposition of insoluble fibrillar aggregates, leading to potentially life-threatening organ damage. These deposits can be systemic or localized. Systemic amyloidoses are often associated with monoclonal gammopathies, chronic inflammatory conditions, or have a hereditary origin. Treatment strategies primarily focus on reducing the production of amyloidogenic proteins-depending on the specific protein and its origin-through therapies such as chemotherapy, anti-inflammatory agents, or gene-silencing approaches. Early diagnosis

Necrotizing upper limb fasciitis in a newborn: an uncommon life-threatening event.

Necrotizing fasciitis is an uncommon but life-threatening infection in the pediatric population. It is rarely reported in neonates. In these rare cases, the reported origin of infection was the umbilical cord stump, infection due to circumcision, and similar lesions. We hereby report a 3-week-old neonate sustaining necrotizing fasciitis without detectable origin of infection. We describe the clinical course of her illness, the diagnostic process, and eventual surgical intervention. We discuss the importance of awareness to this potentially lethal infectious disease and the need for urgent use

Acute chest syndrome in sickle-cell trait; Two case reports in persons of Mediterranean origin and review of the literature.

Sickle-cell trait has been characterized as a benign condition. However, life-threatening complications sometimes develop. Acute chest syndrome (ACS) is usually described in homozygous sickle cell disease, but it rarely develops in individuals with sickle-cell trait. Two cases of ACS in patients with sickle-cell trait are reported here. Factors such as advanced age at the time of presentation and absent past medical and family history can be misleading. Although ACS in sickle-cell trait has thus far only been reported in persons of Afro-American origin, persons of Mediterranean origin can, on

'He supported me 100%': Mexican-immigrant fathers, daughters, and adolescent sexual health.

Objective: First and second generation Mexican-origin adolescents in the U.S. face social and economic disadvantage and sexual health disparities. Although fathers can support child and adolescent development, the literature has portrayed Mexican-origin immigrant fathers as emotionally distant and sexist. This study aims to treat migration as a social determinant of health to examine father-daughter relationships and adolescent sexual health in Mexican-origin immigrant families. Methods: Integrating qualitative data from life history interviews with 21 Mexican-origin young women in immigrant fa

Associations Between Paternal Pre-Conceptional Body Mass Index and Lifestyle Factors and Offspring Weight Development.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that pre-conceptional paternal factors, including BMI and diet, may influence offspring development. OBJECTIVES: We examined the associations between paternal BMI, dietary protein intake, glycemic index (GI), smoking and alcohol consumption and offspring development during the first 5 years of life. METHODS: This secondary analysis of an RCT included 162 father-child pairs from pregnancies among women with pre-pregnancy overweight or obesity. Paternal characteristics were reported at gestational week 15, reflecting the preceding 3 months. Offspring anthropometry

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare condition in children associated with immunodeficiency, life threatening infections and malignancy. Infection associated hemophagocytosis responds well to appropriate antimicrobioal therapy and rarely to steroids when the infective agent is suspected to be of viral origin.

[Morphofunctional correlation in congenital anomalies of the coronary arteries. II. The ectopic origin of the coronary arteries].

The authors describe the morphogenesis and functional alterations of the coronary arterial net in the ectopic coronary arteries: a) with origin in the aorta or its branches and b) with origin in the pulmonary artery. The coronary arteries are developed from: 1) endothelial sprouts localized in the great arteries walls at the level of the sigmoidal values, 2) right and left subepicardial vascular network and 3) the intramyocardial sinusoids. Most of the ectopic coronary arteries result from alterations in the connection between these three embryonic elements. The deviation of one of the subepic

Social Birth: Rites of Passage for the Newborn.

Rites of passage mark important changes during human life and, for the neonate, its transition from intrauterine life into society. Their original intent was to purify the body from blood and meconium. But the cleansing rites had a spiritual dimension from the very start. When the rites of Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Jewish, Greek, Roman, Hindu, Nordic, Muslim, Maya, and Christian cultures are briefly compared, they reveal a remarkable similarity. What most rites had in common was the cleansing of the body, or sprinkling it with water; special clothing; the exorcism of evil spirits; blessings and

Fistula of right internal thoracic artery as a rare cause of chest pain.

Variation in the origin of the internal thoracic arteries has been previously described and reported in the literature; however, there has been no report of an anomalous termination of the right internal thoracic artery into the pulmonary vein persisting and presenting in adult life. We report the case of the right internal thoracic artery originating from the first part of subclavian artery but terminating into the right superior pulmonary vein that presented during the third decade of life.

The bacterial replication origin BUS promotes nucleobase capture.

Genome duplication is essential for the proliferation of cellular life and this process is generally initiated by dedicated replication proteins at chromosome origins. In bacteria, DNA replication is initiated by the ubiquitous DnaA protein, which assembles into an oligomeric complex at the chromosome origin (oriC) that engages both double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) and single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) to promote DNA duplex opening. However, the mechanism of DnaA specifically opening a replication origin was unknown. Here we show that Bacillus subtilis DnaAATP assembles into a continuous oligomer at the

Exposed Areas Above Sea Level on Earth >3.5 Gyr Ago: Implications for Prebiotic and Primitive Biotic Chemistry.

How life began on Earth is still largely shrouded in mystery. One of the central ideas for various origins of life scenarios is Darwin's "wa … operties of information storage and replication prone to random mutations, the hallmark of both the origin of life and evolution. However, there is one problematic issue with this scenario: On the Earth >3.5 Gyr ago there would have likely been no exposed continental crust above sea level. Genomic divergence and lack of introgressive hybridization between two 13-year periodical cicadas support life cycle switching in the face of climate change.

Life history evolution spurred by post-Pleistocene climatic change is hypothesized to be responsible for the present diversity in periodical cicadas (Magicicada), but the mechanism of life cycle change has been controversial. To understand the divergence process of 13-year and 17-year cicada life cycles, we studied genetic relationships between two synchronously emerging, parapatric 13-year periodical cicada species in the Decim group, Magicicada tredecim and M. neotredecim. The latter was hypothesized to be of hybrid origin or to have switched from a 17-year cycle via developmental plasticity
