[Update on current care guidelines: management of adult obesity].

Diagnosis is based on body mass index and waist circumference. The aim of treatment is to prevent and alleviate obesity comorbidities (e.g. type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, sleep apnoea and osteoarthritis) through a permanent weight reduction of at least 5%. The core element in management is lifestyle counselling on eating and exercise behaviours. This should be organised in primary care. Modalities supporting lifestyle changes include very-low-energy diets and orlistat drug therapy. Obesity surgery is indicated in cases of morbid obesity, if the appropriate conservative therapies do

Phytochemical Profiling and Evaluation of Antioxidant and Enzyme Inhibitory Activities of Selected Endemic Salvia Species (Lamiaceae) From Türkiye.

Salvia (Lamiaceae) species have been used in food, cosmetics, and medicine for centuries. Besides their use as food, these species are potential raw material candidates for pharmaceuticals due to their rich phytochemical content. Studies on the endemic Turkish Salvia species examined in this study, S. ballsiana (Rech.f.) Hedge, S. hedgeana Dönmez, and S. vermifolia Hedge & Hub.-Mor., are very limited. The aim of this study is to evaluate the antioxidant, antidiabetic, and anti-obesity effects of these species and to elucidate their chemical profiles. In this context, the antidiabetic effect wa

White Tea Consumption Alleviates Anthropometric and Metabolic Parameters in Obese Patients.

Background and Objectives: Obesity and related disorders are an increasing global health problem. Achieving and maintaining long-term weight loss through lifestyle changes and/or pharmacological interventions have not met expectations. Dietary supplements and alternative treatments have also shown limited effectiveness in this regard. The consumption of green tea in general has been shown to benefit obese patients, with effects attributed to caffeine, catechins, polyphenols and other components. However, the potential of white tea to prevent and treat the negative effects of obesity has not be

Comparison of the Efficacy of Anti-Obesity Medications in Real-World Practice.

PURPOSE: Anti-obesity medications (AOMs), along with lifestyle interventions, are effective means of inducing and maintaining weight loss in patients with obesity. Although the efficacy of AOMs has been reported, there have been no direct comparisons of these drugs. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to compare the efficacy of all the AOMs available in Korea in a real-world setting. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The body weight and composition of 205 adults treated with phentermine, phentermine/topiramate, liraglutide, naltrexone/bupropion, lorcaserin, or orlistat for at least 6 months were an

The Bioprotective Effects of Marigold Tea Polyphenols on Obesity and Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in High-Fat-Sugar Diet-Fed Rats.

Background: The research is aimed at exploring the potential of marigold petal tea (MPT), rich in polyphenol contents, against oxidative stress and obesity in a rat model following a high-fat-sugar diet (HFSD). Methods: The MPT was prepared through the customary method of decoction and was subjected to analysis for its polyphenol composition using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). Two specific doses of MPT, namely, 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight (BW), were chosen for the study-referred to as MPT-250 and MPT-500, respectively. Result: The main phenolic acids and fl

SEDDS for intestinal absorption of insulin: Application of Caco-2 and Caco-2/HT29 co-culture monolayers and intra-jejunal instillation in rats.

To face the challenges of oral delivery of peptide and protein (P/P) drugs, self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDSs) containing monoacyl phosphatidylcholine (MAPC), Labrasol (LAB) and medium-chain (MC) monoglycerides as permeation enhancers (PEs) were evaluated for their effect on intestinal absorption of insulin. In this study, insulin was complexed with phosphatidylcholine (SPC) to form an insulin-SPC complex (ins-SPC) with increased lipophilicity. The following three SEDDSs: MCT(MAPC) (MC triglycerides and MAPC included), MCT(RH40) (MC triglycerides and Kolliphor® RH40 included) and

Nutraceutical resources for diabetes prevention--an update.

There is considerable need for safe agents that can reduce risk for diabetes in at-risk subjects. Although certain drugs--including metformin, acarbose, and orlistat--have shown diabetes-preventive activity in large randomized studies, nutraceuticals have potential in this regard as well. Natural agents which slow carbohydrate absorption may mimic the protective effect of acarbose; these include: soluble fiber--most notably glucomannan; chlorogenic acid--likely responsible for reduction in diabetes risk associated with heavy coffee intake; and legume-derived alpha-amylase inhibitors. There doe

Clinical outcomes associated with anti-obesity medications in real-world practice: A systematic literature review.

Anti-obesity medications (AOMs) are efficacious and well tolerated in randomized controlled trials, but findings may not be generalizable to routine clinical practice. This systematic literature review aimed to identify real-world (RW) evidence for AOMs to treat adults ( ≥ 18 years) with obesity or overweight (BMI  ≥  27 kg/m2 ). Searches conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Database, National Health Service (NHS) Economic Evaluation Database, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for studies of relevant FDA-approved AOMs yielded 41 publications. Marine-Derived Padina Minor Extract Improves Lipid and Glucose Metabolism in Obese Rats: Evidence for PPARγ and ADIPOR1 Modulation.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Obesity is a multifactorial metabolic disorder characterized by excessive adipose accumulation and dysregulated lipid and glucose homeostasis. Marine brown algae contain diverse bioactive compounds with potential metabolic benefits; however, the in vivo anti-obesity effects of Padina minor remain insufficiently characterized. METHODS: This study evaluated the effects of P. minor ethanolic extract on adipose metabolism and metabolic parameters in obese rats induced by a high-fat diet (HFD). Male Wistar rats (n = 36) were rendered obese via HFD and treated with P. minor e

Association of long-term weight management pharmacotherapy with multiple health outcomes: an umbrella review and evidence map.

BACKGROUND: Multiple meta-analyses (MAs) have demonstrated that six pharmacotherapies, including orlistat, liraglutide, phentermine/topiramate, naltrexone/bupropion, semaglutide, and tirzepatide, improve weight loss and weight maintenance. However, few studies have synthesized and evaluated the quality of this evidence. OBJECTIVE: To identify the relevant MAs of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that explored the association between the six pharmacotherapies and obesity-related health outcomes and adverse events (AEs). METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted across PubMed, Embase, Coch

Appetite Suppression and Antiobesity Effect of a Botanical Composition Composed of Morus alba, Yerba mate, and Magnolia officinalis.

Background. Obesity and its comorbidities continue to challenge the world at an alarming rate. Although the long term solution lies on lifestyle changes in the form of dieting and exercising, drug, medical food, or dietary supplement interventions are required for those who are already obese. Here we describe a standardized blend composed of extracts from three medicinal plants: Morus alba, Yerba mate, and Magnolia officinalis for appetite suppression and metabolic disorders management. Method. Extracts were standardized to yield a composition designated as UP601. Appetite suppression activity

Obesity Pharmacotherapy.

Although diet, physical activity, and behavioral modifications are the cornerstones of weight management, weight loss achieved by lifestyle modifications alone is often limited and difficult to maintain. Pharmacotherapy for obesity can be considered if patients have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or greater or BMI of 27 kg/m2 or greater with weight-related comorbidities. The 6 most commonly used antiobesity medications are phentermine, orlistat, phentermine/topiramate extended release, lorcaserin, naltrexone sustained release (SR)/bupropion SR, and liraglutide 3.0 mg. [Ten questions on the treatment of obesity: from dieting to surgery].

Advantages and risk of weight reduction achieved by combining diets or unbalanced diets with restriction of carbohydrates or fat are discussed. Nutriments differ according to their density, their flavour, their satiating, and their thermogenic effect. Food is also a source of pleasure and a remedy to frustration. One of the problems of dieting is that most patients regain the weight they have lost due to a hypometabolism secondary to caloric restriction. Only physical exercise together with behavior therapy are able to slow down this weight regain. The indication of drug treatment with orlista

Current Long-Term Pharmacotherapies for the Management of Obesity.

Obesity is a serious and growing worldwide health challenge associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis, some cancers, sleep apnea, asthma, and nonalcoholic fatty liver. The Korean Society for the Study of Obesity recommends that pharmacotherapy should be considered when intensive lifestyle modifications fail to achieve a weight reduction in obese patients with a body mass index ≥25 kg/m2. Long-term medications for obesity have traditionally fallen into two major categories: centrally acting anorexiant medications and peripherally acting medications, such a

Pharmacotherapy of obesity: an update.

There has been an epidemic of obesity in the last decade. In spite of the rising numbers of people who are overweight and obese, medical treatment of obesity is currently where medical treatment of hypertension was in the 1950s with only two Food and Drug Administration-approved medications for chronic weight loss and maintenance, sibutramine and orlistat. This article reviews these medications and others currently being used for weight loss and weight maintenance. Available medications for obesity include drugs that affect caloric intake and appetite and alter energy expenditure and nutrient
