OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between apical root resorption and orthodontic tooth movement in growing subjects.
METHODS: 58 growing subjects were collected randomly into the study sample and another 40 non-treated cases were used as control. The apical resoption of the upper central incisors was measured on periapical film and the incisor displacement was measured on lateral cephalogram. Using multiple linear regression analysis to examine the relationship between root resoption and the displacement of the upper incisor apex in each of four direction (retraction, advancement, in

Orthodontics is the planned movement of teeth that can be carried thanks to the provoked resorption and apposition of osseous tissue. From the standpoint of the periodontium orthodontists should always be cognizant of the risk of iatrogenically weakening soft tissue status but at the same time they should consider that an improved character of the periodontium is one of the benefits that can be derived from mechano-therapy. These periodontal improvements, in the broadest sense of the term, can result from traditional overall therapy as well as treatment aimed solely at a local condition requir

Here, we present the multidisciplinary, patient-specific management of a patient with severe external root resorption and bone loss in a maxillary anterior tooth. The tooth was provisionally noninvasively restored with glass ionomer subgingival matrix in preparation for forced orthodontic extrusion, papillary preservation, and implant placement. This approach enables clinicians to control infection within and around the resorbed tooth and then to use it as an anchor for slow forced tooth eruption to correct bone and mucogingival deformities. Aesthetic and functional outcomes were clinically an…

INTRODUCTION: The impaction of permanent teeth poses a challenge to orthodontists, especially when posterior teeth are involved. Multiple impacted posterior teeth without associated with systemic conditions/syndromes is an uncommon clinical occurrence which leads to a posterior open bite and severely compromised function.
AIM: The present article reports the clinical management of an impacted maxillary second premolar, mandibular premolars and mandibular first and second molars on the right side.
METHOD: The premolars were guided into occlusion by orthodontic traction. Disimpaction and uprig

Orthodontic treatment can cause resorptions on teeth. Factors causing resorptions are forces and moments. Other factors that cause resorptions are less influenced by an orthodontic treatment. By carrying out experiments and finite element calculations, it was possible to demonstrate that forces and moments will produce stress in certain parts of the periodontal ligament and the root. This stress reaches or exceeds the blood pressure in some areas. To avoid high pressure in those areas, new treatment devices were constructed consisting of NiTi wires or a combination of NiTi and stainless steel.

Abnormal extrusion of canine teeth is often noted in middle-aged and geriatric domestic cats. The same age group of cats also is commonly affected by tooth resorption (TR). This study explored the relationship between these two phenomena of unknown etiology. Using digital radiography, the distance between the alveolar margin (AM) and cementoenamel junction (CEJ), referred to as the AM-CEJ distance, was measured in clinically and radiographically healthy maxillary canine teeth of 24 TR-affected and 29 TR-free cats. The mean AM-CEJ distance of maxillary canine teeth of cats with and cats without

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the periodontal variables of impacted maxillary canines that were treated with a combined surgical and orthodontic approach aimed at reproducing the physiologic eruption pattern of canines. Twenty-five patients who presented with unilateral impacted maxillary canines were consecutively enrolled (age range, 13.2 to 23.2 years). They were treated with a surgical flap and orthodontic traction directed to the center of the crest and were evaluated periodontally at the end of treatment and again at a follow-up visit (2 to 5 years posttreatment). BACKGROUND: Postoperative stability is a significant problem in the orthognathic management of anterior open bite malocclusion. The general tendency of modern preadjusted fixed appliances is towards unwanted and unplanned extrusion of the maxillary incisor and canine teeth as the dental arch is levelling. Following surgical repositioning of the jaws, the relapse potential of the extruded anterior dentition will be to intrude, leading to some reopening of the surgically corrected anterior open bite.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Forced eruption is a prosthodontic procedure that enables the treatment of otherwise problematic restorative conditions. During the vertical orthodontic movement, the root may be moved laterally, affecting the position of a tooth in the arch.
PURPOSE: This study quantified the degree of lateral movement possible during the eruptive procedure and addressed the significance of this movement from a theoretical and clinical standpoint.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A patient treatment, which demonstrated the movement in a single direction on the buccolingual axis, was isolated. On

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic traction of impacted maxillary canines remains a clinical challenge, particularly when the tooth is severely angulated. Conventional force application to the crown may increase the risk of damage to adjacent roots due to insufficient control of root positioning. This case demonstrates the use of a boot loop in combination with a micro-screw to upright the canine root within the alveolar bone before potential root contact. Treatment alternatives and biomechanics are discussed to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach.Diagnosis and treatment plan:A boy aged 14 ye

Orthodontic treatment is planned on an individual, case-by-case basis after thoroughly considering the patient's overall facial and dental characteristics, the expected duration of treatment, costs, patient preferences, and the orthodontist's experience. This article reports the treatment of a patient with a maxillary premolar-molar transposition in the permanent dentition that was successfully managed with orthodontic treatment. A girl, aged 10 years 2 months, came for treatment with an ectopic maxillary left premolar. Radiographic analysis indicated a developing complete transposition of the

This report reviews the literature concerning the periodontal considerations involved in nonextraction management of impacted teeth. Further, it describes the clinical and radiographic features of periodontal tissue response to an 18-mm extrusion and 160 degree simultaneous rotation of a horizontally impacted maxillary central incisor in a 22-year-old female patient. Following surgical exposure of the unerupted incisor, an elastic thread traction was used to orthodontically move the tooth to the line of occlusion. Posttreatment evaluation of the periodontal and gingival response to a tooth mov

A case with a dilacerated maxillary permanent central incisor, treated with forced eruption technique is illustrated and the results of the 4-year follow up are presented. After the successful eruption of the tooth, the root development was completed and the root canal was obliterated. The 4-year follow-up results revealed the tooth to be still functional and the radiographic evaluation showed that the periodontal and periapical tissues were intact and healthy. In conclusion, the impacted dilacerated incisor diagnosed in the early mixed dentition should be treated with the aid of orthodontic t
