Targeting the immune-metabolic axis reverses orthodontics-induced systemic pathology.

Orthodontic treatment corrects various craniofacial malformations primarily through triggering active alveolar bone remodeling, however the potential impacts of this intervention on the systemic immune state have long been insufficiently explored. Here, we show that mechanical force applied during orthodontic treatment can trigger systemic inflammation dominated by adaptive immune responses. This response not only impairs bone repair at distant body sites but also causes temporary liver dysfunction resembling autoimmune conditions characterized by the expansion of CD69⁺ B cells. Coronally advanced flap-assisted surgically facilitated orthodontics: A technical note.

BACKGROUND: In situations where orthodontic tooth movement is expected to exceed the preexisting alveolar envelope, surgically facilitated orthodontic therapy (SFOT) has been advocated to expand the alveolar housing and reduce periodontal risks. However, detailed descriptions of soft-tissue management during SFOT remain limited. METHODS: This technical note describes a surgical protocol incorporating a coronally advanced flap (CAF) within a segmental SFOT approach and illustrates its clinical application in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment requiring simultaneous periodontal phenotype

Orthodontics meets otorhinolaryngology: a collaborative approach to otitis media prevention.

AIM: To evaluate the role of orthodontic and craniofacial orthopaedic interventions in the prevention and management of otitis media with effusion (OME), focusing particularly on rapid maxillary expansion (RME) and its implications for Eustachian tube function. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science using a structured combination of MeSH terms by two expert researchers from inception to December 2024. Randomised and non-randomised prospective studies involving pediatric patients (2-18 years) with chronic OME were included. The effectiveness of prev

Objective Assessment of Bone Age in Orthodontics: A Scoping Review.

Estimation of skeletal maturation using radiographs is often used in clinical orthodontics as it is one the crucial factors in achieving a successful treatment outcome. In Orthodontics, we commonly use hand wrist radiographs, lateral cephalograms and sometimes orthopantomogram (OPG) as an objective diagnostic evaluation into the skeletal maturity of an individual. However, the techniques employed are subjective and account for inter-operator errors. With the advent of technology objective methods have been developed and documented in literature but have not gained much importance yet. This art…

Assessment of AI Models in Predicting Treatment Outcomes in Orthodontics.

BACKGROUND: In the realm of orthodontics, the evaluation of treatment outcomes is a pivotal aspect. In recent times, artificial intelligence (AI) models have garnered attention as potential tools for predicting these outcomes. These AI models have the potential to enhance treatment planning and decision-making processes. However, a comprehensive assessment of their effectiveness and accuracy is essential before their widespread integration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we assessed the capability of AI models to predict treatment outcomes in orthodontics. A sample of 30 patients under…

Robotic Archwire Bending in Orthodontics: A Review of the Literature.

Malocclusion is a widespread oral health issue that adversely affects individuals' health and well-being. Currently, fixed orthodontics is considered the most efficient treatment for correcting malocclusion, with archwire bending playing a key role in orthodontic treatment. Traditionally, orthodontists manually performed archwire bending using various handheld pliers and other mechanical tools, requiring a significant amount of time, precision, and specialized training yet being unable to guarantee appliance accuracy. The process of shaping orthodontic wire is challenging due to its high stiff…

[Temporomandibular Disorders and Orthodontics: how to conduct a screening examination?].

INTRODUCTION: Common Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) involve the masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joints, and/or their associated structures. Clinical manifestations can vary, including sounds (cracking, crepitus), pain, and/or dyskinesias, often corresponding to a limitation of mandibular movements. Signs or symptoms of muscular or joint disorders of the masticatory system may be present before the initiation of orthodontic treatment, emerge during treatment, or worsen to the point of stopping treatment. How do you screen for common TMD in orthodontic treatment? MATERIALS AND METHODS

Periodontal phenotype modification in surgically facilitated orthodontics: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic treatment in adults with thin periodontal phenotype presents challenges such as lengthy treatment time and increased risk for gingival recessions. In this case, surgically facilitated orthodontic treatment (SFOT) was proposed to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement while modifying the periodontal phenotype. METHODS: An orthodontic patient was referred for periodontal evaluation of lower anterior teeth, which presented a thin gingival phenotype and bone dehiscence. SFOT was performed on the mandible using particulate allograft combined with platelet rich fibrin (PRF) a

White Spots: Prevention in Orthodontics-Systematic Review of the Literature.

Early-stage dental demineralization, called white spots (WS), get their name from the characteristic colour that enamel takes on due to the acid attack of salivary cariogenic bacteria. They are often associated with fixed orthodontic therapy (FOT) and, if left untreated, evolve into caries with repercussions on oral health and dental aesthetics. This review aims to identify the most effective prophylaxis strategies to prevent WS during FOT. The search for the reviewed studies was conducted on the Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, selecting English-only articles published in the 5 y
