BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the correlation between orthodontic malocclusion and parafunctional habits, including atypical swallowing, mouth breathing and drooling, in children with cerebral palsy (CP).
METHODS: Fifty-one children with CP (ages 6-14) from the Spastic Children Foundation were assessed. Drooling, lip incompetence and malocclusion were evaluated using the Balasco and Ballard methods, Angle Classification and WHO standards. Soft tissue relations, facial type, profile and face ratios were examined via extraoral assessment and photo analysis. Fisher's exact test was

INTRODUCTION: The objectives of this study were to compare the amounts of apical root resorption that occur after treatment with 2 removable appliances-the Fränkel function regulator and the eruption guidance appliance (EGA)-in an untreated control group, and to determine the prevalence of root resorption in the maxillary and mandibular incisors and the dental arches.
METHODS: After treatment, periapical radiographs were obtained of the maxillary and mandibular incisors with the long-cone paralleling technique from 72 patients divided into 3 groups. Group 1 included 24 patients treated with t

The goal of early treatment of Class III malocclusion isfocused on providing a more favourable environment for normal growth and on improving the psychosocial development of the child by improving the facial appearance. Rapid palatal expansion with maxillary protraction and face mask has provided a predictable and effective approach to managing the treatment. We are presenting a case report of a growing Class III treated using maxillary protraction therapy, (Rapid maxillary expansion using bonded RME appliance, to loosen the nasomaxillary sutures and Petit face mask with bonded occlusal splint

Gingival recession is a frequent mucogingival defect in the adult population. It affects the esthetics and is related to hypersensitivity and a high risk of periodontal attachment loss. The connection between orthodontic treatment and periodontal health has been debated for a long time. A healthy periodontium can be preserved during safe orthodontic tooth movement even in patients with poor mucogingival anatomy. This article aimed to review the strategies around managing the risks of mucogingival and apical root changes owing to maxillary canine impaction, with a special focus on gingival rece

The aim of this paper was to provide a literature review about the problems that can occur during orthodontic treatment. Using the PubMed database we collected items that would provide information regarding the direct consequences of the placement of an orthodontic appliance: coming to the discussion of the following topics: candida infections, the effects on the soft tissues, the effects on periodontal tissues and effects on hard tissues. The presence of appliances in the oral cavity increases the prevalence of people with candida, specifically the species Candida Albicans is the most frequen

OBJECTIVE: Canine impaction is a dental anomaly involving intraosseous displacement of the unerupted tooth. This situation is of significant importance causing orthodontic, surgical and interceptive problems. Trauma in the incisor area is a possible cause of the displacement of the tooth bud of the permanent canine resulting in the deviated eruption path. The aim of this article is to present two clinical cases with diagnosis of maxillary canine displacement and impaction in the incisor region after a traumatic injury during childhood, discussing treatment possibilities and outcomes achieved a

Malocclusion can result in temporomandibular joint dysfunction, impaired speech, impaired mastication, aberrant craniofacial development and psychosocial difficulties. Therefore, it is of interest to assess early malocclusion in 50 children ages 6 to 12. Children were monitored every 6-8 weeks and received preventive, interceptive, or observational care based on joint assessments. The findings revealed a 78% improvement in occlusion, along with high parental satisfaction (92%) and compliance (88%). A statistically significant improvement was noted (p < 0.05). Thus, cooperative early interventi

AIM AND BACKGROUND: The applications of artificial intelligence (AI) are escalating in all frontiers, specifically healthcare. It constitutes the umbrella term for a number of technologies that enable machines to independently solve problems they have not been programmed to address. With its aid, patient management, diagnostics, treatment planning, and interventions can be significantly improved. The aim of this review is to analyze the current data to assess the applications of artificial intelligence in pediatric dentistry and determine their clinical effectiveness.

Planas' approach to the management of a distocclusion, as applied by Simoes, is analyzed physiologically by taking into account the Petrovic-Stutzmann's cybernetic vision of facial growth. This scientifically based theorization further strengthens the clinical validity of this orthodontic ideology and procedure. The clinician, the orthodontist, the functional orthopedist or the functional orthodontist are fundamentally dependent on their knowledge about biophysics, biochemistry and mainly physiology. It is important then that they be acquainted with fundamental concepts of basic sciences as ap

In the mixed dentition, the goal of orthodontic treatment is to maintain or improve arch integrity for the eruption of the permanent teeth, and to prevent the development of a more complicated malocclusion. The importance of correct diagnosis prior to the treatment of mixed-dentition patients cannot be over emphasized. An understanding of the mixed dentition's normal development allows clinicians to determine if the occlusion is developing outside of the normal range. Appropriate treatment can only be planned after this determination has been made. Once it is concluded that orthodontic treatme

A child affected by lack of eruption of the upper right primary cuspid from the presence of a compound odontoma was followed from 3 to 13 years of age. The early removal of the obstacle to eruption and the correct control of the case evolution allowed for a satisfactory alignment of the permanent teeth by means of minimal therapeutical intervention.

The natural mechanisms of eruption, mesial migration, soft tissue pressure and occlusal forces can be used by the dentist to treat malocclusion in the growing child. The author describes how planned extractions of deciduous and permanent teeth can be employed to resolve crowding, promote spontaneous alignment, and avoid centreline displacement.
