Periodontically accelerated orthodontic tooth movement: A narrative review.

Adult orthodontics has gained widespread acceptance recently with the introduction of more esthetic options for the patient. The major deterrent that remains is the prolonged treatment time associated with comprehensive orthodontic treatment. The objective of this paper is to present a review of techniques, which could be employed by the orthodontist in conjunction with a periodontist to enhance the rate of orthodontic tooth movement. The biological rationale and clinical manipulation have been discussed with a brief review of the current literature about these techniques. The interdisciplinar

Unilateral delayed eruption of a mandibular permanent canine and the maxillary first and second molars, and agenesis of the maxillary third molar.

Delayed tooth eruption can affect the accuracy of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning and could delay overall treatment. A girl, aged 7 years 4 months, who had unilateral delayed eruption of several teeth was successfully treated. The evaluation of delayed tooth eruption should be considered by the orthodontist because the role of these teeth can affect the overall treatment of malocclusion. In patients with delayed tooth eruption, careful and accurate diagnosis and treatment planning will allow the orthodontist to start treatment at the proper stage and might reduce the overall ortho

Orthodontic Treatment of Patients With Clefts: Satisfaction and Psychological Aspects.

To assess parents' satisfaction with cleft child's facial appearance and function; compare these findings with orthodontist (expert) satisfaction and evaluate influence of various factors on satisfaction. Cross-sectional study. Sixty-three parents of non-syndromic patients with clefts (ages 7-20 years), and an orthodontist, completed the Cleft Hearing, Appearance and Speech Questionnaire. Two scores were produced: cleft-associated, and non-cleft-associated features. Additional open questions were presented to the parents. Both parents and orthodontist gave high satisfaction scores (mean: 8.4 &

[Multidisciplinary sequential treatment for obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome and malocclusion in children].

With the high incidence of chronic rhinitis, mouth breathing is becoming the hot topic in orthodontics. The incidence of obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) with malocclusion in children is also increasing. Dentofacial deformities such as maxillary constriction and mandibular retrognathia may be the primary cause of OSAHS, or they may be complications caused by chronic mouth breathing. Orthodontic treatment is of great significance in relieving obstructive sleep apnea and hypopnea. More attention should be paid by orthodontists to sleep disordered breathing. Orthodontists should …

The molar extraction debate.

Recent reports of conflict between dentists and orthodontists over the extraction of second molar teeth prior to orthodontic treatment raise a number of questions; one of which is: not whether or not to extract, but which teeth to extract. So that this controversial topic may be debated further, the Editor of this Journal has sought contributions from several quarters. Dr Harry Orton of the United Kingdom has written and lectured widely on this subject and recently lectured to the Western Australian Branch of the Australian Society of Orthodontists; his lecture has been summarised by Dr John S…

Orthognathic and TMJ surgery: postsurgical patient management.

Postsurgical patient management is a critical factor for high-quality patient treatment and predictable outcomes in orthognathic and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery. Lack of understanding of proper patient management on the part of the surgeon and orthodontist can result in compromised or even disastrous results. Surgeons and orthodontists must have the knowledge and ability to implement postsurgical management protocols and strategies to provide the best care and outcomes possible for their orthognathic and TMJ surgery patients. Information is presented here in reference to postsurgical…

Association between crowding estimation and extraction recommendations in orthodontics.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about how precisely orthodontists in the United States (US) assess crowding or at what range of crowding they recommend extraction. This study aimed to assess the relationship between estimated crowding in patients with a Class I relationship and extraction recommendation by orthodontists in the US. The secondary aims were to evaluate the accuracy and precision of clinician estimations and determine if clinician background traits play a role in extraction decision-making. METHODS: An electronic survey was prepared using 4 patients with a Class I relationship with…

How has our interest in the airway changed over 100 years?

Since the beginning of our specialty, our understanding of the link between function and facial growth and development has progressively improved. Today, we know that children with sleep-related breathing problems will often develop distinctive facial characteristics. In adults, sleep apnea can result in serious morbidity and mortality. Orthodontists can ask sleep-related questions in the health history to help identify sleep breathing disorders. Treating these patients presents unique opportunities for orthodontists to collaborate with other medical specialties to improve a patient's health a…

Impacted teeth: Their place is in the dental arch.

The starting point for the treatment of unerupted teeth should consider the fact that, biologically, the pericoronal follicle maintains the ability to release EGF and other mediators responsible for eruption over time. The eruptive events may be guided and directed, so that teeth may occupy the space prepared to receive them in the dental arch, as showed in the case presented to evidence the following principle to be considered in these cases: "Regardless of the position of an unerupted tooth, it may be biologically directed to its place in the dental arch. The orthodontist should apply a mech
