BACKGROUND: Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma is a rare minor salivary gland neoplasm. The treatment of choice is surgical resection with or without post-operative radiotherapy. This tumour often demonstrates a good prognosis.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma arising in the nasopharynx. A 27-year-old female presented with progressive hearing disturbance and tinnitus. On examination, an expansile mass was observed in her nasopharynx. Biopsy was performed and the pathology results returned as clear cell carcinoma.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Surgical resection was p

Necrotizing sialometaplasia is a benign, self-limiting, inflammatory process involving salivary glands, commonly associated with tissue ischemia. Clinically, necrotizing sialometaplasia is most often found in the hard palate as a deep ulcer with raised, indurated edges that can be indolent. This, as well as the histopathologic findings of necrotizing sialometaplasia, can be confused with those of a malignant neoplasm. We report a rare case of necrotizing sialometaplasia in the larynx, probably initiated by an underlying malignant process. We suggest an aggressive diagnostic approach, when necr

Cocaine abuse is associated with medical complications that depends on the route of administration. Intranasal "snorting" is associated with complications secondary to chronic irritation on the nasal mucosa. A case of long-standing intranasal cocaine abuse is presented with unusual complications: septal and palatal necrosis, osteolytic sinusitis and bilateral optic neuropathy. The CT scan demonstrated a soft-tissue mass in etmoid and sphenoidal sinus and orbits. The histopathologic examination revealed a nonspecific pattern of chronic inflammation with no evidence suggestive of infection, neop

Background/Objectives: Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) and clear cell odontogenic carcinoma (CCOC) are rare clear cell neoplasms with overlapping histopathological features. This study aimed to compare their clinicopathological characteristics, particularly in anatomically challenging sites such as the palate and maxilla. Methods: Three analyses were performed. First, an unpublished series of five HCCC and three CCOC cases was evaluated for diagnostic histopathological features. Second, a PRISMA-ScR-guided literature review of 58 HCCCs and 45 CCOCs restricted to tumours arising in intr

INTRODUCTION: The majority of surveys concerning oral pathology accessions have focused on specific pathological categories or particular age groups, and few studies have analysed the whole range of specimens submitted for histopathological examination. An analysis of all oral pathology submitted to the Department of Histopathology in Rizgary Teaching Hospital in Erbil, Iraq, during the 6-year period 2008-2013, was performed.
METHODS: Histopathology samples (excluding smears) from the maxillae, mandible, salivary glands, the lips and oral mucosa, the tongue, the hard and soft palate and uvula

This paper describes the surgical treatment of fourteen dogs with intranasal neoplasms. Affected dogs were from ten breeds and their average age was eight years. Clinical signs included unilateral nasal discharge epistaxis and sneezing; later there was deformity of the face and/or palate. Diagnosis of intra-nasal tumour was made by radiological examination and by exploratory rhinotomy. Surgical excision of the tumour mass was attempted in all cases. Histological examination of resected nasal tissue revealed five carcinomas, six sarcomas and three examples of benign polypoid hyperplasia of the

Objective: To evaluate the outcome of one-stage reconstruction of maxillary and orbital defects with modified temporalis muscle flap (TMF) following the removal of malignant neoplasms. Methods: In this retrospective study, 15 patients underwent the reconstruction of defects of orbital floor and palate after maxillectomy for malignant tumor were included from June 2008 to June 2014. The modified temporalis muscle flap was used to repair the defects after surgery, and functional outcomes were analyzed. Results: All the patients were followed up for 12-81 months. Three cases of them received preo

A perfect surgical approach to nasal cavity and paranasal sinus tumors should provide a broad exposition preserving the important structures with no cosmetic defect. Midfacial degloving (MD) technique provides good exposure without incisions and scars in the face. Classic MD technique includes rhinoplasty incisions. However, combination of the facial plastic skills of the rhinoplasty techniques with an oncologic approach limits its popularity. We modified the classic technique, which is performed without classic rhinoplasty incisions. The surgical approaches to 55 patients with benign and mali

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign neoplasm of the salivary glands, occurring in both major and minor glands, with a predilection for the intraoral palate. Its presentation in the upper lip is rare and, when large, may result in facial deformity, alveolar bone resorption, and tooth displacement, especially in long-standing lesions. Clinically, PA presents as a solid, painless, slow-growing, and well-circumscribed mass, which may cause functional morbidity depending on its size and location. The differential diagnosis includes canalicular adenoma, other benign minor salivary gla

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignant neoplasm of salivary gland origin, accounting for approximately 27% of all salivary gland malignancies. While it frequently involves the parotid gland, intraoral cases show a predilection for the palate. Rarely, MEC can arise within the facial skeleton, where it is the most common salivary gland tumor to occur intraosseously. Intraosseous MECs of the jaws are extremely rare and often present diagnostic challenges due to their clinical resemblance to more common jaw lesions. We present a rare case of intraosseous MEC in a 52-year-old m

Myofibroma (MF) is a benign spindle cell neoplasm rarely found in the oral cavity. It is common in males than females (2:1) and mostly seen to develop before 2 years of age with few cases reported in adults. This article reports a rare case of solitary MF of the hard palate in an 8-year-old female child; highlighting the clinical features, histopathology, differential diagnosis while emphasizing the importance of immunohistochemistry in establishing an accurate diagnosis and management of the same. The objective should be to differentiate benign versus malignant spindle cell lesions of smooth

Infantile myofibromas (IMs) are benign soft-tissue tumors of children. They are of fibroblastic-myofibroblastic origin and show considerable morphological overlap with other spindle cell neoplasms. Here, we present two cases of solitary myofibromas, one in a neonate and one in a 2-year-old girl. A 2-day-old girl presented with severe respiratory distress and died during intubation. At autopsy, a myofibroma involving the oropharynx with extension up to the larynx was noted. Second case was a 2-year-girl with a myofibroma in the hard palate. IM must be differentiated from other benign and malign

Myofibroma is a rare benign neoplasm occurring in the head and neck, arising primarily in infants and children. Frequently, myofibromas grow rapidly leading to suspicion of malignancy and the potential for overaggressive surgical excision. We aim to report a rare case of myofibroma with ulceration and bone destruction. A nine-year-old female presented with an ulcerated left hard palate mass. Open biopsy was performed with pathology suggestive of myofibroma. A left partial maxillectomy and reconstruction with a buccal advancement flap were performed. Final pathology confirmed the diagnosis of a

Hypertrophic Olivary Degeneration (HOD) is a rare neurological condition caused by trans-synaptic degeneration in the brainstem and cerebellum, resulting in varied clinical symptoms, classical being palatal tremors, along with characteristic imaging presentation. Large number of pathologic lesions can cause this condition, ranging from ischemic stroke to neoplasm. The most common conditions include hemorrhage, vascular malformations and infarct. Magnetic resonance scan (MRI) is the imaging modality of choice which shows signal changes with hypertrophy of the inferior olivary nucleus, as well a

Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) is a rare, low-grade salivary gland neoplasm with a predilection for the palate and tongue. A 63-year-old woman presented a 14×14×17-mm mass at the roof of the nasopharynx. Endoscopic resection was performed via a transnasal approach. Histopathological findings of the salivary gland tumor indicated hyalinization of the stroma and neoplastic cells with clear cytoplasm without mucin. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis revealed that the tumor cells were positive for EWSR1 rearrangement. We finally diagnosed this case as HCCC of the nasopharynx. EWS
