The objective of the study was a comparison of outcomes of K-wire vs plate fixation for distal radial fractures with regard to patients' quality of life. One hundred and two patients, 79 women and 23 men with displaced distal radial fractures, were non-randomly allocated for either K-wire (n=72) or palmar plate (n=30) fixation. In general, simpler fractures were fixed by pins, while plates were used for those that were more severe. No statistically significant differences were seen at 3- and 6-month follow-up assessment in any of the analyzed variables: wrist range of motion, total grip and ke…

PURPOSE: Fractures of the distal radius are among the most common injuries treated in hand surgery practice, and distal radius locking plates have become an increasingly popular method of fixation. Despite widespread use of this technology, it is unknown whether the subchondral placement of locking screws affects the loading profile of the distal radius. Our study was designed to determine whether subchondral locking screws change the articular contact pressures in the distal radius.
METHODS: Twelve cadaveric forearms underwent a previously described axial loading protocol in a materials test

BACKGROUND: This research sought to analyze a cohort of patients with extensor pollicis longus (EPL) ruptures after volar locked plating of a distal radius fracture (DRF) to characterize the incidence of ruptures that are unlikely to be related to dorsal screw prominence.
METHODS: This is a retrospective, observational, descriptive cohort study of adults with operative fixation of a closed DRF and an EPL rupture between 2002 and 2022. Eighteen patients with operative fixation using a volar plate of a closed DRF had an EPL rupture. The cohort consisted of 66% women with an average age of 57.5

The management of distal radius fractures has dramatically improved due to the development of a locking plate system. In addition, mini-invasive surgery has been performed in a lot of surgical fields in recent years. The aim of the present study is to investigate the possibility of fixation of a distal radius fracture with a volar locking plate through a 10 mm approach. Eighteen patients with distal radius fracture (mean age: 66 y; range, 28 to 88 y; 8 males and 10 females) were operated on using a volar locking plate. The incision for plating was always 10 mm long. The clinical, cosmetic, and

BACKGROUND: The effect of formal occupational therapy on recovery after open reduction and volar plate fixation of a fracture of the distal part of the radius is uncertain. We hypothesized that there would be no difference in wrist function and arm-specific disability six months after open reduction and volar plate fixation of a distal radial fracture between patients who receive formal occupational therapy and those with instructions for independent exercises.
METHODS: Ninety-four patients with an unstable distal radial fracture treated with open reduction and volar locking plate fixation we

OBJECTIVES: A meta-analysis to compare complication rates following volar or dorsal surgical fixation of distal radius fracture.
METHODS: A detailed search of PubMed®/MEDLINE® was undertaken to identify randomized and nonrandomized controlled trials published before 25 August 2012 that compared volar with dorsal fixation, in patients with distal radius fracture.
RESULTS: A quantitative meta-analysis of 12 trials (952 patients) was performed. There was no between-group difference in the overall rate of complications. Volar fixation was associated with significant increases in neuropathy (rela

PURPOSE: To determine whether use of the dorsal tangential view improves the diagnostic accuracy of intraoperative fluoroscopy compared with conventional views in detecting dorsal screw penetrations during volar distal radius plating.
METHODS: Dorsal cortices of 10 cadaveric distal radii were penetrated in each of the second, third, and fourth dorsal extensor compartments at 0, 1, 2, and 3 mm penetration. We obtained 4 standardized fluoroscopic images of the wrist: lateral, supination, pronation, and dorsal tangential views. Using high-definition digital images, 2 observers blinded to the exp

Total dislocation of the capitate is an extremely rare event. We report on one such unusual case. The complete expulsion of the capitate from its physiological position is difficult to diagnose. Standard parameters of the antero-posterior and lateral radiological do not head to a definite diagnosis. In our patient, the only real diagnostic tool was the clinical assessment and the Gilula arches alteration to the standard antero-posterior projection. In the period following trauma, the patient reported a very high level of pain in the wrist. Since this could not be correlated to the lesions that

INTRODUCTION: Distal radial fractures are one of the most common fractures that are presented to the emergency department (ed). The management of non-emergent cases often involves closed reduction and immobilisation before referral to orthopaedic services. Surgical intervention is offered based on the criteria for instability. This can be predicted from the initial and post-manipulation radiographs. The purpose of this study was to assess the role of various predictors of instability in the requirement for surgery, based on specific evidence-based criteria.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: We audited 87

BACKGROUND: Although distal radius fractures (DRFs) are clinically common, intra-articular DRFs accompanied by dorsally displaced free fragments are much less so. At present, it is very difficult to fix and stabilize the intra-articular distal radius fractures accompanying dorsally displaced free fragments with a plate. Our aim was to investigate the clinical effect of DRFs with distally displaced dorsal free mass treated with distal volaris radius (DVR) combined with turning of the radius via the distal palmar approach.
METHODS: From 2015 to 2019, 25 patients with intra-articular distal radi

Background and objectives Morphometric parameters such as radial inclination, palmar tilt, radial height, and ulnar variance exhibit considerable variations influenced by geographical, ethnic, racial, and individual factors. These parameters are pivotal in the context of distal radius fractures, distal radius plate design, and kinesiology. Understanding these variations is crucial for surgical precision and predicting complications. Methods This observational, retrospective study, conducted in a single hospital, aimed to determine the morphometric values of the distal end radius, specifically

There is no established standard treatment for post-operative infected nonunion distal radius fracture with severe damage to the joint surface. Herein, we report a case of post-operative infected nonunion distal radius fracture with severe articular damage, which was treated using a combination of the Darrach procedure and radioscapholunate fusion with a volar locking plate after implant removal and antibiotic treatment. A 61-year-old man underwent internal fixation with a volar locking plate for a distal radius fracture. Repeated post-operative infections caused distal radius nonunion, a bone

To investigate the differences in biomechanical performance between the Bailey bridge screw fixation system derived from truss units and the conventional volar locking plate-screw fixation system in the treatment of type C distal radius fractures, and to explore a simpler and minimally invasive internal fixation configuration. Based on the radial CT data of a healthy female volunteer, a finite element model of type C distal radius fracture was established, and the plate-screw group (PS group) and the Bailey bridge screw group (FMB group) were assembled respectively, with 2.7 mm screws adopted

OBJECTIFS: Consensual treatment of the Galeazzi's fracture is a plate osteosynthesis of the radius more or less associated to the confection of a plaster cast in distal radio-ulnar joint (DRUJ) dislocation. The authors are reporting in this study the clinical and functionnal results of the intra-medullary pinning of the radius in this type of fracture in adult.
METHODS: During a prospective study from January 2003 to December 2006, 23 patients (20 men and three women), average-aged of 32 years (16-70 years) presenting with a Galeazzi's fracture were treated by an intra-medullary pinning of th

BACKGROUND: The transition to volar locking plates for the treatment of distal radius fractures has improved patients' range of motion, reduced extensor tendon issues, and hastened return to activity compared to older fixation methods or nonoperative treatment. One drawback to volar plating is the potential for flexor tendon ruptures due to aberrant plate or screw placement. This study aims to describe the reconstruction options and patient outcomes after flexor tendon rupture due to volar plating.
METHODS: This is a single-institution, retrospective review of patients who presented with flex
