Effect of castration and cryptorchidism on fatty acid content of ovine adipose tissue.

Fatty acid analyses of perinephric and subcutaneous adipose tissue were made on 50 of Mehraban and Bakhriari breeds lambs to determine the effect of castration and cryptorchidism on ovine lipid composition. The level of stearic acid was significantly higher (p < 0·05) in cryptorchids than in wethers. Rams were also higher (p < 0·05) in the percentage of linoleic acid of the internal adipose tissue than wethers. The percentage of palmitic acid of subcutaneous tissue was higher (p < 0·05) in cryptorchid than rams. There was a tendency toward less saturated (palmitic and stearic) acids, but more

The pro-/anti-inflammatory effects of different fatty acids on visceral adipocytes are partially mediated by GPR120.

PURPOSE: This study examines whether G-protein coupled receptor 120 (GPR120) is involved in the pro-/anti-inflammatory effects of different types of fatty acids (FAs) in human visceral adipocytes, and whether these effects may be altered in obesity, a state with a chronic inflammation. METHODS: Pro-/anti-inflammatory effects of palmitic, oleic, linoleic and docosahexaenoic acids on human visceral adipocytes were tested in mature adipocytes from non-obese and morbidly obese (MO) subjects. Also, the effects of these FAs were tested when the GPR120 gene was silenced. RESULTS: In adipocytes from

Cells cultured with palmitic acid (C16:0) or the combination oleic/palmitic acids (2:1 ratio) also exhibited a dose-dependent increase of GSH; however palmitic-supplemented cultures did not sustain the GSH increase after 24h. We also detected an increase in the formation of lipid peroxides (LPO) indicating that the increase of GS …

Nutritive value of traditional sweets consumed in the Arab Gulf countries.

Proximate, mineral, fatty acid and cholesterol composition of eight traditional sweets commonly consumed in the Arab Gulf countries were determined. Four sweets were obtained from Bahrain, whereas the other sweets were obtained from Oman. Protein level ranged from 0.2 to 9.0%, while the fat content ranged from 7.9 to 18.0%. In general, the sweets were found to be high in energy content but poor in most minerals. Iron and zinc contents were low (less than 2 and less than 1 mg/100 g for iron and zinc, respectively). Cholesterol was high in four sweets (range from 10.6 to 20.4 mg/100 g), mainly b

Effect of fatty acids and their derivatives on mitochondrial structures.

Reye's Syndrome (RS) is characterized by encephalopathy, fatty degeneration of viscera and high levels of free fatty acids which are implicated in cellular toxicity. We have examined the effects of octanoic acid (C8:0), palmitic acid (C16:0) and oleic acid (C18:1) on rat liver mitochondrial swelling by spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Of the fatty acids tested oleic acid had a greater effect than palmitic acid while octanoic acid had no effect. Acyl-CoA derivatives produced greater mitochondrial swelling than either acyl-carnitine or free fatty acids. However, identical amounts of pal

Phospholipase activity in human bile.

To investigate the importance of bacterial infection in the formation of free fatty acids found in brown pigment gallstones, free fatty acids and phospholipase activity in hepatic bile, with or without the presence of bacterial infection, were compared. The concentration of free fatty acids in bile with bacterial infection [0.467 +/- 0.447 mg per ml (mean +/- S.D.)] was significantly higher than when bacterial infection was absent (0.073 +/- 0.041 mg per ml; p less than 0.01). However, there was no significant difference in the composition of free fatty acids in hepatic bile when bacterial inf

Phytochemical profiling and antioxidant potential of Phlomoides rotata essential oils.

The antioxidant properties and characteristic metabolites of Phlomoides rotata (P. rotata) essential oils (EOs) remain largely unexplored. To address this gap, we combined metabolomic profiling with in vitro antioxidant assays to systematically characterize EOs from P. rotata. Cryoprecipitation of EOs yielded two fractions: crystals (Crs) and crystal-free EOs (CEs). GC-MS identified 125 components (84.41-94.86%), including 94 first reports in P. rotata. Dominant constituents were long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs, 42.33-75.73%) and their esters (3.44-15.21%), notably palmitic acid (14.49-63.13%),

[The fatty acids of trichinellae].

The composition of fatty acids of lipids in the muscles of rats and larvae of Trichinella spiralis and T. nativa developing in them were studied. Both species are characterized by practically the same composition of fatty acids, only in the frost-resistant species T. nativa there was a sufficient amount (up to 3.5%) of docosapenta- and docosahexaenic acids (22:5 and 22:6). The comparison of the content of individual fatty acids in larvae and in muscles of the host by means of statistical correlation analysis suggests that larvae obtain a considerable portion of palmitic acid from the host and

(+)-Lipoic acid reduces mitochondrial unfolded protein response and attenuates oxidative stress and aging in an in vitro model of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a liver disorder characterized by the ac-cumulation of fat in hepatocytes without alcohol consumption. Mitochondrial dysfunction and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress play significant roles in NAFLD pathogenesis. The unfolded protein response in mitochondria (UPRmt) is an adaptive mechanism that aims to restore mitochondrial protein homeostasis and mitigate cellular stress. This study aimed to investigate the effects of ( +)-Lipoic acid (ALA) on UPRmt, inflammation, and oxidative stress in an in vitro model of NAFLD using HepG2 cells tre

Dual antitumor and neuroprotective activities of lipid ether amide hybrids in glioma cells and metabolically damaged neurons.

BACKGROUND: Lipid metabolism and signaling via multiple receptors strongly influences the development of brain tumors and affects neuronal vulnerability and damage. Oleic and palmitic acids are endogenous ligands for the nuclear receptor TLX and the constitutively active G-Protein coupled receptors GPR3 and GPR6. TLX is overexpressed in glioma stem/progenitor cells and promotes tumor development, while GPR3 and GPR6 support neuronal survival and integrity. To exploit these pathways therapeutically, we designed and tested fatty acid lipid amide hybrids (LEAs) linking oleic or palmitic acid to a…

Studies on the energy reserve of Fasciola gigantica (COBB.) from Nigerian zebu cattle. II. The fatty acid composition.

The fatty acids were studied of the total lipid extracts of mature liver flukes Fasciola gigantica from the bile ducts of Nigerian zebu cattle. The high content of saturated fatty acids, which amounted to more than 54% of the total fatty acids, conferred a high level of saturation on these parasites. This was brought about by a general increase in the values of palmitic acid. The results are discussed in connection with the parasite-host relationship.

Beyond the Scavenging of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS): Direct Effect of Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles in Reducing Fatty Acids Content in an In Vitro Model of Hepatocellular Steatosis.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by hepatic accumulation of lipids. Antisteatotic effects of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2NPs) have recently been shown in animal models of liver disease. However, it is unclear whether the activity of CeO2NPs is related solely to the decrease in oxidative stress or, in addition, they directly decrease liver fatty acid accumulation. To address this question, in this work, we used an in vitro model of hepatocellular steatosis, exposing HepG2 cells to oleic and palmitic acid. Cell uptake of CeO2NPs and their effect on oxidative stress a

Saturated phosphatidic acids induce mTORC1-driven integrated stress response contributing to glucolipotoxicity in hepatocytes.

Hepatic glucolipotoxicity, characterized by the synergistic detrimental effects of elevated glucose levels combined with excessive lipid accumulation in hepatocytes, plays a central role in the pathogenesis of various metabolic liver diseases. Despite recent advancements, the precise mechanisms underlying this process remain unclear. Using cultured AML12 and HepG2 cells exposed to excess palmitate, with and without high glucose, as an in vitro model, we aimed to elucidate the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying hepatic glucolipotoxicity. Our data showed that palmitate exposure induced

Different Serum Free Fatty Acid Profiles in NAFLD Subjects and Healthy Controls after Oral Fat Load.

BACKGROUND: Free fatty acid (FFA) metabolism can impact on metabolic conditions, such as obesity and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD … CONCLUSIONS: the higher serum levels of FFA in NAFLD subjects are mainly due to levels of oleic and palmitic acids which are the most abundant circulating free fatty acids. This is almost exactly corresponded with significant increases in linoleic acid. An imbalance in the n-3/n-6 fatty acids ratio could modulate postprandial responses with more pronounced effec …
