Small cell carcinoma share morphological and functional characteristics with normal Kulchitsky cells (K-cells) of the bronchial tree. This tumor is thought to reflect a neoplastic transformation of the pulmonary APUD cells because of the morphological similarities with K-cells, the association with paraneoplastic syndromes and the high incidence of ectopic hormone production. The peptide hormones produced and secreted by small cell carcinoma can be used as tumor markers to guide diagnosis and to monitor chemotherapy. They may be of particular value in following the course of a patient and in d

Cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT) and cancer-associated cachexia (CAC) are the most common comorbidities in patients with malignant diseases. Their development is modulated by several factors related to the patient, tumour and antineoplastic treatments. Intriguingly, they share a pro-inflammatory setting induced by cytokines released by cancer and host cells in the tumour microenvironment, which leads to metabolic and endocrine derangements across organ systems. The insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) axis, implicated in metabolism, tissue homeostasis, and tumourigenesis, may play a key role

BACKGROUND: Paraneoplastic cochleovestibulopathy (PCVP) is a rare, atypical neurological paraneoplastic syndrome of the nervous system that is often misdiagnosed and mistreated.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report two cases of middle-aged women who presented with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) as the initial symptom. Pure-tone audiometry (PTA) demonstrated bilateral hearing impairment, while brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) and cochlear electrograms were within normal limits. Otoacoustic emissions indicated bilateral cochlear dysfunction. Cranial imaging excluded intracranial

Ovarian germ cell tumors are reviewed with emphasis on recent developments. In the primitive germ cell tumor group the recently recognized subtypes of yolk sac tumor, the hepatoid and glandular variants are described. Hepatoid tumors, which resemble hepatocellular carcinomas, are usually admixed with other patterns of yolk sac neoplasia but when the hepatoid component predominates, distinction from metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma may be difficult. Glandular yolk sac tumors include those with a cribriform pattern as well as tumors that may be confused with endometrioid carcinoma. Within the

OBJECTIVE: Rapid-onset Obesity with Hypothalamic Dysfunction, Hypoventilation and Autonomic Dysregulation (ROHHAD), is a severe pediatric disorder of uncertain etiology resulting in hypothalamic dysfunction and frequent sudden death. Frequent co-occurrence of neuroblastic tumors have fueled suspicion of an autoimmune paraneoplastic neurological syndrome (PNS); however, specific anti-neural autoantibodies, a hallmark of PNS, have not been identified. Our objective is to determine if an autoimmune paraneoplastic etiology underlies ROHHAD.
METHODS: Immunoglobulin G (IgG) from pediatric ROHHAD pa

INTRODUCTION: TSH-secreting pituitary adenomas are rare pituitary functioning tumors accounting for less than 2% of the pituitary adenomas. The clinical feature consists of thyrotoxicosis occasionally associated to tumoral symptoms due to mass effect. The biochemical feature consists of elevated thyroid hormones levels and normal or high TSH concentrations. This disease is often wrongly diagnosed as Grave's disease, and the ablative therapy is frequently conducted prior to the diagnosis.
OBJECTIVE: To report two cases followed in the Neuroendocrine Unit of Hospital das Clínicas, Faculdade de

In the last 10 years, four children with adrenocortical tumors were treated in our hospital. Three of them had symptoms of adrenogenital virilizing syndrome, and another, nonfunctional, was found during a routine examination. A diagnosis of adrenocortical tumor was established given the symptoms, hormonal tests, and radiologic studies. Two of the tumors were located in the left side, and the histologic diagnosis was pleomorphic cortical adenoma; the ones that affected the right side were adenocarcinomas. All the patients were treated by surgery and none received chemotherapy. At both presurgic

The significance of the hormone calcitonin, ectopically produced, is evaluated as a tumour marker. Since 40 percent of an unselected sample of tumours is hypercalcitoninaemic, calcitonin may be useful as a tumour marker, though absence of specificity limits its diagnostic value.

Virilizing lipid cell ovarian hyperplasia occurred in a 24-year-old woman referred with secondary amenorrhea, hirsutism, and weight gain. Hormone analyses revealed abnormal androgen production shown in a suppression test to be autonomic and of ovarian origin. Ovarian vein catheterization revealed abnormally increased androgen levels in the left ovarian vein and in the caval vein where it was entered by the right ovarian vein. As the patient wanted to become pregnant, three-quarters of her ovarian tissue was resected. Menstruation and ovulation returned. Two years after the operation the patien

Modes of tumor cell interaction include autocrine stimulation, secretion of paracrine growth factors and inhibitors, as well as interaction with the tumor macroenvironment. This evolving concept in tumor pathobiology describes the interaction of a malignant tumor with its host as an extension and addition to its local interaction with tumor cells and surrounding nontransformed cells, the tumor microenvironment. Angiogenesis, which is considered part of the tumor microenvironment, also allows reciprocal interactions between cancer cells and other organs and systems. Well-known examples of tumor
