After a trip to tropical areas, diarrhea is frequent and is most often due to a parasite. Amebiasis is the principal cause of acute diarrhea. The other intestinal parasites cause chronic diarrhea, including in temperate countries; these include Giardia, Cryptosporidium, and Microsporidium species in immunocompromised patients. Helminthic diseases, either cosmopolitan (Ascaris, Enterobius, and Taenia) or tropical (hookworms, Strongyloides, and Schistosoma), cause diarrhea with blood hypereosinophilia. Diagnosis is based on the examination of stool. Treatment is rapid, effective and well tolerat…

Molecular techniques have dramatically advanced our knowledge of the mechanisms that regulate appetite and body weight, yet human obesity, a significant healthcare problem, still lacks an effective science-based treatment. Infectious agents, including worm parasites, seem capable of overwhelming these regulatory systems. Can the study of parasites extend our understanding of what makes animals feed?

Llamas in North America are infected with a number of helminth parasites, including: gastrointestinal nematodes, lungworms, meningeal worms, tapeworms, and flukes. Most of these helminths can be treated with the anthelmintic currently used to treat cattle and sheep. At least two protozoan parasites, coccidia and toxoplasma, have been reported in the llamas in North America. Coccidia can be controlled with the anticoccidial drugs used to control these organisms in other domestic animals. Toxoplasma has been reported uncommonly in llamas in North America and control is very difficult. Several ex…

This article reviews the biology, epidemiology, and clinical management of amebiasis, giardiasis, and cryptosporidiosis as well as the less common intestinal protozoa, Dientamoeba fragilis, Isospora belli, Balantidium coli, and Blastocystis hominis.

The role of parasites as etiologic agents in diarrhoea is emphasized. In countries of Western Europe, Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia are the most prevalent species, although some other 20 protozoans and helminths may lead to diarrhoeic disturbances. Parasitology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, diagnosis, and therapy are briefly outlined. The need for competence on the part of the personnel responsible for laboratory diagnosis is emphasized; also, newly developed immunodiagnostic methods may render appreciable services in doubtful cases. Adequate therapy yields successful results in o…

A study on 100 patients bearing high-localization intestinal parasitism associated to clinical manifestations compatible with an ulcerous syndrome is performed. The frequency of the parasites found is outlined, and Giardia lamblia comes first in the order of appearance. The different tests used to reach the diagnosis of this entity are assessed and emphasis in laid on the value of biliary drainage, both in the detection of parasites and the biliary sepsis that frequently accompanies them. In testing different therapeutic schemes, the value of metronidazole associated to tetracycline for intest…

The joint manifestations of parasitic diseases are rare. They may be due to the presence of a parasite within one or severed joints, to involvement of a neighbouring joint, or distant involvement due to an immuno-allergic mechanism. The latter category constitutes what one may call parasitic rheumatism. The latter is characterised by arthropathies of inflammatory type with raised sedimentation rate, marked but inconstant hypereosinophilia, and total inefficacy of antirheumatic treatments. The diagnosis of parasitic rheumatism depends on these criteria, on the diagnosis of the parasitic disease

Fifty-one parasitic cardiomyopathies studied for periods ranging from 1 to 14 years were analyzed. In 32 cases chagasic etiology was demonstrated and in 19 cases toxoplasmic etiology. In the chagasic cases the diagnosis was confirmed by serological study and/or xenodiagnosis. In one of these patients an aneurysmatic dilatation of the left ventricular cavity was found. The clinic picture showed cardiac insufficiency and deleterous arrhythmias in 18 of the 32 cases. The rest of the patients had precordial pains. The mortality of the group was 12.5%. In toxoplasmic patients the diagnosis was made
