Taxanes are a class of chemotherapeutic agents with common associated dermatologic adverse events, such as skin hyperpigmentation, hand-foot skin syndrome, paronychia and onycholysis. Taxane-induced scleroderma is rare. Few cases with skin findings resembling systemic sclerosis, have been reported after the administration of these agents. We report two cases with stage IV breast cancer, aged 66 and 71 years, who developed sclerodermic skin lesions in their extremities after starting treatment with placlitaxel and nabplaclitaxel respectively.

Nail involvement, which is distinctly uncommon in Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), is characterized by various features like longitudinal grooving, purpuric striae, hyperkeratosis, subungual pustules, deformity, loss of nail plate, paronychia, onycholysis, and pitting. Here the authors report the case of a child who presented with isolated nail unit changes due to Langerhans cell histiocytosis before the evolution of systemic features. The authors suggest that LCH should be considered in differential diagnoses of nail changes that are resistant to therapy.

Nail involvement in Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is very uncommon. We describe a 9-month-old boy with longitudinal purpuric bands, onychodystrophy, and paronychias on his fingernails and toenails, which antedated manifestations of recurrent bilateral spontaneous pneumothorax and elevated transaminases. The diagnosis of nail LCH was then confirmed by immunohistochemistry demonstrating positive S100 and CD1a staining in the epithelium of nail bed tissue. This case report affirms that nail involvement may be the initial manifestation of multisystem LCH and could portend an unfavorable prog

BACKGROUND: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors are an extensively utilized class of chemotherapeutic agents which form an integral component of treatment in solid organ malignancies such as non-small-cell lung carcinoma, pancreatic carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, and head and neck carcinoma. It has two subclasses: epidermal growth factor inhibitors (erlotinib) and monoclonal antibody (cetuximab). A wide array of cutaneous adverse effects has been attributed to this class of drugs, such as papulopustular eruptions, paronychia, xerosis, and changes in hair and nails.

Athletic activity may cause or aggravate skin disorders, which in turn may diminish athletic performance. Since many sporting activities necessitate prolonged exposure to the sun, athletes must avoid painful sunburn which will adversely affect their performance. Drugs and chemicals also may cause photoallergic and/or phototoxic reactions, including polymorphous light eruption and athletes should thus avoid photosensitising drugs and chemicals. The effects of chronic ultraviolet exposure include ageing, pigmentation and skin cancers. The most effective protection against excessive exposure to s

Retronychia is an inflammatory disorder typical of the great toes characterized by arrested nail growth, ingrowth of the nail plate into the proximal nail fold and paronychia. There is no standardized treatment for retronychia, and its management should be weighed based on the severity stage, treatment modality, and clinical outcome. In this paper, a systematic review of the literature was performed to assess all published data regarding the treatment of retronychia. A total of 231 patients from 24 studies were included in the analysis. Conservative management was adopted in mild-intermediate

Digital gangrene is not usually associated with primary Raynaud's phenomenon (RP). Its presence should therefore alert the healthcare provider to look for an alternative explanation. A 19-year-old female patient with primary RP developed digital gangrene following surgical management of acute paronychia. The possible mechanism in this patient appears to be the augmentation of the vasoconstrictive response due to the local infiltration of epinephrine mixed with lignocaine prior to the incision and drainage of her infected finger.

Superficial infections include paronychia, cellulitis and lymphangitis. Grave infections include felon, purulent tenosynovitis, thenar infections, septic arthritis and human bites. Treatment by incision and drainage, moist heat, elevation, splinting and specific antibiotics or other agents applies to most hand infections. When pus is found, adequate drainage usually gives good results. Without drainage, pressure necrosis and gangrene often follow. Rest for the infected part and for the patient is as important as any other facet of treatment.

Reported here is the first case of human acute infection with Tula virus, which occurred in a 12-year-old boy in Switzerland. This hantavirus had been considered apathogenic to humans, and in Switzerland only TULV-genome sequences have been demonstrated in wild rodents to date. In this case, paronychia, fever and exanthema occurred after the patient was bitten by a wild rodent, indicating an unusual route of hantavirus transmission. Thus, Tula virus infection should be taken into account in patients with appropriate clinical symptoms and contact with rodents.

Operations of the nail apparatus are done under sterile conditions and regional anaesthesia and in local anaemia. The knowledge of the complicated anatomy and physiology is the prerequisite for good surgical results. Nail extractions are commonly done too frequently. Subungual haematomas require a different treatment depending on the severity. Removal of the proximal third of the nail plate quickly clears acute paronychia resistent to antibiotics. The treatment of choice for the ingrown toenail is the surgical narrowing of the matrix. Kind and size of subungual tumours determine their surgical

Keratoacanthomas are rather common, rapid growing skin tumors, in which may occur as solitary lesions or in the form of multiple lesions. Multiple forms involve the palms of soles, and their source is unclear. On area where hair grows, these lesions originate from the infundibular areas. Many environmental and traumatic influences are implicated as potential etiologic factors. Keratoacanthomas should be differentiated clinically and histologically from squamous cell carcinomas, prurigo nodularis, and chronic paronychia. Treatment varies according to the type of lesions, but solitary lesions sh

A 25-year-old lady presented with painful periungual tumours which were associated with lytic changes of underlying terminal phalanges. She had been previously treated as a case of chronic paronychia but the problem recurred. She was subsequently diagnosed as a case of Incontinentia pigmenti which is a rare genodermatosis with mixed ectodermal and mesodermal polydysplasias, onchychodystrophy being a very rare manifestation. She was treated by excision of painful finger lesions, but there is no specific treatment for the underlying condition.

An 82-year-old female patient presented to our clinic with refractory nailbed ulceration accompanied by pain in her left fourth toe. Six months prior, she had undergone nail removal surgery to address a persistent paronychia that had not resolved for four months. Crust, necrotic tissue, and secretion on the nailbed were taken for microbiological examination, and Candida parapsilosis was discovered in culture. The authors first report one refractory nailbed ulceration caused by Candida parapsilosis after nail extraction.

This review focuses on nail changes that do not belong to the group of benign or malignant nail tumors. These common afflictions of the nail include structural changes in and under the nail plate as well as inflammation around and in the nail bed. They include onychomycoses, nail psoriasis, onychodystrophies, subungual hematoma, paronychia, ingrown nails and pincer nails. Due to the peculiar anatomy and physiological growth conditions of the nail, the pathology does not necessarily stem from the site of the clinical problem and calls for careful inspection and interpretation.

Dermatologic toxicities related to cancer therapies have become even more common with the use of targeted treatments. A proactive approach is necessary to reduce the pain and suffering these patients experience. The oncologist should become comfortable in preventing and managing these complications to keep patients on optimal drugs and doses. At the NCCN 20th Annual Conference, Dr. Mario E. Lacouture advised clinicians on appropriate strategies to manage rash, paronychia, alopecia, and other dermatologic conditions frequently seen in patients with cancer.

Congenital malalignment of the great toenails is the lateral deviation of the long axis of nail growth relative to the distal phalanx. The nails grow slowly, with thickening, curving, and transverse ridging. We describe a pair of 3-year-old monozygotic female twins with congenital malalignment of the great toenails complicated by ingrowing and paronychia. Although there are a few cases without any family history, congenital malalignment is believed to be inherited through an autosomal-dominant gene of variable expression. This report provides further evidence of the heritability of the disease

Three siblings having hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia are described. In addition to trichodysplasia, odonto- dysplasia and they had acanthosis nigrilcans of the, ano-genitat area and lesions suggestive of candida infection as evidenced by chronic paronychia in the finger and toe-nail folds, and maceration in the groins. The youngest brother also had a cutaneous horn in the sacral region. Eyes showed a small interpalpebral fissure, myopia, dull foveal reflex and a convergent squint. Parents were non consanguinous. There was no demonstrable cell mediated immune defect.

Retronychia is a form of post-traumatic ingrowing nail disease that involves proximal nail plate embedding into the proximal nail fold, with multiple generations of nail plate beneath the proximal nail. This disease is probably underdiagnosed because of incomplete clinical forms. The aim of this study was to report clinical and aetiological variants of retronychia and to evaluate their therapeutic outcome. A retrospective review was performed on 18 patients who were seen in our institution between 2007 and 2013. The diagnostic criteria for retronychia were paronychia and interruption of nail g
