Leiomyosarcoma of the parotid gland: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: A primary leiomyosarcoma of the parotid gland has been reported only three times in the English literature. This type of tumor represents an extremely rare group of salivary gland neoplasm. METHODS: A 44 year old man was initially seen with a 5 cm right parotid mass which was resected with a total parotidectomy, preserving the facial nerve. The patient had no palpable cervical lymph nodes. RESULTS: The majority of the specimen was made up of a relatively well demarcated tumor 5 cm in diameter. The tumor was noted to contain moderate to poorly differentiated primary leiomyosarcoma

Surgical treatment of parotid gland tumors.

Fifty patients (27 females, 23 males) operated on for parotid neoplasms are reported. Eleven patients (22%) had benign tumors, 31 (62%) mixed tumors and 8 (16%) malignant tumors. Among patients with benign neoplasms, 10 (90,9%) were treated by enucleation (En.) and 1 (9,1%) by superficial parotidectomy (S.P.). Twenty-five patients (80,6%) with mixed neoplasms were operated on by total conservative parotidectomy (T.C.P.), 3 (9,7%) by S.P. and 3 (9,7%) by En. Three cases (37,5%) of malignant neoplasms were treated by T.C.P., and 5 (62,5%) by total demolitive parotidectomy (T.D.P.), associated to…

The Youngest Case of Metachronous Bilateral Acinic Cell Carcinoma of the Parotid Gland: A Case Report and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is a low-grade malignant salivary neoplasm that represents 17% of all salivary gland malignancies. It has a tendency to affect young individuals, especially females. ACC mainly originates in the parotid gland and has a potential for recurrence and metastases. Rarely, ACC can affect both parotid glands in a single individual. A bilateral ACC of the parotid gland could either present as a synchronous or a metachronous tumor. Case Report. Our patient is a 19-year-old female known case of ACC of the right parotid gland. The tumor was resected in December 2

Large Parotid Gland Lipoblastoma in a Teenager.

BACKGROUND: Lipoblastomas are rare benign neoplasms that arise from fetal white fat cells. They are typically found in children under the age of 3 and have been reported in the mediastinum, extremities, and infrequently in the head and neck. We present a rare case of a lipoblastoma arising from the parotid gland and the first known report of a parotid lipoblastoma in a teenager. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old male presented with a painless, slowly enlarging parotid mass and left facial swelling. A fine needle aspiration was non-diagnostic and initial MRI showed a 3.8 cm × 5.0 cm × 4.0 cm fa

[Primary synovial sarcoma of the parotid gland].

INTRODUCTION: Synovial sarcoma is a malignant soft tissue neoplasm which occurs most of the time in teenagers and young adults. Facial, and especially parotid gland localization, is very uncommon. CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old male patient, with no prior history, was hospitalized for swelling in the left parotid area noted 5 months before. The mass was painful and there was no facial paralysis. A CT scan revealed a tumoral process of mixed density in the left parotid gland. The thorax and abdominal CT scan was normal. The patient was initially treated by surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy. He die

Primary lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid gland in a North African woman.

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the salivary glands is a rare neoplasm that is characterized by a non-neoplastic lymphocytic infiltration associated with an epithelial proliferation. It involves mainly the parotid gland. Racial and geographical factors contribute to the pathogenesis of this tumor. We report a case of a 70-year old woman from a non-endemic area who presented with several months history of swelling in the parotid region. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a parotid mass suggestive of a pleomorphic adenoma. The diagnosis of lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid gland was perform

Primary cutaneous versus salivary gland origin mucoepidermoid carcinoma.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is a malignant glandular epithelial neoplasm that most commonly arises in the major salivary glands. Primary cutaneous MEC is very rare. There is a particular diagnostic challenge in determining the primary site of MEC when it is found in skin overlying the parotid gland. Attention to a combination of morphologic findings may be helpful. However, differentiation of primary cutaneous MEC from secondary cutaneous involvement by a parotid MEC may be unnecessary once the parotid gland is infiltrated. We report the case of a 54-year-old male with a 2-cm asymptomatic m

[Tuberculosis of the parotid gland].

The different tumours of the parotid gland can be divided in benign or malignant tumours, regional inflammations and enlarged lymph nodes. We report on a 26-year-old male from Uganda with a slowly growing tumour of the right parotid gland for several months. The CT scan showed a poorly defined intraparotideal tumour. Ultrasonography revealed multiple enlarged cervical lymph nodes. Suspecting a neoplasm of the parotid gland we decided to perform a superficial parotidectomy for histological examination. The pathological analysis revealed a caseous necrosis and epitheloid granulomata containing L

Comprehensive Next Generation Sequencing Reveals that Purported Primary Squamous Cell Carcinomas of the Parotid Gland are Genetically Heterogeneous.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common malignancies involving the parotid gland, but it has been recognized that the vast majority of parotid SCC represents metastases, especially from the ipsilateral facial skin. Bona fide primary SCC of the parotid is so rare that it is unclear whether it truly exists at all. We sought to molecularly characterize cases diagnosed as primary parotid gland SCC to see if they possess a unique genetic makeup. We identified cases in our archives which had been diagnosed as primary SCC of the parotid gland. In all cases, metastatic disease was exclu

[Synovial sarcoma of the parotid gland: a case report].

Synovial sarcoma of the parotid gland is an extremely rare pathological entity, presenting as a particular form of synovial sarcoma of the cervicofacial region. This atypical localisation, linked to the absence of synovial tissue in this region, frequently complicates the differential diagnosis, notably with primary or secondary mesenchymal neoplasms and myoepitheliomas. We report the case of a 27-year-old patient presenting with a residual mass of the left parotid gland that appeared 6 years after exofacial parotidectomy for a confirmed synovial sarcoma. This work explores the clinical, patho

18F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET/Computed Tomography: Head and Neck Salivary Gland Tumors.

Salivary gland tumors (SGTs) are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms arising from the 3 pairs of major salivary glands (parotid, submandibular, and sublingual) or numerous minor salivary glands located throughout the oral cavity. This review discusses the role of PET/computed tomography (CT) in evaluation of SGTs, including staging, restaging, prognostication, and response assessment. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/CT is useful for staging and restaging malignant SGTs and offers important prognostic information in these patients. It is less useful for differentiating benign and malignant SGTs

Hemangiopericytoma of the parotid gland: a case report.

Hemangiopericytomas are uncommon neoplasms of vascular origin that mostly arise from extremities, retroperitoneum, and pelvic fossa. They are rarely found in the parotid gland. A 35-year-old female patient presented with a swelling in the right preauricular region. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy performed twice yielded an extraordinary amount of blood. A cytological diagnosis could not be made. Computed tomography showed a homogenous, well-shaped mass in the parotid gland. Superficial parotidectomy was performed. Histopathological diagnosis was made as hemangiopericytoma. No evidence for local

Treatment of parotid gland oncocytoma: a case report from a radiation oncologist's perspective.

BACKGROUND: Parotid oncocytoma is a rare benign neoplasm for which surgical excision remains the standard treatment. Although the recurrence rate is generally low, it increases significantly in cases with multifocal lesions or incomplete surgical excision. In such scenarios, postoperative radiotherapy (RT) has been shown to improve local control, reduce recurrence rates, and minimize the need for reoperation. This report presents a representative case of parotid oncocytoma, with a focused discussion on therapeutic decision-making from a radiation oncologist's perspective. CASE REPORT: We repo

Paediatric salivary gland epithelial neoplasms.

Salivary gland epithelial neoplasms in children are rare. Clinicians of all disciplines need to have a high level of suspicion when a non-inflammatory single mass lesion presents in the parotid or submandibular glands. There is high likelihood of malignancy when such a mass presents. Surgery is the primary treatment of choice in the majority of cases, with the addition of adjuvant radiotherapy +/- chemotherapy when the diagnosis is a high-grade tumour and/or when the malignancy presents as a large mass or is associated with local tissue invasion. Minor salivary gland neoplasms also present, th

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the parotid gland.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of salivary glands is a slow-growing malignant tumor, characterized by wide local infiltration, perineural spread, a propensity to local recurrence and late distant metastasis. Although ACC is the second most common malignant salivary gland neoplasm and constitutes approximately one-third of all salivary gland malignancies, it is relatively rare in parotid gland. Here, we present a case report of a cribriform type of ACC involving parotid salivary gland in a 66-year-old female.
