BACKGROUND: The rhytidectomy approach for parotidectomy allows the incision to be hidden, and post-operative scarring minimised. Furthermore, separate elevation of the Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System (SMAS) reduces the incidence of Frey's syndrome, and provides vascularized soft tissue for contour reconstruction. The technique has gained popularity particularly with plastic surgeons, but concerns persist that with this approach, particularly with lesions located anteriorly, access to the gland may be inadequate, and facial nerve identification may be compromised.

Parotid masses coincided with skin tumors in head and neck region may represent a serious diagnostic challenge. Conventional imaging modalities such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging may help to determine nature of the masses. Positron emission tomography - computed tomography imaging is reported to be useful for the detection of malignancy in the parotid gland. But in some situations all of them become insufficient. We present a case of cheek malignant melanoma with an incidentally discovered parotid mass during the investigation. We describe the problems experienced in the c

Tuberculosis being endemic in country like India can affect any organ though pulmonary tuberculosis is rampant and extrapulmonary is rare. Tuberculosis affecting parotid gland is a rare occurrence, usually unilateral. However, Mycobacterium tuberculosis causing cold abscess in bilateral parotid glands is even rarer. Here, we present a case of a young female presented with bilateral slow-growing swelling in the parotid region with evening raise of temperature for two months. On clinical examination, no signs of inflammation were seen. Ultrasonography showed thick-walled hypoechoic collection wi…

Parotid gland surgery can be challenging due to intricate relationship between the gland and facial nerve. Besides complete removal of the lesion, the main focus of surgery is centered on the facial nerve. Surgery can be technically demanding especially when the tumor is large or involves the deep lobe. We report a patient with a 30-year history of gigantic parotid mass, which initial fine-needle aspiration cytology reported as pleomorphic adenoma. The tumor, weighing 1.3 kg, was successfully resected with facial nerve preservation. Histopathological examination of the excised mass confirmed a

Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a rare congenital vascular anomaly involving abnormal artery-vein connections that bypass the capillary system. AVMs are particularly uncommon in young children. A 3-year-old girl presented with a painless, progressively enlarging left cheek swelling since birth. Clinical examination showed left facial asymmetry with a nontender, pulsatile mass in the left parotid region without skin changes or visible collateral vessels. Computed tomography angiography revealed an enhancing mass in the left parotid region with feeding and draining vessels. The patient was r…

INTRODUCTION: The true incidence of primary parotid squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is unknown and likely overestimated in the literature. The aim of this systematic review is to examine the diagnosis, aetiology and incidence of parotid SCC by analysing studies evaluating primary parotid SCC.
METHODS: A systematic search of Medline, EMBASE and Cochrane library was performed. A narrative synthesis was done.
RESULTS: A total of 14 observational retrospective studies on primary parotid SCC were included. There are currently no standard criteria for ascertainment of primary parotid SCC. Primary pa

Nonmalignant parotid masses in children can have protean etiologies ranging from infective parotitis to a benign neoplastic, vascular, or congenital origin. We review the 10-year experience of a tertiary care pediatric centre with respect to the surgical management of nonmalignant parotid masses. In total, 15 patients with nonmalignant masses of the parotid gland region underwent surgery. Five children were diagnosed with lymphoepithelial cyst or first branchial cleft cyst. Three children were diagnosed with parotid abscess, one of whom had atypical mycobacteria. Other diagnoses included lymph

In this study, the performance of machine learning in classifying parotid gland tumors based on diffusion-related features obtained from the parotid gland tumor, the peritumor parotid gland, and the contralateral parotid gland was evaluated. Seventy-eight patients participated in this study and underwent magnetic resonance diffusion-weighted imaging. Three regions of interest, including the parotid gland tumor, the peritumor parotid gland, and the contralateral parotid gland, were manually contoured for 92 tumors, including 20 malignant tumors (MTs), 42 Warthin tumors (WTs), and 30 pleomorphic

A case of Sjögren's syndrome with an unusual minor salivary gland swelling is reported. The patient was a 63-year-old female with a chief complaint of palatal swelling and dry mouth. Clinical examination revealed diffuse swelling of the hard palate and bilateral parotid regions, and sialographic examination of the parotid gland showed evidence of sialoangiectasia. Histopathological findings of the palatal and parotid lesions revealed intense lymphoid cell infiltration replacing the salivary gland parenchyma, and scattered epimyoepithelial islands throughout the lesions. Although it is well kno…

BACKGROUND: Regional recurrence remains a problem in the management of patients with metastatic malignant melanoma in the cervical lymph nodes and parotid. In this study, the influence of the number of positive nodes, extracapsular spread, and the use of adjuvant radiotherapy on regional control and survival were analyzed.
METHODS: A non-randomized, prospectively documented series of 143 patients with histologically positive nodes in the neck or parotid was analyzed. There were 152 dissected necks or parotids: 45 of these received postoperative radiotherapy, 6 x 5.5 Gy fractions over 3 weeks;

The head of a human cadaver was positioned in a Cranex TOME multifunctional unit (Orion Corporation Soredex, Helsinki, Finland) to measure the organ radiation doses after tomographic examinations of the upper and lower edentulous jaw bone. Five consecutive examinations were carried out in the upper and lower anterior jaw regions to cover the entire frontal area, 2 in the upper and lower left premolar regions, and 3 and 4 in the upper and lower left molar regions, respectively. Each examination consisted of 4 slices with a 2 mm slice thickness. Thermoluminescent dosimeter chips were placed in t

Salivary gland tumours are relatively uncommon but they present globally regardless of age. Most of these tumours are benign and involve the parotid gland. Though strictly confined to the parotid gland, Warthin's tumours can exceptionally present at an ectopic site of head and neck. Of particular significance is its striking similarity with a lymph node, an inclusion cyst, branchial cyst or a malignant mass, especially when it presents in the upper cervical region.

Toxoplasmosis is an ubiquitous protozoan infection, caused by the coccidian Toxoplasma gondii. It usually presents clinically with lymphadenopathy, mainly in the head and neck region. However, in the English literature, very scarce cases of intraparotid Toxoplasma exist, none having been diagnosed preoperatively. In this article, we present 2 cases of intraglandular parotid toxoplasmosis, one diagnosed postoperatively and the other preoperatively. We also review the relevant literature concerning Toxoplasma infection of the parotid gland.

Congenital agenesis of the parotid gland is a rare entity whose etiopathogenesis is still unclear. It is usually bilateral and is sometimes associated with other developmental anomalies of the head and neck region. A case is presented in which aplasia of the right parotid gland was associated with an omolateral angioma of the cheek. The radiological diagnostic approach and a review of the literature on agenesis of the salivary glands are presented.
