Paternal Parenting Styles and Filial Piety Toward Fathers Among Chinese Adolescents: The Roles of Conscientiousness and Moral Identity.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that caregivers' parenting styles are associated with children' filial piety toward parents. However, the underlying mechanisms linking parenting styles to filial piety toward parents remain largely unspecified. Additionally, prior research commonly classifies family parenting styles into positive parenting and negative parenting, neglecting the potential differential impacts and pathways of different types of paternal parenting styles on filial piety toward fathers. PURPOSE: Drawing on theoretical and empirical evidence, this study investigated

The Influence of Maternal and Paternal Race on Perinatal Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine associations between maternal-paternal racial pairings and adverse perinatal outcomes in the United States. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study using 2016-2023 U.S. birth certificate data from the CDC National Vital Statistics System. Singleton live births with complete data on maternal and paternal race were included. Parental race was categorized as non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, or Asian, resulting in 16 racial dyads. Outcomes included preterm birth (PTB, <37 weeks), hypertensive disorders of pre

Activating mutations in FGFR3 and HRAS reveal a shared genetic origin for congenital disorders and testicular tumors.

Genes mutated in congenital malformation syndromes are frequently implicated in oncogenesis, but the causative germline and somatic mutations occur in separate cells at different times of an organism's life. Here we unify these processes to a single cellular event for mutations arising in male germ cells that show a paternal age effect. Screening of 30 spermatocytic seminomas for oncogenic mutations in 17 genes identified 2 mutations in FGFR3 (both 1948A>G, encoding K650E, which causes thanatophoric dysplasia in the germline) and 5 mutations in HRAS. Massively parallel sequencing of sperm DNA …

Risk for Autism Across Generations.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has a complex inheritance pattern and is more common in males. Etiologic models suggest that most ASD risk is transmitted through common and rare de novo genetic variation. It has been hypothesized that rare variation could be inherited and therefore contribute to the overall risk burden in subsequent generations, especially through female lineage in disorders with male-skewed sex ratios. Here, we tested this hypothesis using multigeneration information on paternal age, because burden of de novo mutations has been linked to paternal age, and there is …

Sociodemographic Trends and Perinatal Outcomes in Fathers 50 Years and Older.

IMPORTANCE: The age of fathers at childbirth is rising, with an increasing number of births attributed to older fathers. While the impact of advanced paternal age has been documented, sociodemographic data about fathers aged 50 years and older remain scarce. OBJECTIVES: To explore sociodemographic and temporal trends among the oldest US fathers (age ≥50 years) and their associations with perinatal outcomes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included data from all US births from 2011 to 2022 using the National Vital Statistics System. Data were analyz…

The Effects of Parent Ages on Birth Defects.

BACKGROUND: Men and women, in the United States, are having children at considerably older ages. This changing demographic has been associated with multiple neonatal adverse birth outcomes that are currently considered to constitute a major public health crisis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk of parent age on birth defects and to provide results that can serve as a starting point for more specific mediation modeling. The modeling estimated the effects of parent age on birth defects controlling for confounding between maternal and paternal age and separated the mediating e…

Paternal pre-conceptional smoking and semen quality in the adult son.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests intergenerational effects of paternal pre-conceptional smoking through the germ line, but its specific impact on offspring semen quality remains uncertain because of challenges in isolating paternal exposure from maternal passive smoking or underreporting. METHODS: We reran previous analyses estimating differences in semen parameters and testicular size according to paternal smoking in 867 young adult men, adding first-trimester maternal plasma cotinine to the original adjustment for maternal self-reported smoking. We also estimated differences in sperm D

Advancing age increases sperm chromatin damage and impairs fertility in peroxiredoxin 6 null mice.

Due to socioeconomic factors, more couples are choosing to delay conception than ever. Increasing average maternal and paternal age in developed countries over the past 40 years has raised the question of how aging affects reproductive success of males and females. Since oxidative stress in the male reproductive tract increases with age, we investigated the impact of advanced paternal age on the integrity of sperm nucleus and reproductive success of males by using a Prdx6(-/-) mouse model. We compared sperm motility, cytoplasmic droplet retention sperm chromatin quality and reproductive outcom…

An epidemiologic study of paternity after cryptorchidism: initial results.

Paternity has been studied among married men who were formerly cryptorchid. Forty-one of 52 formerly unilateral cryptorchid men were married, 10 of 11 bilaterally cryptorchid and 36 of 42 control men. Thirty-two of the 41 of the unilateral group (78%) had fathered children, 6 of 10 in the bilateral group (60%) and 24 of 36 controls (67%). These limited data from the initial phase of this study of paternity after cryptorchidism do not show any correlation between paternity or time of unprotected intercourse to conception and age of surgery or pretreatment testicular size or location. However, t

Controlled ovarian hyperstimulation parameters are not associated with de novo chromosomal abnormality rates and clinical pregnancy outcomes in preimplantation genetic testing.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) parameters influence the incidence of de novo chromosomal abnormalities (> 4 Mb) in blastocysts and, thus, clinical pregnancy outcomes in preimplantation genetic testing (PGT). METHODS: Couples who underwent preimplantation genetic testing for structural chromosome rearrangements (PGT-SR) and monogenic disorders (PGT-M) were included in this study. The relationships of maternal age, paternal age, stimulation protocol, exogenous gonadotropin dosage, duration of stimulation, number of oocytes retrieved an…

Maternal and paternal depressive symptoms from pregnancy to late childhood in a UK-birth cohort: Reciprocal and bidirectional effects.

BACKGROUND: Evidence regarding the dynamics of the longitudinal reciprocal associations between maternal and paternal depression over time is lacking. The current study examines reciprocal longitudinal associations between maternal and paternal depressive symptoms (DS) from pregnancy (18 weeks-gestation) to 11 years 2 months (study child's age) to gain insights into the joint course of DS. METHODS: The study sample comprised 6296 mothers and fathers from the UK-based birth cohort, the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Reciprocal longitudinal associations between maternal and pa

Uniparental isodisomy of chromosome 14 in two cases: an abnormal child and a normal adult.

Uniparental disomy (UPD) of a number of different chromosomes has been found in associated with abnormal phenotypes. A growing body of evidence for an imprinting effect involving chromosome 14 has been accumulating. We report on a case of paternal UPD of chromosome 14 studied in late gestation due to polyhydramnios and a ventral wall hernia. A prenatal karyotype documented a balanced Robertsonian 14:14 translocation. The baby was born prematurely with hairy forehead, retrognathia, mild puckering of the lips and finger contractures. Hypotonia has persisted since birth and at age one year, a tra

Paternal Occupation and Delirium Risk in Older Adults: A Potential Marker of Early-Life Exposures.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Delirium is a common disorder among older adults following hospitalization or major surgery. Whereas many studies examine the risk of proximate exposures and comorbidities, little is known about pathways linking childhood exposures to later-life delirium. In this study, we explored the association between paternal occupation and delirium risk. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A prospective observational cohort study of 528 older adults undergoing elective surgery at two academic medical centers. Paternal occupation group (white collar vs. blue collar) served as our inde

Paternal anabolic-androgenic steroid exposure promotes autism-like behavior in adult mouse offspring of both sexes.

Paternal environmental factors before conception and during sperm development may influence the offspring's health later in life. This study aimed to investigate whether paternal exposure to anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) before conception predisposes mouse offspring to autism spectrum disorder (ASD)-like behavior. For this purpose, male Swiss mice were randomly divided into two groups: the control group received peanut oil, while the treated group was administered testosterone propionate (7.5 mg/kg, s.c.) twice a week for five weeks. After this period, these males were mated, and their of

Significance of genetic testing for paternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 6 in neonatal diabetes mellitus.

Two patients who presented at birth with neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM) are described: one with paternal uniparental disomy for chromosome 6 and one with normal, biparental inheritance. The first child presented with low birth weight, macroglossia, hypertelorism, and club foot in addition to NDM. In this patient hyperglycemia was transient, and insulin treatment was discontinued at 4 months of age. The second child also presented with low birth weight but was normal in appearance, and insulin dependence continues after 5 years. Genetic analysis with polymorphic DNA markers for chromosome 6 i
