Maternal and paternal anxiety levels through primary lip surgery.

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the anxiety levels of the parents of infants with cleft lip and palate (CLP) before and after primary lip surgery. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Forty mothers (mean ages: 31.9 ± 6.16 years) and 40 fathers (mean ages: 34.6 ± 5.91 years) of infants with CLP were included in this study. They were asked to answer the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) and Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) just 1 h before the primary lip surgery (T0) and 1 month after (T1) surgery. Student t-test and Mann-Whitney U test were used for int

Adverse birth outcome across the generations: the contribution of paternal factors.

PURPOSE: There is literature suggesting an intergenerational relationship between maternal and infant size for gestational age status and preterm birth, but much less is known about the contribution of paternal birth outcome to infant birth outcome. This study seeks to determine the association between paternal and infant small-for-gestational-age status (weight for gestational age < 10th percentile, SGA) and preterm birth (< 37 weeks gestation, PTB) in a large, diverse population-based sample in the United States. METHODS: Stratified and log-binomial multivariable regression analyses were co

Barring progress: The influence of paternal incarceration on families' neighborhood attainment.

A growing body of literature has recognized that incarceration has implications beyond the offender, with detrimental effects reverberating onto families. In this study, we use the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 3288) to investigate the relationships between paternal incarceration and the neighborhood outcomes of the children of incarcerated fathers and their mothers. Specifically, we examine whether children whose fathers are currently and/or have recently been incarcerated experience more residential instability, live in more socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods, an

The Impact of Paternal Alcohol Consumption on Offspring Brain and Behavioral Development.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) describe the wide array of long-lasting developmental abnormalities in offspring due to prenatal alcohol (ethanol [EtOH]) exposure via maternal gestational drinking. Although the teratogenic consequences of prenatal EtOH exposure, are apparent, the effects of preconception paternal EtOH exposure (PatEE) are still unclear. Previous research suggests that PatEE can induce molecular changes and abnormal behavior in the offspring. However, it is not known whether PatEE impacts the development of the neocortex and behavior in offspring as demonstr

The effects of tobacco consumption on paternity rates of adults with a history of cryptorchidism.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of tobacco consumption on paternity rates in men with a history of cryptorchidism. To compare the paternity rates between formerly unilateral, bilateral cryptorchid smokers, and nonsmokers. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of 153 men who had undergone orchiopexy between 1961 and 1985 at the Miguel Servet University Hospital (116 unilateral and 37 bilateral) and a control group of 100 men were evaluated by review of medical records and a questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 197 men filled the questionnaire (76.7%). There was no difference in paternity rat

Advanced paternal age, infertility, and reproductive risks: A review of the literature.

Advanced paternal age (APA) is associated with infertility and other reproductive risks. Studies looking at APA and outcomes have used different paternal age cut-offs, which has complicated systematic evaluations of reproductive risk associated with paternal aging. This review of the literature suggests that the impact of paternal aging on adverse reproductive outcomes is small, but significant. Studies suggest the incidence of paternal age effect disorders attributed to de novo autosomal dominant mutations is less than 0.5%. Other risks associated with APA include infertility, miscarriage, bi

Preconception Paternal Stress in Rats Alters Brain and Behavior in Offspring.

Whereas environmental challenges during gestation have been repeatedly shown to alter offspring brain architecture and behavior, exploration examining the consequences of paternal preconception experience on offspring outcome is limited. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of preconception paternal stress (PPS) on cerebral plasticity and behavior in the offspring. Several behavioral assays were performed on offspring between postnatal days 33 (P33) and 101 (P101). Following behavioral testing, the brains were harvested and dendritic morphology (dendritic complexity, length, and s

Effects of experimental light at night on extra-pair paternity in a songbird.

Light pollution is increasing worldwide and significantly affects animal behavior. In birds, these effects include advancement of morning activity and onset of dawn song, which may affect extra-pair paternity. Advanced dawn song of males may stimulate females to engage in extra-pair copulations, and the earlier activity onset may affect the males' mate guarding behavior. Earlier work showed an effect of light at night on extra-pair behavior, but this was in an area with other anthropogenic disturbances. Here, we present a two-year experimental study on effects of light at night on extra-pair p

Risk of Congenital Malformations in Children Born Before Paternal Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Increased risk of congenital malformations in children fathered by men treated for cancer might be due to mutagenicity of cancer therapies. Finding of increased malformation prevalence in offspring born before paternal cancer would indicate a treatment-independent mechanism. METHODS: Through national registries, we obtained data on singletons born in Sweden from 1994 to 2014 (n = 1 796 160) and their fathers and mothers (1 092 950/1 092 011). Men with cancer (n = 23 932) fathered 26 601 and 9926 children before and after cancer diagnosis, respectively. Associations between paterna

Fathers Count: The Impact of Paternal Risk Factors on Birth Outcomes.

Objective To determine the contribution of paternal factors to the risk of adverse birth outcomes. Methods This is a retrospective cross-sectional analysis using birth certificate data from 2004 to 2015 retrieved from the Finger Lakes Regional Perinatal Data System. Primiparous women with singleton pregnancies were analyzed in the study. Two multivariate logistic regression models were conducted to assess potential paternal risk factors including age, race/ethnicity, and education on four birth outcomes, including preterm birth (PTB), low birthweight (LBW), high birthweight (HBW), and small fo

Paternally expressed imprinted genes associate with hybridization barriers in Capsella.

Hybrid seed lethality is a widespread type of reproductive barrier among angiosperm taxa1,2 that contributes to species divergence by preventing gene flow between natural populations3,4. Besides its ecological importance, it is an important obstacle to plant breeding strategies 5 . Hybrid seed lethality is mostly due to a failure of the nourishing endosperm tissue, resulting in embryo arrest3,6,7. The cause of this failure is a parental dosage imbalance in the endosperm that can be a consequence of either differences in parental ploidy levels or differences in the 'effective ploidy', also know

Sperm as moderators of environmentally induced paternal effects in a livebearing fish.

Until recently, paternal effects-the influence of fathers on their offspring due to environmental factors rather than genes-were largely discarded or assumed to be confined to species exhibiting paternal care. It is now recognized that paternal effects can be transmitted through the ejaculate, but unambiguous evidence for them is scarce, because it is difficult to isolate effects operating via changes to the ejaculate from maternal effects driven by female mate assessment. Here, we use artificial insemination to disentangle mate assessment from fertilization in guppies, and show that paternal

Complete hydatidiform moles are composed of paternal chromosomes and maternal mitochondria.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and genomic DNA are produced in separate subcellular compartments. Human mtDNA is transmitted via maternal transmission in general. Complete hydatidiform moles (CHMs) represent major trophoblastic diseases that are cytogenetically exceptional because the chromosomal genomic DNA is derived only from sperm cells, making them strikingly different from normal concepti. However, few reports have described the mtDNA-transmission pattern in hydatidiform moles. To evaluate mtDNA transmission in androgenetic CHMs, we compared the sequences of hypervariable regions in 16 trios

Does early paternal involvement predict offspring developmental diagnoses?

BACKGROUND: A long line of research has illustrated that fathers play an important role in the development of their children. Few studies, however, have examined the impact of paternal involvement at the earliest stages of life on developmental diagnoses in childhood. AIMS: The present study extends this line of research by exploring the possibility that paternal involvement prenatally, postnatally, and at the time of birth may influence offspring risk for various diagnoses in childhood. STUDY DESIGN: A quasi-experimental, propensity score matching design was used to create treatment and con

Transgenerational inheritance of heart disorders caused by paternal bisphenol A exposure.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor used in manufacturing of plastic devices, resulting in an ubiquitous presence in the environment linked to human infertility, obesity or cardiovascular diseases. Both transcriptome and epigenome modifications lie behind these disorders that might be inherited transgenerationally when affecting germline. To assess potential effects of paternal exposure on offspring development, adult zebrafish males were exposed to BPA during spermatogenesis and mated with non-treated females. Results showed an increase in the rate of heart failures of progeny up to t

Paternal incarceration and child-reported behavioral functioning at age 9.

Within the last few decades our understanding of the importance of non-cognitive skills for socioeconomic success has grown along with our knowledge of the deleterious impacts of paternal incarceration for child wellbeing. Given the importance of early skills and that elementary-aged children constitute the majority of children with incarcerated parents, understanding the connection between paternal incarceration and the socio-emotional component of children's non-cognitive development is pressing. Using matching models, data from the newest wave of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Stu

Paternal and maternal psychological and physical aggression and children's anxiety in China.

The goal of this research was to examine the unique relationships between paternal and maternal psychological aggression (PA) and physical aggression (corporal punishment [CP] and severe physical abuse [SPA]) and children's anxiety in China. A total of 1,971 father-mother dyads completed the Chinese version of Parent-Child Conflict Tactics Scales (CTSPC) and the Chinese version of Spence Children's Anxiety Scale for Parents (SCAS-P). Results indicated that when paternal and maternal PA, CP, and SPA were considered simultaneously, parental PA and maternal CP were both significantly predictive o

Mosaic paternal genome-wide uniparental isodisomy with down syndrome.

We report on a 6-month-old girl with two apparent cell lines; one with trisomy 21, and the other with paternal genome-wide uniparental isodisomy (GWUPiD), identified using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) based microarray and microsatellite analysis of polymorphic loci. The patient has Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) due to paternal uniparental disomy (UPD) at chromosome location 11p15 (UPD 11p15), which was confirmed through methylation analysis. Hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia is present, which is associated with paternal UPD 11p15.5; and she likely has medullary nephrocalcinosis, which

Advanced Paternal Age and Risk of Musculoskeletal Congenital Anomalies in Offspring.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research suggests that advanced paternal age increases the risk of musculoskeletal congenital anomalies (CAs) in offspring, but findings are inconsistent. This study aims to investigate the risk of musculoskeletal CAs according to paternal age at birth in an unselected population covering cohort of children. STUDY DESIGN: A register-based prospective study of 1,605,885 children born in Denmark, 1978-2004, using information from record-linked health and administrative registers.
