Development and Validation of a Short Form of the Social Role Participation Questionnaire in Patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis.

OBJECTIVE: The Social Role Participation Questionnaire (SRPQ) assesses the influence of health on 11 specific roles and 1 general role along 4 dimensions. In this study, a shortened version of the SRPQ (s-SRPQ) was developed in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) to facilitate data collection in clinical studies and practice. METHODS: Using data from 246 patients with AS and population controls, the fit of each role to the different participation dimensions, the contribution of each role to the measurement precision, and the correlation between dimensions were evaluated using item respo

Social Role Participation in Patients With Ankylosing Spondylitis: A Cross-Sectional Comparison With Population Controls.

OBJECTIVE: Participation in social roles for persons with chronic disease is important for their quality of life, but interpretation of the data on participation is difficult in the absence of a benchmark. This study aimed to compare social role participation in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) to population controls using the Social Role Participation Questionnaire (SRPQ). METHODS: There were 246 AS patients and 510 population controls who completed the SRPQ, which assesses participation in 11 roles (with scores ranging 1-5) across 4 dimensions (importance, satisfaction with perform

Commitment strength, alcohol dependence and HealthCall participation: effects on drinking reduction in HIV patients.

BACKGROUND: The role of three factors in drinking outcome after brief intervention among heavily drinking HIV patients were investigated: strength of commitment to change drinking, alcohol dependence, and treatment type: brief Motivational Interview (MI) only, or MI plus HealthCall, a technological extension of brief intervention. METHODS: HIV primary care patients (N=139) who drank ≥4 drinks at least once in the 30 days before study entry participated in MI-only or MI+HealthCall in a randomized trial to reduce drinking. Patients were 95.0% minority; 23.0% female; 46.8% alcohol dependent; mea

The role of surgery in patients with advanced gynaecological cancers participating in phase I clinical trials.

OBJECTIVE: While gynaecological cancer patients who participate in Phase I clinical trials are not routinely considered for elective surgery because of a short life expectancy, this should not be overlooked in carefully selected responding patients. METHODS/RESULTS: We describe two cases of patients with different gynaecological cancers, who received treatment within separate phase I trials, and who then proceeded to surgical resection of their cancers, resulting in complete remission. CONCLUSION: Surgery, when feasible, should be taken into consideration as a potential management option, ev

Attributions for relatives' behavior and perceived criticism: studies with community participants and patients with anxiety disorders.

The relationship between perceived criticism from one's relative and attributions about that relative's behavior was examined in two studies. In Study 1, 50 community couples volunteered to participate in a study of marital interaction. Participants rated their interaction-specific perceived criticism after a 10-min problem-solving interaction and their attributions for their spouses' behavior during a review of the videotaped interaction. In Study 2, 70 outpatients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (n=41) or panic disorder with agoraphobia (n=29) completed a measure of global perceived criti

Diversity of participants in clinical trials in an academic medical center: the role of the 'Good Study Patient?'.

BACKGROUND: Only 2.5% of adults and even fewer minorities participate in cancer therapeutic trials. Researchers have concluded that many barriers to participation stem from how recruitment is performed by clinician investigators. The objective of the current research was to document specifically how these barriers impede recruitment in the clinical setting. METHODS: The authors conducted a case study of recruitment in an academic medical center using ethnographic research methods (direct observation of provider-patient interactions and in-depth interviews with providers) to collect data. Oral lesions in patients participating in an oral examination screening week at an urban dental school.

BACKGROUND: Dental education must emphasize early diagnosis and management of oral mucosal disease, including early detection of oral premalignant lesions and cancer. The authors evaluated clinical findings of oral screening examinations of dental patients during a one-week period in an urban dental school clinic. METHODS: Third- and fourth-year dental students conducted clinical screening examinations for all dental patients of record seen during the Yul Brynner Foundation's Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week in April 2006. RESULTS: Of 262 patients, 100 (38.2 percent) reported that t

Successful listing of patients for liver transplant was related to participation of referring doctor in the transplant program.

INTRODUCTION: Experience with liver transplantation is limited in many parts of Asia. Therefore, patients from nontransplant centers may not be referred in a timely fashion for transplants. Our aim was to evaluate the pattern of referral for liver transplantation and their outcomes in Singapore. METHODS: Consecutive patients referred from 1990 to 2001 were reviewed. Patients from any hospital in Singapore (or the region) could be referred to the program. They were discussed at the weekly meetings. Appropriate patients were placed on the waiting list. "Pending" indicated that the disease was e

[Empowerment, quality of life and participation in neurological rehabilitation. Empirical study with stroke patients and their relatives].

The active role (participation) that patients with chronic conditions are able to achieve has increasingly been recognised as a measure for the effectiveness of prevention- and rehabilitation strategies. An empowerment scale is an especially effective instrument for measuring social participation, and was applied to stroke patients in neurological rehabilitation for the first time. 26 stroke survivors and 26 informal carers, who participated in self-help groups in Lower Austria, were surveyed. The mean age was 63.9 (+/- 10.4) (stroke survivors) and 61.9 (+/- 9.6) years (informal carers). The m

Patterns of participation and successful patient recruitment to American College of Surgeons Oncology Group Z0010, a phase II trial for patients with early-stage breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Historically, fewer than 5% of cancer patients enroll in clinical trials and lack of physician participation is a contributing factor. In 1999, the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG) conducted a multicenter breast cancer trial evaluating the prognostic value of sentinel lymph node (SLN) and bone marrow micrometastases. This report elucidates factors influencing patient accrual. METHODS: Demographics of investigators (N = 198) and their success in accruing patients (N = 5327) were reviewed. ACOSOG Breast Committee members (N = 1136) were surveyed to identify facto

Comparing BEST-CLI Participants with Patients Treated at a Tertiary Center Serving a Regional-Remote Population.

BACKGROUND: The BEST-CLI trial established the first large-scale evidence for revascularization of chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI), but its restrictive eligibility criteria may limit applicability to regional-remote populations. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated BEST-CLI eligibility in a consecutive cohort of patients treated for CLTI at a tertiary vascular center serving the North Queensland regional and remote Australian population. Trial criteria were applied independently by 2 vascular surgeons. The primary outcome was the composite of all-cause mortality and major adverse li

Excessive Daytime Sleepiness, but Not Insomnia Is Associated With Dyslipidaemia in Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Participating in ESADA.

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) as well as insomnia have been associated with a higher risk for cardiovascular disease in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). The link is not fully understood but may involve dyslipidaemia. The aim of the study was to analyse if the EDS and insomnia phenotypes were associated with deranged serum lipid values in patients with OSA recruited from a European real-world cohort. Patients with OSA and a full lipid profile participating in the ESADA database were analysed (n = 12,153). Based on their symptoms, they were categorised into EDS (n = 3123), EDS

Mediators of racial and ethnic inequities in clinical trial participation among patients with cancer, 2011-2023.

BackgroundAlthough racially and ethnically minoritized populations are less likely to participate in cancer trials, it is unknown whether social determinants of health (SDOH) explain these inequities. Here we identify SDOH factors that contribute to racial and ethnic inequities in clinical trial participation among patients with 22 common cancers.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study used electronic health record data (2011-2023) linked to neighborhood (US Census tract) data from multiple sources. Patients were followed from diagnosis to clinical study drug receipt (proxy for trial participat

Barriers and facilitators to smartwatch-based prehabilitation participation among frail surgery patients: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: For older, frail adults, exercise before surgery through prehabilitation (prehab) may hasten return recovery and reduce postoperative complications. We developed a smartwatch-based prehab program (BeFitMe) for older adults that encourages and tracks at-home exercise. The objective of this study was to assess patient perceptions about facilitators and barriers to prehab generally and to using a smartwatch prehab program among older adult thoracic surgery patients to optimize future program implementation. METHODS: We recruited patients, aged ≥50 years who had or were having surgery
