Axis of rotation as a basic feature in visual search.

Searching for a "Q" among "O"s is easier than the opposite search (Treisman & Gormican in Psychological Review, 95, 15-48, 1988). In many cases, such "search asymmetries" occur because it is easier to search when a target is defined by the presence of a feature (i.e., the line terminator defining the tail of the "Q"), rather than by its absence. Treisman proposed that features that produce a search asymmetry are "basic" features in visual search (Treisman & Gormican in Psychological Review, 95, 15-48, 1988; Treisman & Souther in Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 114, 285-310, 1985).

Testing between the gunpowder fuse and the filling-hose analogy for mental curve tracing using electroencephalography: boom!

Curve tracing occurs when a line is followed covertly to accomplish a task, for example, to determine whether two landmarks are on the same line or not (could Highway 61 take Robert Johnson from New Orleans to St Louis?). Previous work suggests that attention either moves along the curve, momentarily activating local representations of the curve during this process, leaving little or no trace of this activation once attention has passed, or attention spreads along the curve, resulting in an activated state along the entire portion of the curve that was traced. We re-examined this issue using e

Seeing red: Relearning to read in a case of Balint's Syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Balint's Syndrome is a rare condition, often associated with hypoxic brain damage. The major characteristic is an inability to localise objects in space, another is simultanagnosia frequently resulting in reading difficulties. We present RN, a 37 year old woman whose major problem with reading was her inability to recognise individual letters correctly in either lower or upper case. We noted, however, that she was better if the letters were shown in red type. The aims were to determine if RN could relearn letters of the alphabet, investigate whether colour affected her abi

Failures of perception in the low-prevalence effect: Evidence from active and passive visual search.

In visual search, rare targets are missed disproportionately often. This low-prevalence effect (LPE) is a robust problem with demonstrable societal consequences. What is the source of the LPE? Is it a perceptual bias against rare targets or a later process, such as premature search termination or motor response errors? In 4 experiments, we examined the LPE using standard visual search (with eye tracking) and 2 variants of rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) in which observers made present/absent decisions after sequences ended. In all experiments, observers looked for 2 target categories (

Asymmetric global motion integration in drifting Gabor arrays.

We examined how ambiguous motion signals are integrated over space to support the unambiguous perception of global motion. The motion of a Gaussian windowed drifting sine grating (Gabor) is consistent with an infinite number of grating velocities. To extract the consistent global motion of multi-Gabor arrays, the visual system must integrate ambiguous motion signals from disparate regions of visual space. We found an interaction between spatial arrangement and global motion integration in this process. Linear arrays of variably oriented Gabor elements appeared to move more slowly, reflecting s

[The dependence of motor response time in discrimination task on the type of available visual information].

The interaction of proprioceptive and visual afferentation was studied in motor task for discrimination of weights of falling objects. The availability of visual information decreased the time of motor response but to different extent depending on the kind of this information. The shortening of response time was significantly greater when subject have seen the beginning of real fall that when he simply seen the control LED signaling the release of object by electromagnet. So, subject accomplishes the task of discrimination of light and heavy object more efficiently if he sees the real falling

Spatial orienting of attention in dyslexic adults using directional and alphabetic cues.

Spatial attention performance was investigated in adults with dyslexia. Groups with and without dyslexia completed literacy/phonological tasks as well as two spatial cueing tasks, in which attention was oriented in response to a centrally presented pictorial (arrow) or alphabetic (letter) cue. Cued response times and orienting effects were largely similar in dyslexic and nonimpaired readers. The one distinct pattern that emerged showed dyslexic adults to have smaller orienting effects in the right than left visual field for letter cues, whereas typical readers showed the opposite pattern. Thes

Outstanding questions about phonological processing in dyslexia.

It is widely accepted that developmental dyslexia results from some sort of phonological deficit. Yet, it can be argued that phonological representations and their processing have been insufficiently tested in dyslexia research. Firstly, claims about how tasks tap into certain kinds of representations or processes are best appreciated in the light of an explicit information-processing model. Here, a cognitive model of lexical access is described, incorporating speech perception, reading and object recognition. The model emphasizes that phonological forms of lexical items are distinct from non-

Reading skills in hyperlexia: a developmental perspective.

Hyperlexia is characterized by advanced word-recognition skills in individuals who otherwise have pronounced cognitive, social, and linguistic handicaps. Language, word recognition, and reading-comprehension skills are reviewed to clarify the nature and core deficits associated with the disorder. It is concluded that hyperlexia should be viewed as part of the normal variation in reading skills, which are themselves associated with individual differences in phonological, orthographic, and semantic processing, short-term memory, and print exposure. A compulsive preoccupation with reading may als

Computation of different optical variables of looming objects in pigeon nucleus rotundus neurons.

Three types of looming-selective neurons have been found in the nucleus rotundus of pigeons, each computing a different optical variable related to image expansion of objects approaching on a direct collision course with the bird. None of these neurons respond to simulated approach toward stationary objects. A detailed analysis of these neurons' firing pattern to approaching objects of different sizes and velocities shows that one group of neurons signals relative rate of expansion tau (tau), a second group signals absolute rate of expansion rho (rho), and a third group signals yet another opt

Recent developments in the neuropsychology and physiology of face processing.

This chapter will review neuropsychological studies of face processing defects. Recent research in this field has been dominated by evidence of preserved face processing in patients who are unaware of these abilities. This phenomenon is referred to as covert recognition and forms a main focus for this review. The second part of the chapter reviews the advances in physiological studies of the brain mechanisms underlying face processing. The relationship between normal perception of faces and information processing at the single cell level is considered. Finally the chapter discusses how the phy

Frameworks of analysis for the neural representation of animate objects and actions.

A variety of cell types exist in the temporal cortex providing high-level visual descriptions of bodies and their movements. We have investigated the sensitivity of such cells to different viewing conditions to determine the frame(s) of reference utilized in processing. The responses of the majority of cells in the upper bank of the superior temporal sulcus (areas TPO and PGa) found to be sensitive to static and dynamic information about the body were selective for one perspective view (e.g. right profile, reaching right or walking left). These cells can be considered to provide viewer-centred

Normal strobe electroretinograms without pattern electroretinograms in albino rats.

Electroretinograms (ERGs) were obtained from pigmented and albino rats to step luminance changes of an unpatterned TV screen. Surround luminance was increased until the ERG became small and focal. In pigmented rats the ERG at on was positive, earlier, and about twice the amplitude of the negative ERG at off. All pigmented rats had pattern ERGs-0.5 cycles/deg in dark agouti rats and an octave less in hooded rats. Implicit peak times were similar to that of the sum of on plus off focal ERGs from the same animals (85 ms). In albino rats off responses were more like on. The resultant sum was conse

Testing the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on the face inversion effect and the N170 event-related potentials (ERPs) component.

The following study investigates the effects of tDCS on face recognition skills indexed by the face inversion effect (better recognition performance for upright vs. inverted faces). We combined tDCS and EEG simultaneously to examine the effects of tDCS on the face inversion effect behaviourally and on the N170 ERPs component. The results from two experiments (overall N = 112) show that anodal tDCS delivered at Fp3 site for 10 min at 1.5 mA (double-blind and between-subjects) can reduce behaviourally the face inversion effect compared to sham (control) stimulation. The ERP results provide some

Childhood contact predicts hemispheric asymmetry in cross-race face processing.

Participants typically process same-race faces more quickly and more accurately than cross-race faces. This deficit is amplified in the right hemisphere of the brain, presumably due to its involvement in configural processing. The present research tested the idea that cross-race contact tunes cognitive and perceptual systems, influencing this asymmetric race-based deficit in face processing. Participants with high and low levels of contact performed a lateralized recognition task with same- and cross-race faces. Replicating prior work, participants with minimal contact showed cross-race defici

Development of brain mechanisms for visual global processing and object segmentation.

Objects have specific cognitive attributes, elicit particular visuo-motor responses, and require visual processes beyond primary visual cortex to combine information over extended regions as a basis for the segmentation and integration of visual objects. As well as segmentation, the assignment of region boundaries to differentiate figure from ground is a key process whose operation can be observed in infants during the early months. Global organization of both motion and pattern information plays a role in object segmentation and integration. These two types of global processing are associated

Experimental visual agnosia in the pigeon.

Recent research on animal cognitive ability has clarified that cognitive ability spreads to several species besides humans. Such studies make it possible to compare brain mechanisms of animal cognition and human cognition. Experimental lesions of the ectostriatum in pigeons caused deficits in the artificial pattern recognition, arbitrary classification of natural objects, conspecific individual recognition and discrimination of two different avian species. The lesions did not result in deficits in natural concept, such as food or conspecific. These results suggest that the ectostriatal lesions

Visual evoked response in head trauma: pattern-shift stimulus.

Studies of visual evoked potentials in head injuries have all utilized the flash stimulus. We studied the efficacy of monocular pattern-shift visual evoked potentials (PSVEPs) in eliciting residual dysfunction of the visual pathways in 33 patients 6 to 24 months after head injury. Those with ocular trauma or ocular pathology were not included. Abnormal PSVEPs were seen in one-third of 33 head-injured patients. Only 1 (11%) of 9 patients with mild cognitive impairment had abnormal PSVEPs compared with 7 (39%) of 18 with moderate and 3 (50%) of 6 with severe cognitive impairment.

A pushing stick or a pulled rubber band: Material perception reverses the causal arrow in agent-patient dynamics.

People effortlessly recognize objects of various materials and predict their behavior from visual information. However, research on causal perception has largely underexplored dynamic interactions involving nonrigid objects, often treating spatiotemporal causality as independent of object properties. To address this gap, we introduce a novel causal perception phenomenon in which speed profiles alone evoke the perception of elastic, nonrigid motion in interactions between simple geometric figures, ultimately shaping causal perception. Using an ambiguous-motion stimulus involving a separation ev
