Engage and adapt: peer-led implementation of HIV navigation in Australia.

Background Alongside partnership, adaptation is one of the enduring themes of the Australian response to HIV, but the ability of peer insight and engagement to shape responses to change is often undervalued. In this article, we present a case study of a peer navigation for people living with HIV, run in partnership with clinical stakeholders, to examine its effectiveness and adaptability within a changing epidemiological landscape. Methods We draw on interviews and focus groups conducted in 2019 and 2020 with 30 peer workers, management and clinical stakeholders of a peer navigation program fo

Reactivity to social stress in ethnic minority men.

Repeated exposures to social exclusion, through a process of sensitization, may result in larger responses to experiences of social stress. The current study tested the hypothesis that healthy Moroccan-Dutch men respond stronger to social stress than Dutch controls 1) in daily life, and 2) in an experimental set-up. A general population sample of 50 Moroccan-Dutch and 50 Dutch young adult males were tested with 1) the Experience Sampling Method, a structured diary technique, assessing reactivity to social stress in daily life, and 2) an experimental exposure to social peer evaluation. No group

Enhancing care in alcohol-associated liver disease through peer support for alcohol use disorder.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) are interconnected conditions that contribute significantly to global morbidity and mortality. Despite advances in medical management, care for individuals with AUD and ALD remains suboptimal due to persistent gaps in psychosocial support, stigma, and limited integration between behavioral health care including AUD treatment services and hepatology. Peer support, emotional, informational, and practical assistance provided by individuals with lived experience, has emerged as a promising, though underutilized, strategy to addr

Studying with Friends in Introductory Biology Is Associated with Low Impact Study Strategies and No Improvement of Exam Scores.

Students often choose to study for exams with friends. Since active learning in class boosts success, instructors might expect studying with peers to also help. However, research offers little support for this. We investigated whether students study with peers because of low metacognitive knowledge about study strategies. At the start and end of a first-term introductory biology course, students reported their study strategies and their knowledge about their effectiveness. These data were combined with student demographic information and grades. We found that students entered university demons

The Good Life with Dementia approach: A realist-informed qualitative study of a peer-tutored course, co-produced with and for people living with dementia.

People with dementia often report a lack of post-diagnostic support, and much of the current dementia training available is for staff or carers, not for the person diagnosed. The Good Life with Dementia course was designed with and for people with a diagnosis of dementia and is co-delivered by peer-tutors living with dementia, supported by a trained facilitator. This study used realist-informed methods, underpinned by a co-productive ethos which values all sources of expertise equally, to better understand the core constructs underpinning the Good Life approach and how these operate to produce

Peer‑led bioethics education in clinical rotations: Three generalisable lessons from a CFIR‑informed implementation case study.

BACKGROUND: Integrating bioethics into clinical training is challenging, particularly in resource-constrained settings. Scalable and low‑cost models are needed but are under‑evaluated. This implementation case study assessed the feasibility and perceived impact of a peer-led, case-based bioethics discussion model. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted a single embedded case study at the College of Medicine in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Forty-four final-year medical students participated in structured peer‑led discussions of authentic clinical ethics cases using a four‑step analytica

Cultivating Connections: An Interprofessional Peer Support Model.

Peer support models have existed for decades in behavioral health care and are being developed for health care professionals to help address high rates of burnout and stress in the health care environment. Such models typically involve individuals from the same profession. With the concurrent increase of interprofessional integrated behavioral health care models, interprofessional peer support seems a viable model. This Open Forum describes how a peer support program for physicians and faculty scientists evolved to include a broader range of health care professionals, providing a framework for

Peer support for health, social care, and educational needs in adult prisons: a systematic scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: Prisoners face inequalities relating to health and social care and educational needs. Peer support (prisoners providing support to other prisoners) is used in addition to professional support to address needs. It is not clear how effective or cost-effective peer-support services are, how they are implemented or experienced, or how best to evaluate such schemes. This review aimed to evaluate the following: 1. Outcomes and economic outcomes that have been studied for prison peer support, and data sources used. 2. Effectiveness and cost of prison peer support. 3. Implementation and ex

Children and adolescents' perceptions of childhood neglect: Content and thematic analyses of childline message boards.

BACKGROUND: Neglect is the most common form of child maltreatment. Its detrimental impact on individuals' physical, psychological, and social functioning is felt by the whole of society. Despite being neglect's subjects, children are only recently included in its research. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to improve understanding of neglect by exploring how children and adolescents talk to peers about neglect-related issues. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Childline is a free, 24-hour UK service that hosts anonymous online message boards. Following consultations with a Young People's Advisory Group, 322 threa

Peer perspectives on friendships among peers with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities: A pilot mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: The benefits of friendships among peers with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities are well supported by research. However, little is known about the nature of these inclusive friendships in inclusive college courses. METHOD: We explored the perspectives of peers on the development of authentic friendships among peers with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities in inclusive college courses in the United States. We used a sequential, explanatory, transformative mixed methods-grounded theory research design. We integrated quantitative (N = 44) and

The POWER of LEARNing and LEADing Together: Shared Learning Communities.

Southern community-based organizations often lack adequate resources to implement high-quality, culturally appropriate HIV programs and services. Shared learning communities (SLCs) combine in-depth training, tailored coaching, and peer-to-peer learning to strengthen HIV programs and services. This paper describes five SLCs, participant characteristics, and their capacity-building components.

Understanding how peers respond to online child maltreatment disclosures: A qualitative content analysis of family violence discussions on social media.

BACKGROUND: Positive, supportive responses to child maltreatment disclosure are critical for victims to receive appropriate resources and support for healing. Young people often prefer to disclose to their peers, frequently on social media platforms. OBJECTIVE: We assessed young people's use of TalkLife, an online peer-to-peer support platform, to respond to the disclosure of child maltreatment. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative content analysis of 1090 comments on childhood maltreatment-related posts on TalkLife between 2013 and 2020. We used an iterative, team-based qualitative content a

"Like a weight off my shoulders": Participating in peer support from the perspectives of young people experiencing homelessness.

The aim of this study is to explore how young people experiencing homelessness or housing instability experience participating in peer support from paid peer support specialists with shared lived experiences. The present study used participatory qualitative methods, specifically a photovoice project with young people (N = 8) experiencing homelessness or housing instability, to understand their experiences of being in a relationship with a peer support specialist. This study found that young people experiencing homelessness or housing instability experienced peer relationships as uniquely carin

#DID: The Role of Social Media in the Presentation of Dissociative Symptoms in Adolescents.

The recent social media-led and -centered movement encouraging mental health awareness, disclosure, and discussion, primarily among adolescents,1 can have significant benefits, including reducing mental health stigma, providing peer and social support, and disseminating information. Conversely, mental health disclosure online provides a catalyst for spreading misinformation and cyberbullying. It may also present opportunities for monetary and other forms of secondary gain; for example, some TikTok dissociative identity disorder (DID) influencers have vast numbers of followers and include donat

Debate: Stigma implications for diagnosing personality disorders in adolescents.

Diagnosing personality disorders (PDs) in adolescence is a complex and often controversial decision. While early diagnosis provides a pathway to treatment, stigmatizing labels might unintentionally increase prejudice and discrimination for youth and their families, resulting in harm and treatment avoidance. In this paper, we outline stigma-related considerations for diagnosing PDs in adolescence, including types of stigma (public stigma, self-stigma, associative stigma) and moderators of stigma (continuum beliefs, biogenetic attributions, PD sub-diagnosis). Research indicates that PDs are amon

The Relationships between Childhood Bullying, School Connectedness, and Adolescent Adiposity, the Fragile Families Child and Wellbeing Study.

BACKGROUND: School environments are important to consider for children's health. This study aims to determine if childhood peer bullying and school connectedness are associated with adolescent adiposity. METHODS: A total of 3377 children from the age 9 child interview of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study had self-reported bullying and school connectedness data at age 9, height and weight measured at ages 9 and 15, and waist circumference was measured during an age 15 home visit. Linear regression models estimated the association between bullying and school connectedness and (1) c

Belonging, social connection and non-clinical care: Experiences of HIV peer support among recently diagnosed people living with HIV in Australia.

Effective HIV treatments have transformed the medical needs of people living with HIV (PLHIV) to a chronic condition. However, stigma, poorer mental health outcomes and social isolation remain significant challenges for many PLHIV. HIV peer support programs have assisted PLHIV in navigating the clinical, emotional and social aspects of living with HIV. We draw on semi-structured interviews with 26 recently diagnosed PLHIV in Australia to explore experiences of HIV peer support services. Our thematic analysis identified three overarching themes. First, participants commonly reported that peer s

Peer Education and Peer Counselling for Health and Well-Being: A Review of Reviews.

Peer education and peer counselling for health and wellbeing have been recognized as complementary approaches to professional intervention for over 50 years, but it is relatively recently that research into effects has become adequate. Potentially, they have advantages in reaching where professionals cannot, but it has not been clear if that potential is fulfilled, although the measurement of effects is difficult. The present paper examines 58 narrative and systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the topic. In peer education, there were many reviews of sexual health and of HIV/AIDS interventio
