Integrating peer support in the treatment of personality disorders: current evidence and dimensional perspective.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Peer support interventions have emerged as a promising adjunct to the treatment of personality disorders, particularly borderline personality disorder (BPD). This review summarizes the rapidly expanding literature on peer support in personality disorders and proposes a dimensional reinterpretation of its potential mechanisms of action through dimensional models of personality functioning. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent literature supports the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of peer support interventions in BPD. Benefits have been reported across recovery-relat

Modeling peer effect modification by network strength: The diffusion of implantable cardioverter defibrillators in the US hospital network.

We develop methodology that allows peer effects (also referred to as social influence and contagion) to be modified by the structural importance of the focal actor's position in the network. The methodology is first developed for a single peer effect and then extended to simultaneously model multiple peer-effects and their modifications by the structural importance of the focal actor. This work is motivated by the diffusion of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) in patients with congestive heart failure across a cardiovascular disease patient-sharing network of United States hospita

Experiences of peer work in drug use service settings: A systematic review of qualitative evidence.

BACKGROUND: People with lived or living experiences of drug use and services have been increasingly incorporated into nonpeer-led mainstream organizational settings as a unique workforce. Despite the much discussed effectiveness of peer services in achieving measurable outcomes, limited attention has been given to the experiential aspects of peer work from the perspectives of peers, clients, or others involved. This systematic review synthesized qualitative evidence examining the experiences of peer work in nonpeer-led drug use service settings. It focused on the benefits of incorporating peer

My feed is what I eat? A qualitative study on adolescents' awareness and appreciation of food marketing on social media.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents spend much of their time online and hence are exposed to a lot of non-core (energy-dense, nutrient-poor) social media food marketing (SMFM). This may influence their dietary choices and health. This present study aimed to investigate adolescents' perceptions towards SMFM; that is, their recognition and appreciation of SMFM. METHODS: Semi-structured one-on-one interviews were conducted with Dutch adolescents aged 13-16 years (n = 16), on Skype. Examples of food promotions on Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube were discussed with adolescents. RESULTS: Adolescents'

Adolescents' perspectives on socio-cultural influences on overweight and obesity in African countries: a systematic scoping review of qualitative studies.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent obesity is a global public health concern, with increasing prevalence rates in many African countries. Studies have highlighted diverse social and cultural influences on weight, but there is uncertainty about how adolescents in Africa perceive and experience these influences. This review aims to describe adolescents' perspectives on how cultural beliefs and norms, peers, family, and media influence weight-related behaviours, body weight, and experiences of weight stigma in African countries. METHODS: We systematically searched Scopus, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, C

PrEP Chicago: A randomized controlled peer change agent intervention to promote the adoption of pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention among young Black men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Advances in biomedical prevention strategies such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) represent a new opportunity for reduci … sion, behavioral influence, social support, and empowerment. Therefore, interventions that leverage peer influence processes to facilitate PrEP uptake are promising strategies to improve sexual health engagement and overcome disparities in outcomes among this at-risk population.

Which reference groups matter for Taiwanese high school adolescent smoking? A card sorting study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence represents a pivotal period for the initiation of smoking behaviours. While family, peer and social groups serve as significant reference groups influencing adolescents' decision-making process, there remains a paucity of research that examines how diversified reference groups influence their smoking decisions. OBJECTIVE: The objective is to compare normative and informative influences given by different reference groups on adolescents' smoking decision-making. DESIGN: This study applied reference group theory and used the card sorting technique. Adolescents were pres

Enhancing Evidence Translation Through Structured Clinical Reasoning: A Mixed-Methods Controlled Feasibility Study of Peer Visibility and Readiness Mechanisms in Applied Learning.

In clinical environments, evidence translation is often stalled by the incomplete bridge between clinicians' agreement with evidence and its implementation. In community oncology, where time constraints and variable resources shape care, this "know-do" gap reflects decision readiness under uncertainty. Clinicians can know the guidelines and still hesitate to act. Closing that practice gap requires more than awareness. Digital applied learning that makes peer clinical reasoning visible may support readiness mechanisms, but feasibility and mechanism signals for scalable peer visibility remain un

A co-created randomised controlled feasibility trial of a peer-led complex oral health intervention in UK secondary schools: the RAISED In Yorkshire RiY study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Tooth decay in secondary school children is one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases in the UK and globally. Whilst almost entirely preventable, oral health inequalities remain a significant public health problem to reach and manage those most vulnerable. School-based prevention strategies targeted to localities with oral health inequality, and incorporating peer-to-peer interventions warrant further evaluation. These peer-to-peer interventions have a bidirectional benefit and are proposed to positively influence both the 'peer leader' and 'peer recipient'; they rely on

A qualitative study of peer education experiences and oral pre-exposure prophylaxis use among adolescent girls and young women at high risk of HIV acquisition in Kampala, Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use remains low among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) at high HIV risk in Eastern … to use PrEP stemmed from HIV risk awareness, positive experiences and attitudes regarding PrEP use, peer influence and peer-led psychosocial support. AGYW gained behavioural skills to incorporate PrEP in daily routines, use it discreetly and maintain adherence when travelling. Non-disclosure of PrEP use was commonly used to mitigate barriers to PrEP use. Persist …

Exploring the directionality in the relationship between descriptive and injunctive parental and peer norms and snacking behavior in a three-year-cross-lagged study.

BACKGROUND: People's eating behavior is assumed to be influenced by what other people do (perceived descriptive norms) and what others approve of (perceived injunctive norms). It has been suggested that adolescents are more susceptible to peer norms than parental norms, because they experience a strong need for group acceptance that leads to conforming to peer group norms. The current study examined changes in snacking behavior and four types of social norms (i.e., parental and peer descriptive and injunctive norms) that promoted fruit and vegetable intake among adolescents. This study was the

Longitudinal links between childhood peer victimization, internalizing and externalizing problems, and academic functioning: developmental cascades.

Developmental cascade models linking childhood peer victimization, internalizing and externalizing problems, and academic functioning were examined in a sample of 695 children assessed in Grade 3 (academic only) and Grades 5, 6, 7, and 8. Results revealed several complex patterns of associations in which poorer functioning in one domain influenced poorer outcomes in other areas. For example, a symptom driven pathway was consistently found with internalizing problems predicting future peer victimization. Support for an academic incompetence model was also found-- lower GPA in Grade 5, 6, and 7

Use of prophylactic antibiotics in surgical procedures: peer review guidelines as a method for quality assurance.

Concomitant with the development of guidelines for the use of prophylactic antibiotics in surgery, the Veterans Administration undertook a survey of its surgical chiefs in which the likelihood of peer review guidelines being an effective method of quality assurance was assessed. The scope of the present problem was also assessed in terms of the misuse of antimicrobial agents in surgical units. The implications of this study for quality assurance are:(1) Chiefs of surgery can be influenced by peer review guidelines, but other sources can also have impact. (2) The control practices used by chief

Adoptive parent hostility and children's peer behavior problems: examining the role of genetically informed child attributes on adoptive parent behavior.

Socially disruptive behavior during peer interactions in early childhood is detrimental to children's social, emotional, and academic development. Few studies have investigated the developmental underpinnings of children's socially disruptive behavior using genetically sensitive research designs that allow examination of parent-on-child and child-on-parent (evocative genotype-environment correlation [rGE]) effects when examining family process and child outcome associations. Using an adoption-at-birth design, the present study controlled for passive genotype-environment correlation and directl
