Multiple tumors and a novel E2F-4 mutation. A case report.

OBJECTIVE: In this work we aimed to test the hypothesis that perfectionism plays a third variable role in the psychological process leading from perceived criticism to eating disorders (ED). METHOD: Forty-nine individuals with ED and 49 controls completed the Concern over Mistakes subscale of the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, the Perceived Criticism Inventory, and the Drive for Thinness, Bulimia, and Body Dissatisfaction subscales of the Eating Disorders Inventory. Mediational and moderational models were tested. RESULTS: Analyses revealed that perfectionism mediates between perceive…

The relationships between hoarding-related behaviours and disordered eating in a non-clinical adult sample: an exploratory study.

The prevalence of disordered eating is reportedly high in people with hoarding behaviours, and both eating disorders (ED) and hoarding disorder (HD) show strong associations with anxiety/depression. There is also some evidence that both may be underpinned by aspects of perfectionism. In a non-clinical sample of 252 adults (187 females) we explored possible relationships between disordered eating and hoarding severity, and assessed the relationships between hoarding, eating disorders and perfectionism. After controlling for gender and mood (anxiety and depression) we found significant positive …

Trail making task performance in inpatients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

Set-shifting inefficiencies have been consistently identified in adults with anorexia nervosa (AN). It is less clear to what degree similar inefficiencies are present in those with bulimia nervosa (BN). It is also unknown whether perfectionism is related to set-shifting performance. We employed a commonly used set-shifting measure, the Trail Making Test (TMT), to compare the performance of inpatients with AN and BN with a healthy control sample. We also investigated whether perfectionism predicted TMT scores. Only the BN sample showed significantly suboptimal performance, while the AN sample w…

Personality factors and vulnerability to post-traumatic stress responses after childbirth.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether levels of perfectionism, organization, and intolerance of uncertainty predispose women to more negative birth experiences and post-partum post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). Birth experience was also examined as a potential moderator of the relationship between levels of the personality traits and post-natal PTSS. DESIGN: Prospective survey. METHOD: First-time expectant mothers (N = 10,000) were contacted via Emma's Diary during the perinatal period. At 32-42 weeks' gestation, participants completed measures examining the three personality traits and pre…

Anorexia nervosa, weight restoration and biological siblings: Differences and similarities in clinical characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with clinical characteristics including eating disorder symptomatology, negative mood states, perfectionism and cognitive inflexibility. Whether these characteristics differ across illness stages, and are also present in first-degree relatives, demonstrating heritability, is unclear. The aim of this research was to compare current AN (c-AN), weight-restored AN (wr-AN), sisters of individuals with AN (AN-sis) and healthy controls (HC) on these measures. METHOD: Eighty participants (n = 20/group) completed the study. RESULTS: Eating disorder sympt…

Peer influence on bulimic symptoms in college students.

This longitudinal study examined the influence of peer selection and socialization on bulimic symptoms in college students. Ninety-eight participants completed measures of bulimic symptoms, self-esteem, perfectionism, and impulsivity in the spring and fall of 2003. Peer influence was assessed by examining similarity among selected peers, unselected peers, and nonpeers over time. Among selected peers, bulimic symptoms demonstrated patterns of socialization, self-esteem and perfectionism demonstrated patterns of selection, and these personality traits longitudinally predicted changes in bulimic …

Examining the Contribution of Perfectionistic Traits to the Construct Validity of the DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorder.

Scholars of perfectionism have proposed significant modifications to DSM-5's alternative model of personality disorders (AMPD), such that (1) perfectionism be expanded beyond the inclusion of a singular trait-rigid perfectionism-and (2) perfectionistic traits be specified as trait descriptors of personality disorders (PDs) other than obsessive-compulsive PD. In this study, we evaluate these proposals by examining the degree to which (a) perfectionistic traits are already instantiated in Section II and Section III models of personality pathology; and (b) perfectionistic traits meaningfully augm…

The Association of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder with Impairment Related to Eating Pathology.

Prior work has shown a number of similarities between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and eating disorders such as perfectionism and depressive symptoms. However, distress and impairment due to eating pathology are also highly comorbid with other disorders, which brings into question whether the relationship with eating pathology is unique to OCD. The aims of the current study were 1) to test perfectionism and depression as mediators of the relationship between OCD and eating pathology, and 2) to determine whether OCD is related to greater distress/impairment regarding eating habits, exerc…

Determining the potential links of self-compassion with eating pathology and body image among women and men: A cross-sectional mediational study.

This study examined whether rumination, shame, self-criticism, and perfectionism mediate the previously established link between self-compassion and both eating and body image concerns. A cross-sectional online survey was completed by a community sample of non-clinical adult women (n = 369) and men (n = 201). Participants completed standardised measures of self-compassion (predictor), rumination, external shame, perfectionism and self-criticism (mediating variables), and eating pathology and body image (criterion variables). Path analyses confirmed that higher self-compassion was serially link…

Genetic variation at the TPH2 gene influences impulsivity in addition to eating disorders.

Genes are involved in eating disorders (EDs) and self-induced vomiting (SV), a key symptom of different types of EDs. Perfectionism and impulsivity are potential risk factors for EDs. TPH2 (tryptophan hydroxylase 2) SNP rs1473473 was previously associated with anorexia nervosa and EDs characterized by SV. Could perfectionism or impulsivity be underlying the association between rs1473473 and EDs? Genetic association between TPH2 SNP rs1473473 and perfectionism or impulsivity was first evaluated in a random control group (N = 512). The associations obtained in this control group were subsequentl…
