Addition of SNAP to perinatal risk factors improves the prediction of bronchopulmonary dysplasia or death in critically ill preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is the most common serious pulmonary morbidity in premature infants. The score for neonatal acute physiology (SNAP) is a physiologic severity index for neonatal intensive care and correlates well with neonatal mortality and clinical outcomes. The prognostic value of the SNAP score for BPD in preterm infants remains to be clarified. The aim of the study was to determine whether SNAP can predict the development of BPD or death, and to investigate the contribution of SNAP to the predictive accuracy of other potential perinatal risk factors for the adve

Compartment-specific soluble immune profiles associated with preterm birth, perinatal death, and low birthweight in pregnant individuals living with HIV.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in pregnancy is associated with preterm birth (PTB), low birthweight (LBW), and perinatal death (PND). Although antiretroviral therapy (ART) suppresses viral load it does not prevent HIV-associated adverse pregnancy outcomes or resolve inflammation. As circulating maternal immune factors may not fully capture maternal-fetal interface immune dysregulation, this observational cohort study aimed to identify localized and systemic immune factors associated with PTB, LBW and PND in ART-treated pregnant people living with HIV (PPLWH). METHODS…

Double knock-out of Hmga1 and Hipk2 genes causes perinatal death associated to respiratory distress and thyroid abnormalities in mice.

The serine-threonine kinase homeodomain-interacting protein kinase 2 (HIPK2) modulates important cellular functions during development, acting as a signal integrator of a wide variety of stress signals, and as a regulator of transcription factors and cofactors. We have previously demonstrated that HIPK2 binds and phosphorylates High-Mobility Group A1 (HMGA1), an architectural chromatinic protein ubiquitously expressed in embryonic tissues, decreasing its binding affinity to DNA. To better define the functional role of HIPK2 and HMGA1 interaction in vivo, we generated mice in which both genes a

Determinants of externally visible birth defects among perinatal deaths at Adama Comprehensive Specialized Hospital: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Birth defects (BDs) are the major causes of infant morbidity and mortality in both developed and developing countries. Regardless of their clinical importance, few studies on predisposing factors have been conducted in Ethiopia. However, due to a lack of advanced diagnostic materials, we only considered the externally visible BDs. OBJECTIVE: To assess the determinants of externally visible birth defects among perinatal deaths at Adama Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. METHODS: A retrospective unmatched case-control study design was conducted from November 01 to 30, 2021. The sa…

Boxing up death: The use of symbolic-material devices to address gestational and perinatal mourning in hospitals and families in Catalonia (Spain).

One of the strategies used by Spanish hospitals to address gestational and perinatal mourning is the "memory box." This box contains various elements that refer to the child who has died and seeks to help parents to move through the mourning process. This secular strategy has its historical roots in a popular ritual practice that has fallen into disuse called the "velorio del angelito" (the angel's wake). The purpose of this article is to analyze the role that the memory box plays in addressing mourning associated with perinatal or gestational death for affected families, highlighting how it a

Adenosine-deaminase-deficient mice die perinatally and exhibit liver-cell degeneration, atelectasis and small intestinal cell death.

We report the generation and characterization of mice lacking adenosine deaminase (ADA). In humans, absence of ADA causes severe combined immunodeficiency. In contrast, ADA-deficient mice die perinatally with marked liver-cell degeneration, but lack abnormalities in the thymus. The ADA substrates, adenosine and deoxyadenosine, are increased in ADA-deficient mice. Adenine deoxyribonucleotides are only modestly elevated, whereas S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase activity is reduced more than 85%. Consequently, the ratio of S-adenosylhomocysteine (AdoMet) to S-adenosyl homocysteine (AdoHcy) is red

Validation of the miniPIERS model and a prognostic model for perinatal death in hypertensive pregnancy: Insights from the PREECARDIA study in Guinea-Bissau.

OBJECTIVE: Using data from the PREECARDIA study, we aimed to evaluate the performance of the miniPIERS model for adverse maternal outcomes and the prognostic model for perinatal death in Bissau. METHODS: We conducted an external validation of the two predictor models using prospectively collected data from women with preeclampsia recruited at Hospital Nacional Simão Mendes, in Guinea-Bissau, between June 2023 and January 2025. Model performance was assessed by evaluating discrimination, calibration, and risk stratification across different probability thresholds. RESULTS: During this period,…

Adherence to guidelines and suboptimal practice in term breech delivery with perinatal death- a population-based case-control study in Norway.

BACKGROUND: In a recent population-based study we reported excess risk of neonatal mortality associated with vaginal breech delivery. In this case-control study we examine whether deviations from Norwegian guidelines are more common in breech deliveries resulting in intrapartum or neonatal deaths than in breech deliveries where the offspring survives, and if these deaths are potentially avoidable. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Case-control study completed as a perinatal audit including term breech deliveries of singleton without congenital anomalies in Norway from 1999 to 2015. Deliveries where the c

A hypothermia mimetic molecule (zr17-2) reduces ganglion cell death, gliosis, and electroretinogram distortion in male rats subjected to perinatal asphyxia.

Introduction: Perinatal asphyxia (PA) represents a major problem in perinatology and may cause visual losses, including blindness. We, and others, have shown that hypothermia prevents retinal symptoms associated to PA. In the present work, we evaluate whether a hypothermia mimetic small molecule, zr17-2, has similar effects in the context of PA. Methods: Four experimental groups were studied in male rats: Naturally born rats as controls (CTL), naturally born rats injected s.c. with 50 µL of 330 nmols/L zr17-2 (ZR), animals that were exposed to PA for 20 min at 37°C (PA), and rats that were exp

Perinatal outcomes following single intrauterine death in monochorionic twin pregnancies complicated by twin anemia polycythemia sequence: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Most of the studies reporting the outcome of the surviving twin after single intra-uterine fetal death (sIUFD) focused on uncomplicated pregnancies or those affected by twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, while there is a paucity of data for those complicated by twin anemia polycythemia sequence (TAPS). The aim of this systematic review was to report perinatal outcomes in monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) twin pregnancies complicated by TAPS after sIUFD, according to gestational age at fetal loss and the presence of pregnancy-related comorbidities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: MEDLINE, EM
