The authors report a case of 32-week-old newborn, admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for Newborns. Mechanical ventilation was needed from the first day of life. The patient was treated with indomethacin on the second day of life due to patent ductus arteriosus. On the seventh day pneumoperitoneum was diagnosed, emergency surgery was performed revealing perforation of Meckel's diverticulum. Perinatal asphyxia and indomethacin administration probably played an important role in this process.

A 25-year-old male with hyperthyroidism had in the first week of treatment signs of thyreotoxic periodic paralysis with very low potassium level (2.16 mmol/ml) and fivefold increase in serum myoglobin level (600 ng/ml) indicating damage to muscle fibres undetectable in EMG examination. The clinical symptoms regressed after intravenous administration of potassium.

In view of the fact that in the early part of this century Emil Kraepelin clearly described the relationship between psychotic episodes and the menstrual cycle it is surprising that the scientific elucidation of the phenomenon as a primary endocrine disorder came only decades later. Furthermore, the German literature has paid little attention to the problem, which was given the name "periodic psychosis of puberty" in 1963. In this article an overview of the literature is given, the symptoms and course of the disorder are described and two cases are reported. The course appears to be variable.

We report a sporadic case of periodic ataxia characterized by recurrent attacks of vertigo and ataxia. A 62-year-old male was known to have nystagmus at the age of 18. He has had recurrent episodes of vertigo and ataxia since the age of 48. During an attack remarkable downbeat nystagmus, limb ataxia predominant in the lower extremities and ataxic gait were present. MRI demonstrated an atrophy of the anterosuperior region of the cerebellar vermis. Vertical nystagmus, dysesthesia of gloves and stocking type and deep sensory disorder persisted during interictal intervals. There is no finding whic

We report about a four weeks old male infant who developed jaundice with cholangitis and fever caused by cholelithiasis which could be confirmed by sonographic examination. Familiar history revealed several relatives with gallstones.

We present the case of a 21-year-old man who presented to the emergency department with an episode of profound weakness due to thyrotoxic periodic paralysis, a syndrome of muscular weakness occurring in patients with hyperthyroidism. Prior to the diagnosis, the patient was treated with a parenteral tranquilizer. When hypokalemia was discovered, potassium was administered, resulting in the development of hyperkalemia. Episodes of thyrotoxic periodic paralysis are usually self limited, and recovery of motor strength is complete. However, potassium is frequently administered to hasten recovery an

We report ana analysis of 12 cases in which periodic activity was observed in more than one EEG recording in patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (4 cases), encephalitis of unknown etiology (1 case) and vascular disease (7 cases). In the patients with infective disease periodic high voltage potentials were elicited from all over the brain and the background rhythm was markedly impaired. In the patients with vascular disease the bursts were localized, reversible and sometimes recurrent. The impression gained is that a periodic EEG pattern denotes a pathological modification of beha

A case of thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is reported in a Hispanic man with an unusual recurrence six weeks after radioactive iodine treatment. Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis has now been well characterized in the literature: it occurs primarily in Orientals with an overwhelming male preponderance and a higher association of specific HLA antigens. Clinical manifestations include onset after high carbohydrate ingestion or heavy exertion, with progressive symmetric weakness leading to flaccid paralysis of the extremities and other muscle groups, lasting several hours. If hypokalemia is present, po

We investigated the clinical course in 35 healthy newborn with premature beats and studied the literature with regard to their frequency, pathogenesis, and therapy with the following results: Investigations with continuous monitoring or long-term ECG registration show a frequency of 7-25%. In literature, almost one-fourth, in our patients one-half of the newborn have ventricular premature beats. These will probably disappear later than atrial premature beats, but their prognosis is not worse. The premature beats of newborn are often complex (blocked or aberrant conduction, bigeminus, tachycard

A patient with periodic neutropenia exhibited simultaneous monocytopenia, and epinephrine infusion revealed no monocytes in the marginating pool during neutropenia. Lymphocytes, eosinophils, and platelets also fluctuated periodically, but serial bone marrow studies and epinephrine infusion data indicate these fluctuations could have represented epiphenomena rather than a more global form of periodic hematopoiesis. Bone marrow descriptions of most cases of periodic neutropenia have indicated a "maturation arrest" at the promyelocyte or myelocyte stage prior to development of neutropenia; periph
