The Burden of the Perfect Frame: A Scoping Review on Personality and Muscle Dysmorphia.

Research on muscle dysmorphia (MD), currently conceptualized as a clinical specifier for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), is rapidly expanding. Although personality traits and disorders have been proposed as relevant risk factors for the development of BDD, their role in MD remains insufficiently understood. This scoping review aims to synthesize the existing empirical literature on the associations between MD and personality, while identifying key research gaps and clinical challenges. Following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across PsycArticles, PubMed, Scopus, W

Latino men's sexual behavior with transgender persons.

Male-to-female transgender persons are thought to be "vectors" for HIV/STI transmission, yet little quantitative information exists about the risk behavior of their male sexual partners who may serve as a "bridge" for HIV transmission into the general population. As part of an online survey examining the sexual risk behavior of Latino men who have sex with men (N = 1,026), we identified 44 (4%) participants who reported having had sex with a transgender partner. Compared with a randomly selected sub-sample of 200 men who did not report sex with a transgender person, sexual partners of transgen

Uncovering trajectories of personality functioning in adolescence and their associations with baseline psychopathology.

As the conceptualization of personality disorders shifts from a categorical to a dimensional assessment, understanding the trajectory of personality functioning in adolescence becomes crucial. Thus, this study aimed to examine distinct trajectories of personality functioning over a two-year period in a community sample of adolescents, while identifying associated factors. A three-wave longitudinal study with a one-year interval between assessments was conducted from 2021 to 2023 with Lithuanian adolescents aged 11-18 (N = 855; M = 14.44, SD = 1.60; 62.5% female, 37.5% male) from a community sa

How I experienced tele-intervention: Qualitative insights from persons who stutter.

BACKGROUND: Tele-intervention gained popularity, during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, prompting healthcare providers to adapt to remote service delivery. Research about stuttering treatment via tele-intervention in South Africa is limited. Speech-language therapists (SLTs) require further insights to deliver a well-supported approach for treatment of stuttering using tele-intervention, despite limitations such as technological disruptions, including loadshedding, that impact service reliability. OBJECTIVES: The study aims to explore clients' experiences with tele-intervent

Gene expression networks regulated by human personality.

Genome-wide association studies of human personality have been carried out, but transcription of the whole genome has not been studied in relation to personality in humans. We collected genome-wide expression profiles of adults to characterize the regulation of expression and function in genes related to human personality. We devised an innovative multi-omic approach to network analysis to identify the key control elements and interactions in multi-modular networks. We identified sets of transcribed genes that were co-expressed in specific brain regions with genes known to be associated with p

A Million Person Study Innovation: Evaluating Cognitive Impairment and other Morbidity Outcomes from Chronic Radiation Exposure Through Linkages with the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services Assessment and Claims Data.

The study of One Million U.S. Radiation Workers and Veterans, the Million Person Study (MPS), examines the health consequences, both cancer and non-cancer, of exposure to ionizing radiation received gradually over time. Recently the MPS has focused on mortality patterns from neurological and behavioral conditions, e.g., Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and motor neuron disease such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. A fuller picture of radiation-related late effects comes from studying both mortality and the occurrence (incidence) of conditions not leading to death. According

Nutrition and dementia care: developing an evidence-based model for nutritional care in nursing homes.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing volume of research to offer improvements in nutritional care for people with dementia living in nursing homes. Whilst a number of interventions have been identified to support food and drink intake, there has been no systematic research to understand the factors for improving nutritional care from the perspectives of all those delivering care in nursing homes. The aim of this study was to develop a research informed model for understanding the complex nutritional problems associated with eating and drinking for people with dementia. METHODS: We conducted nine fo

Developing culturally sensitive cancer genetics communication aids for African Americans.

The goal of this project was to develop educational materials to communicate genetic health information in a culturally sensitive manner. These materials were designed to communicate information about cancer risk, genetic testing options, and health management options in an African American kindred with a known BRCA1 mutation. Educational materials were pilot-tested in four African American focus groups varying in socioeconomic status and gender. The audiotaped focus groups consisted of presentation of the educational materials, followed by a feedback session led by an African American facilit

Identification of Opioid Medications Among Persons With Opioid Use Disorder and Chronic Pain.

BACKGROUND: Persons with both opioid use disorder (OUD) and chronic pain face mental health challenges, poor substance use prognosis, and compromised quality of life. One way to improve outcomes in this vulnerable patient population is to enhance health literacy, particularly literacy regarding opioid medications. A fundamental metric of such literacy is whether persons with OUD can correctly identify medications, including those prescribed for OUD, as opioids. This question has yet to be researched extensively. METHODS: Participants were 163 adults with OUD and chronic pain receiving bupreno

Common Ground between Biological Rhythms and Forensics.

Biological clocks set the timing for a large number of essential processes in the living human organism. After death, scientific evidence is required in forensic investigations in order to collect as much information as possible on the death circumstances and personal identifiers of the deceased victim. We summarize the associations between the molecular mechanisms of biological rhythms and forensically relevant aspects, including post-mortem interval and cause of death, entomological findings, sex, age, ethnicity and development. Given their importance during lifetime, biological rhythms coul
