Transcranial magnetic stimulation and functional magnet resonance imaging evaluation of adductor spasmodic dysphonia during phonation.

BACKGROUND: Reduced intracortical inhibition is a neurophysiologic finding in focal dystonia that suggests a broader problem of impaired cortical excitability within the brain. A robust understanding of the neurophysiology in dystonia is essential to elucidate the pathophysiology of the disorder and develop new treatments. The cortical silent period (cSP) is a reliable, non-invasive method to measure intracortical inhibition in the primary motor cortex associated with a muscle of interest. In adductor spasmodic dysphonia (AdSD), cSP of the laryngeal motor cortex (LMC) which directly correspond

Vocal tract shape and acoustic adjustments of children during phonation into narrow flow-resistant tubes.

The goal of the study is to quantify the salient vocal tract acoustic, subglottal acoustic, and vocal tract physiological characteristics during phonation into a narrow flow-resistant tube with 2.53 mm inner diameter and 124 mm length in typically developing vocally healthy children using simultaneous microphone, accelerometer, and 3D/4D ultrasound recordings. Acoustic measurements included fundamental frequency (fo), first formant frequency (F1), second formant frequency (F2), first subglottal resonance (FSg1), and peak-to-peak amplitude ratio (Pvt:Psg). Physiological measurements included po

Improved subglottal pressure estimation from neck-surface vibration in healthy speakers producing non-modal phonation.

Subglottal air pressure plays a major role in voice production and is a primary factor in controlling voice onset, offset, sound pressure level, glottal airflow, vocal fold collision pressures, and variations in fundamental frequency. Previous work has shown promise for the estimation of subglottal pressure from an unobtrusive miniature accelerometer sensor attached to the anterior base of the neck during typical modal voice production across multiple pitch and vowel contexts. This study expands on that work to incorporate additional accelerometer-based measures of vocal function to compensate

The influence of gravity on respiratory kinematics during phonation measured by dynamic magnetic resonance imaging.

Respiratory kinematics are important for the regulation of voice production. Dynamic MRI is an excellent tool to study respiratory motion providing high-resolution cross-sectional images. Unfortunately, in clinical MRI systems images can only be acquired in a horizontal subject position, which does not take into account gravitational effects on the respiratory apparatus. To study the effect of body posture on respiratory kinematics during phonation, 8 singers were examined both in an open-configuration MRI with a rotatable gantry and a conventional horizontal MRI system. During dynamic MRI the

Evaluating the Voice Type Component Distributions of Excised Larynx Phonations at Three Subglottal Pressures.

Purpose The excised canine larynx provides an advantageous experimental framework in the study of voice physiology. In recent years, signal processing methods have been applied to analyze phonations in excised canine larynx experiments. However, phonations have a highly complex and nonstationary nature corresponding to different proportions of regular and chaotic signal elements. Current nonlinear dynamic methods that are used to assess the degree of irregularity in the voice fail to recognize the distribution of voice type components (VTCs). Method Based on measures of intrinsic dimension, th

Anatomy and Functional Morphology of the Mysticete Rorqual Whale Larynx: Phonation Positions of the U-Fold.

Many Mysticetes (baleen whales) are acoustically active marine mammals. This is epitomized by rorquals, and specifically male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) whose complex songs comprise a wide range of vocalizations. The sound production mechanism of odontocetes (toothed whales, including dolphins and porpoises) is well described, in contrast to that of mysticetes whose vocalization mechanism remains a subject of active scientific investigation. Anatomical observations and acoustic signal processing have led to divergent hypotheses under the framework of a production-based approach.

Computational study of effects of tension imbalance on phonation in a three-dimensional tubular larynx model.

OBJECTIVES: The present study explores the use of a continuum-based computational model to investigate the effect of left-right tension imbalance on vocal fold (VF) vibrations and glottal aerodynamics, as well as its implication on phonation. The study allows us to gain new insights into the underlying physical mechanism of irregularities induced by VF tension imbalance associated with unilateral cricothyroid muscle paralysis. METHODS: A three-dimensional simulation of glottal flow and VF dynamics in a tubular laryngeal model with tension imbalance was conducted by using a coupled flow-struct

Analysis of flow-structure interaction in the larynx during phonation using an immersed-boundary method.

A recently developed immersed-boundary method is used to model the flow-structure interaction associated with the human phonation. The glottal airflow is modeled as a two-dimensional incompressible flow driven by a constant subglottal pressure, and the vocal folds are modeled as a pair of three-layered, two-dimensional, viscoelastic structures. Both the fluid dynamics and viscoelasticity are solved on fixed Cartesian grids using a sharp-interface immersed boundary method. It is found that the vibration mode and frequency of the vocal fold model are associated with the eigenmodes of the structu

The pitch rise paradigm: a new task for real-time endoscopy of non-stationary phonation.

As standard stroboscopy is restricted to the recording of periodic vocal fold vibrations, observations of non-stationary laryngeal mechanisms demand real-time recording systems, the most advanced being the high-speed video technique. It allows the registration of laryngeal parameters during a variation of the fundamental frequency. The aim of this study was to compare amplitude and frequency parameters of vocal fold vibration during stationary and non-stationary phonation, i.e. a monotonous pitch rise. Twenty-nine young female adults with no incidence of voice disorders were examined while per

[Effect of deep brain stimulation on glottal phonation in patients with Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis].

The present study examines the effect of neurostimulatory operations on glottal phonation of 3 parkinsonian patients and 3 patients with multiple sclerosis. With the help of two voice analysis programs (MDVP from Kay Elemetrics and EEG Program by Marasek) for the acoustic and electroglottographic definition of voice characteristics, vowel productions of the patients, which were recorded under two conditions (with and without stimulation), were analysed. In a first step, significantly different intrasubject means in the two conditions indicate the effect of neurostimulation. The strength of the

[Stereoendoscopic observation of the larynx--vocal fold length in respiration and in phonation with vocal pitch change].

By use of a rigid stereoendoscope system, the vocal fold length in living human subjects was measured in absolute values. The subjects were seven adults. None of them had special training for singing. The measurements were made during inspiration and phonation with systematic changes in vocal pitch. During respiration, the glottal width was widened in inspiration and narrowed in expiration. Following the widening of the glottis, the vocal fold length increased and following the narrowing of the glottis, it decreased. In steady phonation with systematic changes in vocal pitch, the minimum lengt

Pressure, Flow, and Glottal Area Waveform Profile Changes During Phonation Using the Acapella Choice Device.

INTRODUCTION: Vibratory positive expiratory pressure (PEP) devices are now commonly used as a resource for voice therapy. PEP devices promote improved vocal economy with the added benefit of producing a massage effect in the vocal tract. Although the benefits of PEP devices for voice have already been demonstrated, their impact on the vocal source is still not very clear. This study assesses the impact of phonation into the Acapella Choice (a type of PEP device) on the voice. METHODS: Three normophonic subjects underwent high-speed videoendoscopy assessment while pressure, flow and electroglo
