Late infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis and dopamine deficiency.

Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis is a severe neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disorder. Gamma-aminobutyric acid and glutamate deficiency have been reported with CLN1, CLN3, and CLN6. Isolated biopterin/neopterin without dopamine deficiency has been reported in 1 patient with a CLN2 mutation. This report describes a patient with a CLN2 mutation with symptomatic biopterin and dopamine deficiency. A 4-year-old boy presented with intractable epilepsy and developmental regression starting 1 year previously. His exam showed retinopathy, scanning speech, dysmetria, and ataxic fenestrating gait with

Electroencephalography in autosomal dominant adult neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the findings in 59 EEGs from six patients from three generations in a family with autosomal dominant adult neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (Parry disease), autopsy proven, with a follow up of 9-21 years. METHODS: Descriptive, visual EEG analysis. RESULTS: In these patients with epilepsy, myoclonus, dementia and Parkinsonism, EEGs were all severely abnormal, with generalized or bilateral independent periodic epileptiform discharges as the most common pattern. In a few EEGs periodic discharges were seen. No alpha rhythm was present. No paroxysmal response to photic stimul

Migraine-like symptoms triggered by occipital lobe seizures: response to sumatriptan.

BACKGROUND: The relationship of ictal and post-ictal cephalic pain to migraine remains debatable. We hereby report 2 patients, a 27-year-old woman and 41-year-old man were referred for assessment of migraine of 10 years and 4 years duration, respectively. The man described a recent episode of "vacant stare" and the woman has sensitivity to bright colours and light. Neurological examination, visual field testing, CAT scan, MRI scan, and prolonged EEG recordings were accomplished for each patient. RESULTS: The man had a spontaneous seizure with ictal discharge arising from the right occipital l

Photoreactive flow changes in the posterior cerebral artery in control subjects and patients with occipital lobe infarction.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Photoreactive flow changes of the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) in control subjects and patients with unilateral occipital lobe infarction were investigated to study the hypothesis that occipital lobe infarction of varying extent leads to a reduced visually activated flow increase in the ipsilateral PCA. METHODS: Maximum mean flow velocity (MFV) of the PCA was investigated by transcranial Doppler sonography after photic stimulation of the retina. RESULTS: In 25 control subjects MFV was increased by 30.6 +/- 9.7%. In 13 patients with unilateral occipital lobe infarct

Photosensitivity as a model for acute antiepileptic drug studies.

A technique is described for assessing the efficacy and time course of effects of antiepileptic drugs, after a single acute dose, by means of their action on the human photo-convulsive response. The range of frequencies of intermittent photic stimulation to which the patient is sensitive (photosensitivity range) is determined in a standardized manner at hourly intervals over the course of a waking day. 82 controlled studies have established that, with the rare exceptions of patients showing a consistent circadian rhythm of photosensitivity, the photosensitivity range is stable over this time s

The electroencephalogram in patients with epilepsy.

The EEG is useful in evaluating seizure disorders by establishing or confirming the diagnosis of a seizure disorder, determining the type and focus of origin of the seizure, and helping make the distinction between an epileptic attack and a nonepileptic condition. The EEG also may show other abnormalities, such as focal slowing, that give a clue about the underlying disease process. A negative EEG does not exclude the diagnosis of epilepsy. Activating procedures such as hyperventilation, photic stimulation, and recording during sleep may help bring out epileptiform activity. Occasionally, repe

[Statistical analysis of the parameters defining the cortical visual evoked potentials in the phases of the sleep-wake cycle].

Visual evoked potential parameters (latencies, intervals of latencies and amplitudes) obtained by photic stimulation using a light-emitting diode implanted in the frontal sinus of cats were studied by statistical methods (analysis of variance) during the stages of wakefulness, slow sleep and paradoxical sleep. The results show: a) greater intraindividual homogeneity in all cases with special emphasis on the latencies; b) the greatest homogeneity of responses was found during slow sleep and paradoxical sleep stages; c) in relation to the influences exerted by the sleep-wakefulness cycle on the

EEG in adults in the laboratory or at the patient's bedside.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) recording in the laboratory lasts at least 20 minutes and uses 19 active electrodes. It includes rest periods, stimulation procedures, a 3-mn hyperventilation period and intermittent photic stimulation (IPS). Recorded at the bedside, the EEG uses at least eight electrodes; the stimulation procedures, duration of the EEG and need to repeat the examination depend on the indication. Simultaneous video recording is recommended. The EEG report describes the basic rhythm, its reactivity and pathological activities, whether epileptic or not, and their organization. The synt

Dorsal raphe nucleus modulates neuronal activity in rat intergeniculate leaflet.

Serotonergic input from midbrain raphe nuclei is believed to have a significant effect on mammalian circadian timing system. The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) receives its serotonergic input from the median raphe nucleus, while the intergeniculate leaflet (IGL) receives serotonergic innervation from the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN). The present paper was aimed at determining whether projection from the DRN affected rhythmic neuronal oscillations in the IGL of rats. We investigated the impact of electrolytic lesions and electric stimulation of the DRN on spontaneous isoperiodic (i.e. burst firing

Time2: A Framework for the Neural Dynamics of Visual Perception.

Whenever we look at an object, we seem to perceive it immediately. However, this is not the case for two reasons. First, it takes hundreds of milliseconds for the brain to process visual information reaching the retina. Second, perceiving an object requires fixating it for some duration-typically hundreds of milliseconds-during which the retina continuously receives new visual information. These facts together imply that visual information is both processed and received through time. These two temporal facets of perception, which we term processing time and stimulus time, are often conflated i

Frequency-dependent modulation of foveal contrast sensitivity by fine-scale exogenously triggered attention.

Exogenous attention is a rapid, involuntary mechanism that automatically reallocates processing resources toward salient stimuli. It enhances visual sensitivity in the vicinity of the salient stimulus, both in extrafoveal regions and within the high-acuity foveola. While the spatial frequencies (SFs) modulated by exogenous attention in extrafoveal vision are well characterized, it remains unknown how this mechanism operates within the foveola, which can resolve SFs up to 30 cycles per degree (CPD). Here, we examined which SFs were enhanced by fine-grained deployments of exogenous attention wit

Optimal colors can predict luminosity thresholds in natural scenes.

Luminosity thresholds define the luminance boundary at which a surface color shifts in appearance from being perceived as an illuminated surface to appearing self-luminous. Previous research suggests that the human visual system infers these thresholds based on internal references of physically realizable surface colors under a given illumination, referred to as the physical gamut. A surface is perceived as self-luminous when its luminance exceeds the upper limit of this empirically internalized gamut. However, the precise structure and boundaries of these gamuts remain uncertain. Optimal colo

Early electrophysiological responses reflect precision-weighted prediction errors to face features.

Facial expressions serve as a key source of information about an individual's emotional state, intentions, and the surrounding environment. Efficient error processing of facial features is therefore particularly important for successful social interaction. Nonetheless, while simple feature-selective error processing has been well documented, the literature on error processing in complex visual features, such as those of facial stimuli, that may not generate specific predictions at the fine-grained level of simple ones, presents mixed findings. The present study aimed to determine whether facia

Differences in visual stimulation between reading and walking and implications for myopia development.

Visual input plays an important role in the development of myopia (nearsightedness), a visual disorder that blurs vision at far distances. The risk of myopia progression increases with the time spent reading and decreases with outdoor activity for reasons that remain poorly understood. To investigate the stimulus parameters driving this disorder, we compared the visual input to the retina of humans performing two tasks associated with different risks of myopia progression, reading and walking. Human subjects performed the two tasks while wearing glasses with cameras and sensors that recorded v

Dissociated amplitude and phase effects of alpha oscillation in a nested structure of rhythm- and sequence-based temporal expectation.

The human brain can utilize various information to form temporal expectations and optimize perceptual performance. Here we show dissociated amplitude and phase effects of prestimulus alpha oscillation in a nested structure of rhythm- and sequence-based expectation. A visual stream of rhythmic stimuli was presented in a fixed sequence such that their temporal positions could be predicted by either the low-frequency rhythm, the sequence, or the combination. The behavioral modeling indicated that rhythmic and sequence information additively led to increased accumulation speed of sensory evidence

How Do Looming and Receding Emotional Faces Modulate Duration Perception?

The direction of visual motion has been shown to affect the perception of interval duration; objects moving towards an observer (i.e., looming) are perceived to last longer than objects moving away (i.e., receding), and this has been explained in terms of arousal- or attention-based modulation. To dissociate the two competing accounts, we investigated how the influence of motion direction on duration perception is modulated by the emotional content of stimuli. Participants were given the temporal bisection task with images of emotional faces (angry, happy, and neutral) presented in a static (E

Cortical oscillations can differentiate the gradient of the simulated central visual field defect.

PURPOSE: Covert spatial attention directs the attentional spotlight to a particular part of the visual field and modulates the retinotopic organized oscillatory brain activity. This study aimed to investigate the electrophysiological characteristics of oscillatory brain activity when simulating different defect degrees of the central visual field. METHODS: The power of theta and alpha activity was extracted using time-frequency analysis in forty healthy participants enrolled in the three-stimulus oddball paradigm. Standard stimuli were black-and-white checkerboards. Target stimuli simulated d

The role of the parasympathetic nervous system in visually induced motion sickness: systematic review and meta-analysis.

The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) has been implicated in the development of visually induced motion sickness. The objective of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effect of visually induced motion sickness on validated parameters of PNS tone. Methods followed PRISMA recommendations. Controlled trials reporting validated measures of PNS tone in visually induced motion sickness in healthy adults were included. One reviewer performed the screening of articles and data extraction, and two reviewers independently performed methodological evaluation. Data we
