Cochlear dead regions in typical hearing aid candidates: prevalence and implications for use of high-frequency speech cues.

OBJECTIVES: This study had two purposes. The first was to assess the prevalence of cochlear dead regions (DRs) among listeners with moderate to severe hearing loss that is typical of a large proportion of adult hearing aid wearers. The second was to determine whether subjects who tested positive for DRs differed from those without DRs in their ability to utilize high-frequency speech cues in a laboratory test. DESIGN: One hundred and seventy adults (307 ears) were tested for DRs at frequencies from 0.5 to 4 kHz using the threshold equalizing noise (HL) test. Speech recognition ability was mea

2f1-f2 distortion product otoacoustic emissions in White Leghorn chickens (Gallus domesticus): effects of frequency ratio and relative level.

The effects of primary tone frequency ratio (f2/f1 ratio) and relative level (L2/L1) on the amplitude of the cubic difference tone (CDT: 2f1-f2) distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were investigated in adult White Leghorn chickens (Gallus domesticus). In experiment 1, 9 f2/f1 ratios ranging from 1.05 to 1.8 were investigated. Measurements were obtained from both ears of 4 chickens at 7 f1 frequencies ranging from 0.8 to 4.0 kHz. The primary tones were equal in level, and varied from 20 to 80 dB SPL. The mean CDT amplitude increased with increasing primary tone level once the meas

Are Temporal and Tonal Musical Skills Related to Phonological Awareness and Literacy Skills? - Evidence From Two Cross-Sectional Studies With Children From Different Age Groups.

Temporal and spectral auditory processing abilities are required for efficient and unimpaired processing of speech and might thus be associa … onological awareness, reading comprehension, and spelling. In both studies, rhythm reproduction and pitch perception turned out to be significant predictors of phonological awareness in stepwise regression analyses. Although various associations between music processing and literacy were found for third-graders in Study 2, after phonological awareness was accounte …

Perceptual consequences of cochlear hearing loss and their implications for the design of hearing aids.

This paper provides an overview of changes in the perception of sound that result from cochlear damage. It starts with a brief introduction to the physiology of the cochlea, emphasizing the role of the "active mechanism" and describing how cochlear function is altered by cochlear damage. Then the effects of cochlear damage on various aspects of perception are described, including absolute sensitivity, frequency selectivity, loudness perception and intensity discrimination, temporal resolution, temporal integration, pitch perception and frequency discrimination, and sound localization and other…

Musical abilities in children with developmental cerebellar anomalies.

Developmental Cerebellar Anomalies (DCA) are rare diseases (e.g., Joubert syndrome) that affect various motor and non-motor functions during childhood. The present study examined whether music perception and production are affected in children with DCA. Sixteen children with DCA and 37 healthy matched control children were tested with the Montreal Battery for Evaluation of Musical Abilities (MBEMA) to assess musical perception. Musical production was assessed using two singing tasks: a pitch-matching task and a melodic reproduction task. Mixed model analyses showed that children with DCA were

Mutual eye gaze and vocal pitch in relation to social anxiety and depression: A virtual interaction task.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with high social interaction anxiety (SIA) and depression often behave submissively in social settings. Few studies have simultaneously examined the associations between objectively assessed submissive behaviors and SIA or depression, despite their high comorbidity and unknown mechanisms regarding submissiveness. METHODS: A sample of 45 young adults self-reported trait SIA and depression, state positive/negative affect (PA/NA) before and after a virtual social interaction. Participants engaged in a four-minute conversation with a confederate who was trained to behave n

Perceptual and Computational Estimates of Vocal Breathiness and Roughness in Sustained Phonation and Connected Speech.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical assessment of voice quality (VQ) often uses a combination of sustained phonations and more prolonged and more complex vocalizations. The purpose of this study was to compare the perceived vocal breathiness and vocal roughness of sustained phonations and connected speech over a wide range of dysphonia severity and to evaluate their relationship with acoustic measures and bioinspired models of breathiness and roughness. METHODS: VQ dimension-specific single-variable matching task (SVMT) was used to index the perceived breathiness or roughness of five male and five female tal

Vowel and Tone Identification for Mandarin Congenital Amusics: Effects of Vowel Type and Semantic Content.

Purpose This study aimed to explore the effects of Mandarin congenital amusia with or without lexical tone deficit (i.e., tone agnosia and p … n lexical tone and vowel perception. On the contrary, pure amusics's effect is primarily on musical pitch perception but not on lexical tone or phonemic deficit. Vowel type did not affect speech deficits for tone agnosics, while they relied more on semantic content as a compensation.

Vibrational Therapies for Vocal Fatigue.

BACKGROUND: Vibration is commonly used to relax tension in the limb and truck muscle. Vibration used directly on the muscle concerned and vertical vibration used on the whole-body through a foot platform have been reported in the literature to be useful to release muscle tension. AIM: The present study investigated the effect of indirect whole-body vibration (WBV) and direct localized perilaryngeal vibration (LPV) on the phonatory functions of nondysphonic individuals with vocal fatigue. METHODS: Forty-four subjects (mean age = 21.67 years) with normal voice, were randomly assigned to either

Detection and discrimination of simple and complex sounds by hearing-impaired Belgian Waterslager canaries.

Belgian Waterslager canaries (BWC) are bred to produce a distinctive low-pitched song with energy restricted to a lower range of frequencies than in other types of canaries. Previous studies have shown a high frequency hearing loss primarily above 2000 Hz that is related to hair cell abnormalities in BWC, but little is known about auditory perception in these birds. Here, frequency, duration, and intensity discrimination, temporal integration, gap detection, and discrimination of temporally reversed harmonic complexes in BWC were measured and compared to normal-hearing non-BWC. BWC had excelle

Visually-induced tilt during parabolic flights.

A helmet-mounted visual display system was used to study visually induced sensations of self-motion (vection) about the roll, pitch and yaw axes under normal gravity condition (1g) and during the microgravity and hypergravity phases of parabolic flights aboard the NASA KC-135 aircraft. Under each gravity condition, the following parameters were investigated: (1) the subject's perceived body vertical with eyes closed and with eyes open gazing at a stationary random dot display; (2) the magnitude of sensations of body tilt with respect to the subjective vertical, while the subject viewed display

The comparison of the comodulation masking release (CMR) in individuals with and without chronic tinnitus.

In comodulation masking release (CMR), the auditory signal threshold improves when maskers far from the frequency of the target signal are coherently amplitude-modulated. Studies show that inhibitory function may play a role in CMR. In individuals who have tinnitus, decreasing inhibitory functioning in auditory central nervous system has been documented. Therefore, in this study, the purpose was to evaluate CMR in individuals suffering from tinnitus and compare CMR findings with those who do not have tinnitus. Seventeen normal-hearing individuals (without tinnitus) and 13 individuals having un

Perception of tone and aspiration contrasts in Chinese children with dyslexia.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown a relationship between speech perception and dyslexia in alphabetic writing. In these studies speech perception was measured using phonemes, a prominent feature of alphabetic languages. Given the primary importance of lexical tone in Chinese language processing, we tested the extent to which lexical tone and aspiration, two fundamental dimensions of Cantonese speech not represented in writing, would distinguish dyslexic from non-dyslexic 8-year-old Chinese children. Tone and aspiration were tested in addition to other phonological processing skills acros

A simple model of cochlear micromechanics in the mammal and lizard.

A model is presented which is a simple representation of cochlear micromechanics in the lizard and mammal. The model is a linear, time-invariant mechanical system, consisting of two coupled mechanical filters. It is capable of a sharply tuned first and second filter, consistent with the sharply tuned basilar membrane and auditory nerve fibers in the mammal. When parameters are adjusted for the alligator lizard (Gerrhonotus multicarinatus), the model generates a sharply tuned second filter without a sharply tuned first filter. In the alligator lizard, the auditory nerve fibers are sharply tuned

Effect of speaker variability on tone perception for L2 learners: Perspectives of machine learning.

Mandarin tones 2 and 3 share similar acoustic characteristics, posing a challenge for L2 learners to distinguish. This difficulty is further compounded by both inter- and intra-speaker variability. This study employed machine learning methods to examine the effectiveness of eight acoustic cues for tone 2 and tone 3 classification in speech that were produced by 20 speakers under normal and loud speaking modes (experiment 1). Additionally, we compared the perception between native listeners and medium-to-advanced Thai L2 learners of Mandarin, including perceptual accuracy, cue-weighting strateg

Auditory temporal integration in the normal-hearing and hearing-impaired cat.

Temporal integration functions obtained from human subjects with sensorineural hearing loss have shallower slopes than the functions obtained from normal-hearing subjects. The present investigation was designed to explore this relation in animals in order to compare normal-hearing cats and humans. Auditory temporal integration functions were measured for five cats before and after they were exposed to a 2-kHz tone at 110 dB SPL for 48 h. To measure the temporal integration functions, ten stimuli were used that had overall durations from 8.32 to 275 ms and that were configured either as single

The effect of type of hearing loss on hearing aid use.

This study examined the effect of type of loss and reduced PB discrimination on hours of daily hearing aid wear. Patient data were entered in one of four matrices designed to permit examination of one variable while balancing the effects of other variables. When the influences of amount of hearing loss, age, hearing aid experience, and employment status were balanced, no evidence was found that type or shape of loss influenced the number of hours of daily hearing aid use. When the data for each type/shape of loss were pooled without regard to amount of loss, age, aid experience, and employment

Some current concepts of cochlear mechanics.

The development of the current concepts is reviewed in historical perspective. Helmholtz's hypothesis of basilar-membrane resonance was partially confirmed and partially defeated by Békésy's experiments on models and postmortem cochlear preparations. He discovered that sound was propagated in the cochlea in the form of traveling waves which reached a flat maximum at a frequency-dependent location. Mathematical theory explained this type of sound propagation as a special case of surface waves. Johnstone and his coworkers discovered that the maximum of cochlear vibration in living animals was mu

[Binaural summation of the ipsilateral and contralateral acoustic stapedius reflex (author's transl)].

The binaural summation of the simultaneous contra- and ipsilateral acoustic stapedius reflexes was examined in 20 normal-hearing patients. In these patients, the effect of summation was most pronounced with subthreshold intensities. A contralateral reflex was increased by ipsilateral intensities 8 db below threshold. A reflex could also be elicited by binaural intensities which were contra- and ipsilaterally 4 db below threshold. As a result of our studies, we recommend a revision of the definition of a positive Metz-recruitment. Because of possible binaural summation effects, the absolute val

Delayed detection of tonal targets in background noise in dyslexia.

Individuals with developmental dyslexia are often impaired in their ability to process certain linguistic and even basic non-linguistic auditory signals. Recent investigations report conflicting findings regarding impaired low-level binaural detection mechanisms associated with dyslexia. Binaural impairment has been hypothesized to stem from a general low-level processing disorder for temporally fine sensory stimuli. Here we use a new behavioral paradigm to address this issue. We compared the response times of dyslexic listeners and their matched controls in a tone-in-noise detection task. The
