From complexity to clarity: GPT-4 for patient-centered prostate cancer pathology reports.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether GPT-4-turbo can generate accurate, patient-centered prostate cancer pathology reports at or below a 6th-grade reading level using a validated reporting template. METHODS: We retrieved 44 prostate cancer pathology reports from The Cancer Genome Atlas database. We used twenty reports to iteratively refine our prompt refinement and tested the final prompts on 24 unseen reports. GPT-4-turbo generated two patient-centered versions for each report, one below and one above the 6th-grade reading level. We assessed readability using the TextEvaluator tool, which measures

Comparing Large Language Models and Traditional Machine Translation Tools for Translating Medical Consultation Summaries: Quantitative Pilot Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Translation of medical consultation summaries is essential for equitable health care communication in culturally and linguistically diverse populations. While machine translation (MT) tools and large language models (LLMs) are widely accessible, their feasibility and safety for health care contexts remain underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study investigates the feasibility and limitations of using LLMs and traditional MT tools to translate medical consultation summaries from English into the most common languages other than English spoken in Australia-Arabic, Chinese (simplifie

Readability of Prostate Cancer Patient Education Materials: A Comprehensive Assessment Using Readability Metrics.

INTRODUCTION: Patient education materials (PEMs) play a vital role in ensuring that patients understand their medical conditions and treatment options. In prostate cancer, complex medical terminology can hamper comprehension and informed decision-making. This study evaluates the readability of prostate cancer PEMs to determine if they meet recommended standards for lay audiences. METHODS: A selection of standardized prostate cancer PEMs, including standard surgical consent forms and patient brochures from major German cancer organizations, was analyzed. Readability was assessed using establis

Safety and efficacy of privacy-preserving models to create Lay summaries of brain MRI reports.

Patient access to radiology reports has heightened the need for patient-friendly communication. Automated generation of patient-centered summaries using large language models (LLMs) is a promising solution. However, their use on real-life reports is limited by privacy concerns. Here, we evaluate the safety and effectiveness of on-premise, privacy-preserving LLMs for generating lay summaries of real French brain MRI reports for emergency presentations of headache. In this retrospective study, we sampled 105 brain MRI reports (January–December 2022) for radiologist evaluation and a subset of 30

Patient-friendly simplification and translation of neuroradiology impressions using artificial intelligence.

Healthcare systems in the United States are now mandated to provide patients with immediate access to medical results. Access to complex results prior to appropriate clinical follow-up may cause confusion and fear, especially in populations with limited health literacy and English language proficiency. In this study, we demonstrate a use case of large language models (LLMs) to simplify and translate complex medical information for patients. We collected a consecutive series of brain MRI (N = 200), head CT (N = 100), and spine MRI (N = 200) reports, prompting a GPT-4o model to simplify these re

Beyond readability: Advancing patient-centered evaluation of AI-generated clinical reports.

Large language models offer promising opportunities to simplify clinical documentation and improve the accessibility of medical information for patients. Commenting on the recent article by Fereydooni et al. (2026) on GPT-4-generated patient-centered prostate cancer pathology reports, this correspondence argues that readability, while necessary, is not sufficient to ensure genuinely patient-centered communication. Drawing on recent evidence on after-visit summaries, discharge summaries, medical reports, open notes, and patient-facing educational materials, we suggest that AI-generated clinical

Improving patient understanding of oncology imaging: radiologist and patient evaluation of summarised versus full-length AI-simplified reports from a tertiary cancer centre.

BACKGROUND: Oncology practice is increasingly aiming to be patient centric. Imaging is a decisive part of the management of cancer patients and with the introduction of Digital Health Records (DHR) patients have the possibility of accessing their imaging results independently, yet the optimal way of doing so is still not clear. The introduction of Large Language Models (LLM) offers the potential to turn radiology reports into a clearer, accessible and unambiguous format and to democratise patient’s access to their own medical records. METHODS: A multi-reader retrospective Service Evaluation (S

Embedding LLMs in the patient portal to summarize acute minor illness information: a three-arm experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Patient portals provide direct access to clinical encounter data; however, comprehension barriers, especially for patients with limited health literacy, frequently prevent meaningful use, even for common acute conditions. Large language models (LLMs) embedded in the portal interface may convert clinical documentation into accessible plain-language summaries, yet no experimental study has evaluated this approach for acute minor illness. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the impact of embedding two commercially available frontier LLMs (Claude Sonnet 4.5 [Anthropic] and GPT-5.1 Thinkin

Where does excessive beta in Parkinson's disease originate? Insights from a case of unilateral cortico-pallidal pathway dysfunction.

Plain language summaryDetecting the source of abnormal beta oscillations in Parkinson's Disease: evidence from a case of impaired connection between cerebral cortex and basal ganglia. In Parkinson's Disease, a key feature is an exaggerated, oscillatory activity in the brain called the "beta rhythm", which occurs in the circuit, particularly relevant for motor functions, connecting the cortex (the outer brain layer) and the basal ganglia (the deeper structures). Scientists have long debated whether the exact source of this pathological activity was located in the cortex or in the basal ganglia.

Using ChatGPT-4 for Lay Summarization in Prostate Cancer Research to Advance Patient-Centered Communication: Large-Scale Generative AI Performance Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The increasing volume and complexity of biomedical literature pose challenges for making scientific knowledge accessible to lay audiences. Lay summaries, now widely encouraged or required by journals, aim to bridge this gap by promoting health literacy, patient engagement, and public trust. However, many are written by scientists without formal training in plain-language communication, often resulting in limited clarity, readability, and consistency. Generative large language models such as ChatGPT-4 offer a scalable opportunity to support lay summary creation, though their effecti

Full recovery after severe bacterial encephalitis and brain abscess following deep brain stimulation surgery for Parkinson's disease.

Encephalitis and cerebral abscesses are rare, serious complications of deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery. We report on two patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) who developed a critical condition with focal neurological symptoms and decreased consciousness, after an initially uncomplicated subthalamic nucleus DBS implantation. Because of the clinical and radiological suspicion of encephalitis and brain abscess, DBS was explanted and the abscess drained. After prolonged antibiotic treatment they gradually fully recovered, with persistently improved PD symptoms in patient 1. Concluding, pati
