Chinese skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis) is a perennial herb in the Lamiaceae, and is grown in Jilin and 10 other provinces in China. Skullcap root extracts are used for treating allergies and respiratory conditions (5), and have inhibitory effects on some plant pathogens (2). In 2012, stem blight on 3-year-old Chinese skullcap plants were observed from mid-June to late-September in a herb garden at Jilin Agricultural University, Jilin Province, China. More than 90% of the 15 ha of skullcap plants were infected, and almost 60% of the infected plants died. A similar situation occurred in othe

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGY RELEVANCE: Many people are infected by venereal diseases and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in rural areas. Sexual transmitted diseases are considered a disgrace in the community because of the stigmas attached to them. Indigenous people tend to use several medicinal plants to treat these infectious diseases rather than western medicines.
AIM OF THE STUDY: This study was aimed to evaluate the antibacterial, antifungal, antigonococcal, HIV-type 1 reverse transcriptase (RT) and to determine phenolic content of twelve medicinal plants used by the Venda people to treat v

The fate of salmonellae applied to tomato plants was investigated. Five Salmonella serotypes were used to inoculate tomato plants before and after fruits set, either by injecting stems with inoculum or brushing flowers with it. Ripe tomato fruits were subjected to microbiological analysis. Peptone wash water, homogenates of stem scar tissues, and homogenates of fruit pulp were serially diluted and plated on bismuth sulfite agar before and after enrichment. Presumptive Salmonella colonies were confirmed by serological tests, PCR assay using HILA2 primers, and enterobacterial repetitive intergen

The release of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) into the environment is primarily linked to petroleum industry activities, including drilling, exploration, storage, and related processes. The spillage of PHCs into the environment poses significant threats to ecosystems and can lead to serious risks to human health, the environment, and plants. This research aims to investigate the phytotoxic effect of petroleum sludge on the germination and growth characteristics of Salicornia sinus-persica. This study was conducted in a greenhouse using pots to examine the effects of varying concentrations of PH

Lead (Pb) is a toxic heavy metal that severely impairs plant growth and crop quality. Melatonin, a widely present indoleamine compound, enhances plant stress tolerance, yet its role in tea plant resistance to lead stress remains unclear. This study examined two tea genotypes with distinct anthocyanin levels, Longjing43 (LJ43) and Zijuan (ZJ), comparing their phenotype, antioxidant capacity, secondary metabolite synthesis, and lead transport gene expression under lead stress. Excessive Pb exposure caused severe oxidative stress, reducing PSII efficiency, increasing ROS accumulation, and intensi

Water pollution is an inextricable problem that stems from natural and human-related factors. Unfortunately, with rapid industrialization, the problem has escalated to alarming levels. The pollutants that contribute to water pollution include heavy metals (HMs), chemicals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and other industrial byproducts. Numerous methods are used for treating HMs in wastewater, like ion exchange, membrane filtration, chemical precipitation, adsorption, and electrochemical treatment. But the remediation through the plant, i.e., phytoremediation is the most sustainable approach to r

Justicia gendarussa, a medicinal plant collected in Vietnam, was identified as a potent anti-HIV-1 active lead from the evaluation of over 4500 plant extracts. Bioassay-guided separation of the extracts of the stems and roots of this plant led to the isolation of an anti-HIV arylnaphthalene lignan (ANL) glycoside, patentiflorin A (1). Evaluation of the compound against both the M- and T-tropic HIV-1 isolates showed it to possess a significantly higher inhibition effect than the clinically used anti-HIV drug AZT. Patentiflorin A and two congeners were synthesized, de novo, as an efficient strat

A salicylic acid-inducible WRKY gene, PtrWRKY73, from Populus trichocarpa , was isolated and characterized. Overexpression of PtrWRKY73 in Arabidopsis thaliana increased resistance to biotrophic pathogens but reduced resistance against necrotrophic pathogens. WRKY transcription factors are commonly involved in plant defense responses. However, limited information is available about the roles of the WRKY genes in poplar defense. In this study, we isolated a salicylic acid (SA)-inducible WRKY gene, PtrWRKY73, from Populus trichocarpa, belonging to group I family and containing two WRKY domains,

From May to July 2010, severe outbreaks of bacterial canker of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) were observed in 16 fields in the Province of Viterbo, central Italy. Cultivars affected were Uno Rosso, Peto 1296, UG 812, UG 822, and Podium. Disease incidence ranged from 70 to 100% and was highest for Uno Rosso followed by UG 812, UG 822, Peto 1296, and Podium. Leaf symptoms initially appeared as interveinal, pale green, water-soaked areas that quickly turned yellow-brown to necrotic, resembling sunburn. Infected parts of the plants began to wilt and then die. Light yellow-to-brown streaks or ca

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), the causative agent of tuberculosis (TB), remains a major global health challenge, exacerbated by the rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains. Limitations in current antibiotic therapies have intensified interest in alternative antimicrobials, including plant-derived phytochemicals. Essential oils (EOs), with their complex chemical composition and long-standing traditional use, represent promising candidates for novel anti-TB agents. This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the in vitro antim

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a key herbal product traditionally used as a root-based rejuvenative. Leaf and whole-plant preparations have also become increasingly available, for which dedicated safety characterization remains limited. European risk assessments and the Danish ban have raised safety concerns for "ashwagandha" without consistently distinguishing plant parts. We conducted a structured narrative review with a regulatory focus, integrating traditional sources, phytochemical and pharmacologic studies, human clinical trials, pharmacovigilance data, quality/adulteration investig

Stem rust, caused by the fungus Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt), is a harmful disease affecting grain crops. The traditional way to combat this and other infectious plant diseases is to use chemical pesticides. Biopesticides, as well as plant disease resistance inducers - in particular those based on chitosan, a derivative of chitin - are increasingly being considered as an effective and safe alternative. Recently, a globular form of chitosan, Novochizol, has been developed, which has a number of advantages and has shown its effectiveness in preliminary field and laboratory experiments.

Plant-herbivore interactions are typically antagonistic, but abiotic stress and compressed life cycles can alter both their intensity and net outcome. Herbivory is generally expected to reduce plant fitness, yet how desert ephemerals respond to low-intensity stem boring remains poorly resolved. We characterised the natural association between the desert ephemeral Strigosella scorpioides and its specialist stem-boring weevil Lixus ochraceus in the Gurbantunggut Desert, northwestern China, combining phenotypic monitoring, tissue nutrient and secondary-metabolite analyses, volatile profiling, beh

Pistachio (Pistacia vera) cultivation is a relatively new industry in South Africa with tremendous economic potential. However, disease problems could develop in time. The pathogens of pistachio found in other parts of the world plausibly will spread to South Africa and new pathogens never recorded on this host may develop here. In the summer of 1998, 2-year-old rootstocks of P. atlantica and P. integerrima displaying basal cankers and discolored phloem and xylem were observed in the Prieska district of the Northern Cape province. The objective of this study was to identify the causal agent(s)

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Phytolith analysis is widely applied in palaeoecological and archaeological research, but its interpretive strength depends on the availability of robust modern reference collections. This study expands the modern Australian phytolith reference collection by analysing 42 native plant species representing 24 families and 37 genera with emphasis on silicification patterns across major growth forms, including forbs, shrubs, trees, and C3 grasses.
METHODS: Phytoliths were extracted from available plant parts, including leaves, stems, flowers, seeds, seed pods, cones, and root

The nutritional composition and polyphenolic profile were determined in leaf and flowering shoots of burnet species (Sanguisorba officinalis, S. officinalis 'Tanna', and S. menziesii), with plant material further separated into leaves and stems. The results demonstrated that these herbs are valuable sources of dietary fiber, as well as being rich in protein and essential minerals. Depending on the morphological part, dietary fiber content ranged from 37.8 to 67.7 g/100 g, protein content from 5.3 to 19.5 g/100 g, and ash content from 3.8 to 9.9 g/100 g. Moreover, Sanguisorba species are partic

Tinospora crispa is a popular traditional herbal plant commonly used throughout the world for treatment of various diseases, in particular type 2 diabetes mellitus. We report here a new case of toxic hepatitis in a 57-year old male patient in the French West Indies following the consumption of two aqueous extracts of fresh Tinospora crispa stems. It thus differs from two previously reported cases that concerned the chronic intake of powdered dry stems delivered in solid oral dosage forms (i.e. pellets and tablets).
