The crosstalk of autophagy and metabolism in plants.

Autophagy in plants promotes cellular longevity and nutrient recycling by degrading unwanted organelles and damaged cytoplasmic components. This process is essential for plant stress tolerance and nutrient management. In all plant organs, autophagy plays a critical role in maintaining cellular homeostasis, and defects in autophagy lead to severe metabolic disorders. Conversely, metabolic signals regulate autophagic activity at multiple levels. Here, we review how autophagy contributes to nutrient management at different organizational levels and how metabolism modulates autophagy across plant …

Chromosome painting in plants: history and future perspectives.

Chromosome painting was developed in mammalian species nearly four decades ago and rapidly became a powerful tool for chromosome identification, comparative cytogenetics, and evolutionary genome analysis. Comparative chromosome painting among diverse mammals generated much of the foundational knowledge of chromosome structure, chromosomal rearrangements, and karyotype evolution before the advent of whole-genome sequencing. Although chromosome painting was first demonstrated in plants in 2001, its applications remained largely restricted to a few plant lineages until the development of oligonuc…

Design and engineering of photorespiratory bypasses in plants.

Photorespiration is an essential metabolic process in C3 plants, yet it imposes significant carbon losses of up to 30% or more. Synthetic biology has recently enabled the engineering of diverse photorespiratory bypasses to overcome this limitation. In this review, we categorize these bypasses into three major types based on glycolate carbon retention and CO2 release. The first are chloroplast-localized carbon-releasing bypasses, which shift CO2 release from mitochondria to chloroplasts, thereby establishing a localized CO2-concentrating mechanism around Rubisco. The second are carbon-neutral b…

Non-invasive imaging of defence responses in plants.

Jasmonic and salicylic acids are key hormones involved in plant responses to pests and pathogens. Existing fluorescence-based approaches to imaging plant defence hormones are constrained by the need for external illumination and by autofluorescence of plant tissues, while luminescence-based ones require exogenous substrates. Here, we use jasmonate- and salicylate-responsive promoters to engineer autoluminescent plants that report hormone signalling activity with up to a 53-fold contrast. Using consumer-grade cameras, we image reporter Arabidopsis thaliana and Nicotiana benthamiana plants throu…

Nanoparticles - polyphenol and flavonoid plants for diabetic wounds.

Diabetic wounds, particularly diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), represent a major clinical challenge due to impaired healing processes driven by oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, infection, and insufficient angiogenesis. Conventional therapies remain limited in addressing these multifactorial mechanisms, highlighting the need for more effective therapeutic strategies. Polyphenols and flavonoids have gained attention as natural bioactive compounds with potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and pro-angiogenic properties. However, their clinical application is hindered by poor bi

Phytoremediation of arsenic contaminated soil using cassava plants.

Arsenic (As) contamination in the environment is a significant global health concern. This study evaluates the potential of cassava (Manihot esculenta) as a remediation tool for As-contaminated soils. Five cassava cultivars were cultivated in soils with varying As concentrations, and morphological traits and As accumulation were assessed at four and six months after planting (MAP). The results indicate that high As concentrations (50 mg kg-1) led to a 50% reduction in shoot dry weight, while moderate As levels (25 mg kg-1) resulted in a 41% decrease. At 4 MAP, the R11 cultivar exhibited the hi

Swift microbiome-mediated phenotype transfer from transgenic plants.

The expression of an organism's genes determines its own characteristics in any given environment. In this study, we demonstrate that the phenotypic traits of genetically modified transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana plants, designed for nutrient efficiency and enhanced yield, can be naturally and readily transferred to neighboring wild-type plants. Our findings reveal that the transgenic plants significantly influence the populational, compositional, and functional traits of their root-associated microbiome (RAM), resulting in a larger population, with distinct composition and high functional pote…

Assessment of airborne pollutants in wastewater treatment plants.

Wastewater generation rates have increased considerably in recent years due to population growth, urbanisation, and industrialisation. Although wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play a crucial role in purifying wastewater and mitigating industrial and domestic pollution in global freshwater reserves, their impact on air quality in nearby areas is frequently neglected. Therefore, this study assessed air quality in two WWTPs in Toledo, Spain. One is located in an industrial area and processes both industrial and domestic sewage (WWTP1), and the other is situated in a rural area and treats dome…

Widespread horizontal gene transfer between plants and bacteria.

Plants host a large array of commensal bacteria that interact with the host. The growth of both bacteria and plants is often dependent on nutrients derived from the cognate partners, and the bacteria fine-tune host immunity against pathogens. This ancient interaction is common in all studied land plants and is critical for proper plant health and development. We hypothesized that the spatial vicinity and the long-term relationships between plants and their microbiota may promote cross-kingdom horizontal gene transfer (HGT), a phenomenon that is relatively rare in nature. To test this hypothesi…

Chitosan microparticles mitigate nitrogen deficiency in tomato plants.

Nitrogen (N) deficiency is one of the most prevalent nutrient deficiencies in plants, and has a significant impact on crop yields. In this work we aimed to develop and evaluate innovative strategies to mitigate N deficiency. We studied the effect of supplementing tomato plants grown under suboptimal N nutrition with chitosan microparticles (CS-MPs) during short- and long-term periods. We observed that the supplementation with CS-MPs prevented the reduction of aerial biomass and the elongation of lateral roots (LR) triggered by N deficiency in tomato plantlets. In addition, levels of nitrates, …

Apomixis and the paradox of sex in plants.

BACKGROUND: The predominance of sex in eukaryotes, despite the high costs of meiosis and mating, remains an evolutionary enigma. Many theories have been proposed, none of them being conclusive on its own, and they are, in part, not well applicable to land plants. Sexual reproduction is obligate in embryophytes for the great majority of species. SCOPE: This review compares the main forms of sexual and asexual reproduction in ferns and angiosperms, based on the generation cycling of sporophyte and gametophyte (leaving vegetative propagation aside). The benefits of sexual reproduction for mainte…

Interaction between Boron and Other Elements in Plants.

Boron (B) is an essential mineral nutrient for growth of plants, and B deficiency is now a worldwide problem that limits production of B deficiency-sensitive crops, such as rape and cotton. Agronomic practice has told that balanced B and other mineral nutrient fertilizer applications is helpful to promote crop yield. In recent years, much research has reported that applying B can also reduce the accumulation of toxic elements such as cadmium and aluminum in plants and alleviate their toxicity symptoms. Therefore, the relation between B and other elements has become an interesting issue for pla…

Strigolactones affect phosphorus acquisition strategies in tomato plants.

Strigolactones (SLs) are plant hormones that modulate morphological, physiological and biochemical changes as part of the acclimation strategies to phosphorus (P) deficiency, but an in-depth description of their effects on tomato P-acquisition strategies under P shortage is missing. Therefore, in this study, we investigate how SLs impact on root exudation and P uptake, in qualitative and quantitative terms over time, in wild-type and SL-depleted tomato plants grown with or without P. Under P shortage, SL-depleted plants were unable to efficiently activate most mechanisms associated with the P …
