Photothermal catalysis of waste plastics into propionic acid and hydrogen via Ni single-atom site isolation effect.

Currently, catalytic recycling of polyethylene (PE) into high-value chemicals using solar energy often faces poor product selectivity and low efficiency. This is mainly due to the difficulty in effectively controlling the intermediates during PE photoreforming and the long-standing challenge of inefficient charge dynamics. Here, we present a solar-driven photothermal catalytic approach for the selective conversion of PE waste into propionic acid and hydrogen under ambient conditions. Atomically dispersed Ni sites supported on CeO2 (NiSA/CeO2) achieve a propionic acid yield of 331 μmol h-1 with

Dissolved organic matter derived from long-term photodegradation of plastics alters microbial methane conversion in mangrove sediments.

Highly enriched plastic debris leads to an increase in dissolved organic matter derived from the degradation of plastics (PDOM), which potentially influences the stability of methane (CH4) emissions of microorganisms in mangrove sediments. Here, microcosm incubation was conducted to reveal the impacts of two PDOM on CH4 emissions from mangrove sediments. CH4 emissions from PDOM treated sediments were reduced by 0.03-0.11 ppm within 30 days. The reduction in CH4 emissions was attributed mainly to alterations in sediment properties and bacterial communities. Phosphorus-containing lignin and prot…

From insects to mammals! Tissue accumulation and transgenerational transfer of micro/nano-plastics through the food chain.

Despite extensive global attention on microplastic pollution, our understanding of the pathways underlying microplastic translocation, accumulation, and their potential impacts on ecosystems and human health through the food chain remains incomplete. To investigate the translocation and accumulation of microplastics from insects to mammals, we developed a novel oral exposure model that Tenebrio molitor larvae (yellow mealworms, invertebrate terrestrial insects) were firstly orally exposed to both micro and nanometer-sized plastics (M/NPs), and subsequently fed as a food source to mice (mammals…

Research progress on degradation of biodegradable micro-nano plastics and its toxic effect mechanism on soil ecosystem.

Biodegradable plastics (BPs) are known to decompose into micro-nano plastics (BMNPs) more readily than conventional plastics (CPs). Given the environmental risks posed by BMNPs in soil ecosystems, their impact has garnered increasing attention. However, research focusing on the toxic effects of BMNPs on soils remains relatively limited. The degradation process and duration of BMNPs in soil are influenced by numerous factors, which directly impact the toxic effects of BMNPs. This highlights the urgent need for further research. In this context, this review delineates the classification of BPs, …

Photoelectrochemical Enzyme Biosensor for Malate Using Quantum Dots on Indium Tin Oxide/Plastics as a Sensing Surface.

A photoelectrochemical biosensor for malate was developed using an indium tin oxide (ITO) layer deposited on a poly(ethylene terephthalate) plastic sheet as a transparent electrode material for the immobilization of malate dehydrogenase together with CdTe quantum dots. Different approaches were compared for the construction of the bioactive layer; the highest response was achieved by depositing malate dehydrogenase together with CdTe nanoparticles and covering it with a Nafion/water (1:1) mixture. The amperometric signal of this biosensor was recorded during irradiation with a near-UV LED in t

Effect of Thermal Interface Materials on Heat Dissipation of Light-Emitting Diode Headlamps with Thermally-Conductive Plastics.

We study the effect of thermal interface material such as thermal-conductive plastic on the dissipation of generated heat from the light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based headlamp for the application of environment-friendly green energy in vehicles. The thermal distribution and the performances of thermal-conductive plastic with heatsink are consistently investigated by using experimental and numerical results. Various thicknesses of thermal-conductive plastics from 0.3 mm to 1.0 mm used in this research work. Basically the thermal-conductive plastic reduces the thermal interface resistance between…

Effect of ZnCl2-activated biochar on catalytic pyrolysis of mixed waste plastics for producing aromatic-enriched oil.

ZnCl2-activated biochar produced by one-step (impregnated by a 40% ZnCl2 solution, defined as Zn/C-I) and two-step (impregnated by a 40% ZnCl2 solution and microemulsion, defined as Zn/C-II and Zn/C-III, respectively) methods was used to catalyze the pyrolysis of mixed waste plastics (polyethylene, polyethylene, and polystyrene) to comparatively study their catalytic effect on aromatic-enriched oil production. The catalytic mechanism was discussed. The results show that ZnCl2-activated biochar showed high catalytic selectivity to aromatics during the pyrolysis of plastics at 500 °C, and the co…

Chemical and ecotoxicological characterization of solid residues produced during the co-pyrolysis of plastics and pine biomass.

A mixture of 70% (w/w) pine biomass and 30% (w/w) plastics (mixture of polypropylene, polyethylene, and polystyrene) was subjected to pyrolysis at 400 degrees C, for 15 min, with an initial pressure of 40 MPa. Part of the solid residue produced was subjected to extraction with dichloromethane (DCM). The extracted residue (residue A) and raw residue (residue B) were analyzed by weight loss combustion and submitted to the leaching test ISO/TS 21268-2 using two different leachants: DCM (0.2%, v/v) and calcium chloride (0.001 mol/L). The concentrations of the heavy metals Cd, Cr, Ni, Zn, Pb and Cu…

Solubility of I-653, sevoflurane, isoflurane, and halothane in plastics and rubber composing a conventional anesthetic circuit.

This study defines some characteristics of a standard anesthetic circuit that may impede anesthetic induction and recovery with I-653, sevoflurane, isoflurane, and halothane. Partition coefficients for anesthetic circuit components (masks, bellows, bags, airways, and circuit tubes) consistently ranked halothane greater than isoflurane greater than sevoflurane greater than I-653, suggesting a reverse order of washin and washout rates for an anesthetic circuit constructed from similar components. Consistent with this prediction, the concentrations of I-653 increased and decreased more rapidly th

Restoration of ancestral transcriptional plasticity contributes to plastic heterosis in fatty liver of hybrid ducks.

Phenotypic plasticity enables organisms to modify their phenotypes in response to environmental fluctuations. Interspecific hybrids can inherit parental phenotypic plasticity and even exhibit enhanced physiological performance under analogous environmental shifts, a phenomenon termed as plastic heterosis. However, the genetic mechanisms underlying plastic heterosis remain poorly understood. Here, we explore the transcriptional profiling of overfeeding-induced fatty liver in Peking ducks (Anas platyrhynchos), Muscovy ducks (Cairina moschata), and their reciprocal hybrids. We find that genes ass

Synaptic zinc plasticity shapes adaptive and maladaptive cortical plasticity following cochlear injury.

Cochlear damage triggers compensatory primary auditory cortex (A1) plasticity that amplifies responses to residual sensory inputs, thereby contributing to the restoration of both cortical responsiveness to sound and perceptual sound detection threshold. However, this adaptation can become maladaptive, producing neuronal hyperactivity that contributes to tinnitus and hyperacusis. The neuromodulatory mechanisms governing these adaptive and maladaptive changes remain unknown. Here, we demonstrate that noise-induced cochlear injury triggers bidirectional synaptic zinc signaling plasticity that pot

From cracks to informed circularity: Mechanics-guided decisions via high-throughput in situ failure analysis of recycled plastics.

Materials under real-world conditions are subjected to coupled mechanical and chemical stressors, yet current testing platforms cannot capture their combined effects on material behavior and failure, particularly when multiple specimens are required for robust measurements. This limitation is acute for recycled materials, whose performance cannot be inferred from a few conventional tests. Here, we introduce an in situ, high-throughput photoelasticity platform for multispecimen testing under controlled chemical conditions with full-field stress visualization. Using recycled polyethylene terepht

Micro-Nano Plastics and 6-PPD-Q in Cardio-Pulmonary Health: Environmental Sources, Systemic Exposure, and Mechanistic Insights.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) and the tire-derived transformation product 6-PPD-Quinone (6-PPD-Q) have emerged as pervasive environmental pollutants with critical implications for cardiopulmonary health and ecosystem integrity. This review identifies tire wear particles (TWPs) as a primary source of both airborne and waterborne MNPs, as well as 6-PPD, which readily oxidizes into the highly toxic 6-PPD-Q. These contaminants have been detected across diverse environmental compartments including air, soil, water, and remote ecosystems highlighting their global distribution and persistence. Human…

The hidden cost of green food packaging: Biodegradable plastics release more micro/nanoplastics and enhance PFAS co-exposure.

The global transition toward biodegradable food contact materials (FCMs) aims to mitigate plastic pollution, yet their safety under realistic food service conditions remains underexplored. This study systematically assessed the release of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) from biodegradable (PLA, PBS, PBAT) versus conventional (PP, PE) FCMs under simulated takeout scenarios. Results demonstrated that biodegradable FCMs released significantly higher particle loads-approximately 10-fold more MPs and 2-fold more NPs-than their conventional counterparts. This release was notably exacerbat…

Pilot-scale production and characterization of liquid fuel from mixed non-recyclable plastics for potential steam-generation applications.

Post-sorting non-recyclable plastic residues pose significant management challenges due to the limitations of mechanical recycling. This study demonstrates a novel, direct vacuum-assisted pilot-scale batch pyrolysis of mixed plastic rejects dominated by polypropylene (PP, ≥45 wt%), low-density polyethylene (LDPE, ≥45 wt%), polystyrene (PS, ≤5 wt%), and high-density polyethylene (HDPE, ≤5 wt%) in an insulated 1,000 L reactor without continuous inert-gas purging. Under optimized operating conditions (30 min air pre-evacuation at 15-20 kPa, 20 kg feed loading, LPG heat input at ∼25% maximum flow,

Solid phase micro extraction arrow optimization for the screening of volatiles compounds in recycled plastics in GC/MS.

The aim of this work is to develop and optimize a non-targeted screening (NTS) method based on Arrow SPME for the characterization of volatile and semi-volatile compounds in recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyolefins (POs). Both, solid materials and migration extracts obtained with food simulants (ethanol 10 %, ethanol 95 %, and acetic acid 3 %) were studied. The method development considered both headspace and direct immersion extraction modes to assess their relative performance and applicability depending on the sample type. To achieve robust optimization, a RSM based on CCD
