The racialization of pit bulls: What dogs can teach us about racial politics.

Many have argued that discrimination against pit bulls is rooted in the breed's association with Black owners and culture. We theoretically … breed-specific bans. We conclude with our findings' broader insights into the nature of U.S. racial politics. Michael Tesler, mtesler@uci.edu, corresponding author, is Professor of Political Science at UC Irvine; Mary McThomas, mary.mcthomas@uci.edu, is Associate Professor of Political Science at UC Irvine. An earlier version of this paper was presented at …

Homelessness, Politics, and Policy: Predicting Spatial Variation in COVID-19 Cases and Deaths.

When COVID-19 began to spread in the United States, the first public health orders were to hunker down at home. But for the vulnerable peopl … nity sentiment, and compliance with rules to promote the common welfare are greater. In fact, local politics and policies mattered. CoCs with more volunteering and a higher share of votes for the 2020 Democratic presidential candidate also had fewer COVID-19 cases and deaths. Yet, other policies did not matter. Having more homeless shelter beds, publicly a …

Arrhythmia Risk During the 2016 US Presidential Election: The Cost of Stressful Politics.

Background Anger and extreme stress can trigger potentially fatal cardiovascular events in susceptible people. Political elections, such as the 2016 US presidential election, are significant stressors. Whether they can trigger cardiac arrhythmias is unknown. Methods and Results In this retrospective case-crossover study, we linked cardiac device data, electronic health records, and historic voter registration records from 2436 patients with implanted cardiac devices. The incidence of arrhythmias during the election was compared with a control period with Poisson regression. We also tested for

Infectious disease, public health, and politics: United States response to Ebola and Zika.

Politics, rather than disease characteristics, complicated the United States response to Ebola virus disease and Zika virus. We analyze how media and political elites shaped public opinion of the two outbreaks. We conducted a retrospective analysis of media coverage, Congressional floor speech, and public opinion polls to explain elite cueing and public perceptions of Ebola and Zika. We find evidence of elite cueing by Congress and the media on public opinion. Public opinion of both disease outbreaks initially followed partisan patterns. However, while Ebola public opinion remained partisan, u…

'He's the dad isn't he?' Gender, race and the politics of prenatal screening.

BACKGROUND: Men's involvement in prenatal screening is becoming increasingly important. However, despite the potentially significant role of fathers in haemoglobinopathy screening, their participation is under researched. Furthermore, the portrayal of Black and minority ethnic (BME) fathers tends to be based on persisting stereotypes of men as either absentee parents with limited roles in screening or as controlling decision-makers. OBJECTIVE: To describe the influence of ethnicity and gender on the process of participation of men in antenatal screening for sickle cell and thalassaemia. DESI

The politics of 'The Natural Family' in Israel: state policy and kinship ideologies.

Israel is the only country in the world that provides nearly unlimited, universal state funding for fertility treatments. This exceptional policy has been widely understood as symbolising the state's pronatalism. In this paper I probe the policy and assess medical experts' practice to show how a specific modality of pronatalism--enhancing 'the natural family' concept--is being construed through legislation and practice. Policy analysis discloses how the relatively efficient and safe technology of donor insemination has been devalued as a last resort solution to male infertility, to be applied

Why can't a man be more like a woman? Sex, power, and politics.

Conflicts between male and female reproductive agendas continue to play out in contemporary issues of sex, power, and politics. Viewing gender through the lens of biologic evolutionary psychology reveals persistent controversies surrounding women's rights. The history of oral contraceptives compared with that of erectile dysfunction drugs is just one example of the disparity between female and male reproductive choices. Contraceptives, maternal mortality, abortion, and domestic violence are issues directly influenced by politics, religion, and gender biases. Ultimately, everything that can we …

Disciplining addictions: the bio-politics of methadone and heroin in the United States.

Biomedical understanding of methadone as a magic-bullet pharmacological block to the euphoric effects of heroin is inconsistent with epidemiological and clinical data. An ethnographic perspective on the ways street-based heroin addicts experience methadone reveals the quagmire of power relations that shape drug treatment in the United States. The phenomenon of the methadone clinic is an unhappy compromise between competing discourses: A criminalizing morality versus a medicalizing model of addiction-as-a-brain-disease. Treatment in this context becomes a hostile exercise in disciplining the un

Please reduce the gap! How psychological distance to politics fuels belief in conspiracy theories.

This research examines the impact of psychological distance to politics on the formation of conspiracy beliefs. Psychological distance to politics, defined as the perceived separation or detachment from political processes, can lead individuals to view political events and actors with suspicion. Through two cross-sectional studies, with nationally representative samples (Study 1: United States, N = 431; Study 2: United States, N = 300), we find that greater psychological distance to politics predicts belief in specific conspiracy theories and conspiracy mentality. In Study 3 (United States, N …

An inconvenient mandate: Margaret Thatcher, neoliberalism, and the politics of climate change, 1987-90.

Between 1987 and 1990, Margaret Thatcher became one of the most high-profile world leaders to warn publicly of anthropogenic climate change. This article argues that her apparent 'green turn' was not a moral conversion or a departure from Thatcherism, but a strategic adaptation of it. Drawing on declassified Prime Minister's Office files, Cabinet correspondence, and private papers, it shows that climate policy was shaped through a 'neoliberal filter' that favoured responses compatible with fiscal discipline, technological modernization, and market logics. As a result, ministers supported clima

Reframing the Overdose Crisis: Stigma, Industry Influence, and the Politics of Abuse-Deterrent Opioids.

Between 2013 and 2017, Canadian federal policymakers grappled with mandating abuse-deterrent formulations (ADFs) for oxycodone products as a response to the overdose crisis. Marketed as a safeguard against misuse and diversion, ADFs promised a technological fix to opioid-related harms, yet their population-level effectiveness remained contested. This study systematically analyzes federal parliamentary debates and committee hearings, identifying key arguments in framings to support or oppose ADF mandates. Proponents framed the crisis through the lens of individual misuse, positioning ADFs as ph

Heritable human genome editing and the politics of law: the South African case study.

Heritable human genome editing (HHGE) has emerged as one of the most contested frontiers of bioscience, where law is mobilized as a political instrument. This article uses South Africa as a case study in the politics of law in HHGE governance, showing how even a substantively strong regulatory framework can collapse when procedurally fragile and politically contested. The National Health Research Ethics Council's 2024 guidelines established a regulated pathway for HHGE research and anticipated the eventual possibility of clinical application. The guidelines were aligned with constitutional rig…
