Sex-biased seed predation in a gynodioecious species, Sidalcea campestris.

PREMISE: The coexistence of females and hermaphrodites, or gynodioecy, requires that females have a reproductive advantage over hermaphrodites in offspring quality and/or quantity. Female advantage can be mediated by a variety of ecological factors, including interactions with antagonists such as pre-dispersal seed predators. We compared differential rates of seed predation on hermaphrodites and females in Sidalcea campestris to assess the potential role of seed predators in gynodioecy maintenance. METHODS: We evaluated rates of seed predation in 28 populations of S. campestris, a gynodioecio

Distribution of infectious and parasitic agents among three sentinel bee species across European agricultural landscapes.

Infectious and parasitic agents (IPAs) and their associated diseases are major environmental stressors that jeopardize bee health, both alone and in interaction with other stressors. Their impact on pollinator communities can be assessed by studying multiple sentinel bee species. Here, we analysed the field exposure of three sentinel managed bee species (Apis mellifera, Bombus terrestris and Osmia bicornis) to 11 IPAs (six RNA viruses, two bacteria, three microsporidia). The sentinel bees were deployed at 128 sites in eight European countries adjacent to either oilseed rape fields or apple orc

The concentration and energetic content of floral nectar sugars: calculation, conversions, and common confusions.

The sugar concentration of floral nectar is a key metric for describing nectar composition and a major factor influencing pollinator visitation to flowers. Across pollination biology research there are multiple approaches in use for describing nectar sugar concentration. With these different approaches there are several potential sources of confusion which, if not accounted for, can lead to errors. Further potential for error arises if researchers wish to make comparisons between the energetic content of nectars containing different ratios of sucrose, fructose and glucose. Regardless of whethe…

Floral Scents of Deceptive Arum maculatum L. (Araceae) Shape a Taxonomically Diverse Visitor Community of Lesser Dung Flies (Sphaeroceridae) That Affects Its Reproductive Success.

Most angiosperms are pollinated by animals, with insects being the most abundant and diverse pollinators. However, our knowledge about the diversity of Diptera as floral visitors and pollinators, and about their attraction to flowers, is still limited. Fly-deceptive plant species, such as Arum maculatum, are ideal model systems to explore these interactions, as their floral scents often mimic (parts of) the ecological niches associated with the dipteran life cycle (e.g., mating, breeding). In this study, we investigated the species and sex identity of lesser dung flies (Sphaeroceridae), the se

Possible Synergistic Effects of Thymol and Nicotine Against Crithidia bombi Parasitism in Bumble Bees.

Floral nectar contains secondary compounds with antimicrobial properties that can affect not only plant-pollinator interactions, but also interactions between pollinators and their parasites. Although recent work has shown that consumption of plant secondary compounds can reduce pollinator parasite loads, little is known about the effects of dosage or compound combinations. We used the generalist pollinator Bombus impatiens and its obligate gut parasite Crithidia bombi to study the effects of nectar chemistry on host-parasite interactions. In two experiments we tested (1) whether the secondary

Life habits and evolutionary biology of new two-winged long-proboscid scorpionflies from mid-Cretaceous Myanmar amber.

Long-proboscid scorpionflies are enigmatic, mid-Mesozoic insects associated with gymnosperm pollination. One major lineage, Aneuretopsychina, consists of four families plus two haustellate clades, Diptera and Siphonaptera. One clade, Pseudopolycentropodidae, from mid-Cretaceous Myanmar amber, contains Parapolycentropus. Here, we newly establish Dualula, assigned to Dualulidae, constituting the fifth lineage. Parapolycentropus and Dualula lineages are small, two-winged, with unique siphonate mouthparts for imbibing pollination drops. A cibarial pump provides siphonal food inflow; in Dualula, th…

Sexual dimorphism and female advantage hypothesis in the gynomonoecious-gynodioecious Dianthus plumarius (Caryophyllaceae).

To explain the co-existence and maintenance of females along with hermaphrodite plants, the female advantage hypothesis has been proposed wh … rs, these showed higher seed set and produced more and heavier seeds than hermaphrodites under open pollination. No evidence of apomixis was found in females, but spontaneous autogamy may occur in hermaphrodites. Reproductive Biology of Rheum webbianum Royle, a Vulnerable Medicinal Herb From Alpines of North-Western Himalaya.

Information on reproductive biology and pollination ecology studies of threatened plants are essential to develop strategies for their sustainable utilization and effective conservation. As such, these studies were conducted on Rheum webbianum, a high-value "vulnerable" medicinal herb of the north-western Himalaya. This species presents a unique mode of reproductive behavior through the involvement of different floral events, including the movement of reproductive organs. The plants survive extremely cold conditions through underground perennating rhizomes that sprout into juvenile shoots with…

Seedless formation of a landrace 'Sanenashi' (Pyrus L.) collected from Northern Tohoku, Japan.

'Sanenashi' is a landrace of Pyrus ussuriensis var. aromatica (Iwateyamanashi) with seedless fruit originating from northern Tohoku, Japan. To determine the mechanism of seedless fruit formation, we compared the number of styles in the pistil, fruit, seed set and the pollen tube growth between 'Sanenashi' and the Japanese pear cultivar 'Kosui'. Morphological variations such as short or browning pistils were observed in 64.2% of 'Sanenashi' and 5.9% of 'Kosui'. The initial fruit set rate of 'Sanenashi' was 48.3% at 4 weeks after cross-pollination with pear, and there were no fruit sets with pea…

Larger habitat islands maintain more persistent mutualistic assemblages.

Habitat loss and fragmentation threaten biodiversity by reducing species richness and disrupting ecological interactions. But it is poorly understood how reduced habitat area and increased isolation impact community persistence, as measured by its capacity to maintain multispecies coexistence. We draw on an intensive, multi-year field study of mutualistic interactions in plant-frugivore and plant-pollinator networks across 41 islands in an insular fragmented landscape formed by dam construction in 1959. We show that the loss of island area after inundation is the primary driver that reduces th

Incomplete synchrony of inflorescence scent and temperature patterns in Arum maculatum L. (Araceae).

In many Araceae both scent and heat production are known to temporally vary throughout anthesis, and in several species strong scents are released for pollinator attraction when thermogenesis is also strong. However, it is not known whether the temporal patterns of both scent emission and temperature are strictly synchronous and, for example, reach their maxima at the same time. We studied Arum maculatum, a brood-site deceptive species attracting its moth fly pollinators with strong fetid scents, to study temporal patterns in scent emission and temperature during anthesis. Inflorescence scents

Floral Morphometry and Sexual System Determination in Pink Pepper (Schinus terebinthifolia - Anacardiaceae).

The increasing global importance of pink peppertree (Schinus terebinthifolia, Anacardiaceae) as a high-value commercial crop and its potential for expansion in production demand appropriate management due to uncertainties regarding its sexual system. This study focused on evaluating the morphology of sterile and fertile floral whorls, as well as analyzing the sexual system of pink pepper in two populations in northeastern Brazil. The results revealed no significant differences in the morphological characteristics of the flowers between the studied areas, suggesting that the species possesses n

Diverse organ-specific localisation of a chemical defence, cyanogenic glycosides, in flowers of eleven species of Proteaceae.

Floral chemical defence strategies remain under-investigated, despite the significance of flowers to plant fitness. We used cyanogenic glycosides (CNglycs)-constitutive secondary metabolites that deter herbivores by releasing hydrogen cyanide, but also play other metabolic roles-to ask whether more apparent floral tissues and those most important for fitness are more defended as predicted by optimal defence theories, and what fine-scale CNglyc localisation reveals about function(s)? Florets of eleven species from the Proteaceae family were dissected to quantitatively compare the distribution o

Expression profiling of the gibberellin 2-oxidase gene CsGA2ox2 (Cucumis sativus L.) reveals stage- and tissue-specific transcript accumulation during fruit development.

BACKGROUND: Gibberellins (GAs) regulate fruit set and expansion, and their endogenous levels are controlled in part through catabolic inactivation. GA2ox enzymes convert bioactive GAs into inactive forms, but the expression of GA2ox genes during cucumber fruit development has not been characterised in a tissue-resolved manner. METHODS: Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) '9930' fruit were sampled at 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after pollination. The inner fleshy tissue (pulp) and the outer fruit wall (pericarp) were separated, and CsGA2ox2 transcript abundance was quantified by quantitative real-time …

Viral Diversity in Mixed Tree Fruit Production Systems Determined through Bee-Mediated Pollen Collection.

Commercially cultivated Prunus species are commonly grown in adjacent or mixed orchards and can be infected with unique or commonly shared viruses. Apple (Malus domestica), another member of the Rosacea and distantly related to Prunus, can share the same growing regions and common pathogens. Pollen can be a major route for virus transmission, and analysis of the pollen virome in tree fruit orchards can provide insights into these virus pathogen complexes from mixed production sites. Commercial honey bee (Apis mellifera) pollination is essential for improved fruit sets and yields in tree fruit …

Biopesticide-induced behavioral and morphological alterations in the stingless bee Melipona quadrifasciata.

Because of their natural origin, biopesticides are assumed to be less harmful to beneficial insects, including bees, and therefore their use has been widely encouraged for crop protection. There is little evidence, however, to support this ingrained notion of biopesticide safety to pollinators. Because larval exposure is still largely unexplored in ecotoxicology and risk assessment on bees, an investigation was performed on the lethal and sublethal effects of a diet treated with 2 bioinsecticides, azadirachtin and spinosad, on the stingless bee, Melipona quadrifasciata, which is one of the mos

Digital Monitoring and Modeling of Honey Bee Foraging on Clover Flowers Under Heat Stress.

Plant-pollinator networks are increasingly threatened by rising global temperatures, yet monitoring these interactions at scale remains challenging. This study presents a digital monitoring framework that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to analyze honey bee ( Apis mellifera ) foraging on white clover ( Trifolium repens ) under normal and heat-stress conditions. The main objective was to establish a proof-of-concept for real-time, AI-driven pollinator monitoring rather than to draw definitive conclusions about the effects of heat stress on honey bee foraging beh
